       Translation Tools--Google Drive!

If you have a scan of an article in another language, but you
don't have a super-OCR program like the full version of Acrobat,
translation seems impossible. However, you can use Google Drive,
of all things, to help you translate the articles!
Google Drive automatically OCRs all images and PDFs that you
upload, so that it can index any text it finds! Yep, if you
upload a photo with the Disneyland sign in it, Google Drive
reads the "Disneyland" in the picture so that the photo will
appear if you search for "Disney" in your Google Drive.
To get to the text in any image or PDF, right-click the file in
Google Drive, click Open With, and then click Google Docs.
You can then copy the text from Google Docs and past it into
Google Translate. You'll usually need to massage some of the
text to correct OCR errors, and Drive may disconnect some text
if the layout in an article is complex (lots of captions, text
boxes, and pull quotes), but it's a heck of a lot easier than
       the alternatives!
When you know the topic, you can usually make sense of garbled
sentences. Be sure to right-click those problem sentences and
type a corrected translation. Google Translate learns from your
corrections and future translations will get better and better.
Sure, this isn't the fastest method ever, but it's much, much
faster than trying to flip through a dictionary as you go.
Of course, for books the Google Translate app on your smartphone
and the Camera mode is your best bet. The problem is that the
translation can bounce around due to camera shake, the pages
moving, and so forth. Bodge together a simple stand for your
phone and find a kitchen book holder or make something similar
with a clipboard and very large rubber bands or clips to hold
       everything steady.
In all cases, having another Google Translate window open to
type individual words is very valuable. With single words and
short phrases, Google Translate provides far more translation
alternatives along with definitions and more. That helps you
pick the exact best translation for that word that fits its
       context.
Enjoy, and remember that your translation corrections help
       everyone who uses Google Translate!
