Counter overlap is not the issue, because the Spanish Civil War
would require new counters of existing aircraft, but in
Nationalist and Republican colours. ADC overlap is more
important.
However, even with the mass of scenarios from Javier, there’s
not enough there to stand on its own. What’s bloating this is
cramming in lots of small wars rather than fewer big ones.
To be honest, I’ve been thinking of moving to five ADC sheets
for some weeks now. I hope, when I come to talk to GMT, that
they’ll okay it. If not, then I have a Plan B, outlined above.
However, having so many ADCs, plus in the case of Spain a whole
war’s-worth of groovy colour schemes, really stresses the
counter requirements.
Basically, I think we can do it, but I’m left pleading with
Gordon to not ask for new counters for his Malta mini-campaign.
With the five-sheets scheme, on paper, I only have a ‘slack’ of
three counters!

I get periodic e-mail, as well as posts on BGG, pleading for
Bomber Command heavies to be included in the game. I usually fob
this off, because I've been unable to find any suitable daylight
scenarios. However, looking at two possible fights, I notice
that Circus 33 included Stirlings in daytime, while the 18 Dec
41 daylight raid on Brest included Stirlings, Halifaxes and
Manchesters.
I've got a book on Fighter Command in 41 on order. When that
arrives I shall have to take a look and see if there's a
scenario there anywhere. However, if there is, I imagine it will
be at the expense of something else.

Just in case this goes somewhere, I'm going to work up ADCs for
the key heavies--Stirling, Halifax and Manchester--to accompany
the Lanc ADC. The Halifax will probably require two ADCs: one
for the Merlin-engined types and the other for the
Hercules-engined aircraft.

Okay, I managed to scrape up enough material today to throw
together two scenarios: one on Operation Sunrise and the other
on Operation Veracity. The former involves a large gaggle of
Wellingtons, escorted by Spit IIs at the limits of their range,
getting cut up by Bf 109F-2/E-7s. The latter involved a big
force of heavies, including Manchesters, Stirling Is and Halifax
Is, escorted by Spit Vbs, but going up against Bf 109F-4s.
If we were to go with these scenarios, what would we have to
drop to make space? Well, the likely candidate would be the
Nanking raid scenario. This means losing the following ADCs: the
D1A, E8N, P-26 and associated counters. Hmmm. . . I might well
be happy to lose those to get some of the Bomber Command
'planes.

So, this last week I have added three more candidate scenarios
to the Expansion 3 list. That brings the total scenarios to 31,
which is far more than we need.
More to the point, it busts the budgets for ADCs and counters.
Puts us way over. So I’ve been hitting the spreadsheet today,
and looked at culling 3 or 4 scenarios, to save something like
four ADCs and a congeries of counters.
Things look quite promising with this new configuration. Gone
are ADCs for the D1A, E8N, P-26 and A-17. In are ADCs for the
Hampden, Wellington, Manchester, Stirling, Halifax and He 112.
It frees up a bunch of counters, also, leaving me with a slack
of 11 to play with, which could be useful. For example, there
are no Soviet I-15 counters in the plan at the moment (all the
counters are Chinese or Spanish), so it might be useful to
include at least a couple.
I’m intend to have a conference with Gordon on this next week
when he visits on Thursday/Friday, to get his thoughts.

Petr Mojzis is already testing his own Czech counterfactual
scenarios, so by the time they get to you guys they should
already have had a bunch of testing.

After chatting with Gordon over the weekend, we both think the
addition of the Brest scenarios for the Bomber Command bombers
brings something really interesting to the table, not least lots
of Wellington squadrons. I’m really firming up my views on the
scenario list and the candidates for cuts.
I want to see Gordon’s mini-campaign, to get an idea of size,
but I’d really rather try and limit the total number of
scenarios to ~26 or 27 or so, just to keep the testing
manageable. If Eagles is a guide, we are going to be in the
region of 7.5 tests per scenario by the time we are done, or
around 165 logged tests, plus the campaign testing. I’m not sure
I want the Origins scenarios to be exceeding 200 tests in total,
or I’ll wear y’all out.

So, I’m still waiting on Gordon to deliver me the Malta
mini-campaign, but I’m starting to organise the remaining
scenarios, making cuts to get my first draft. This gives me nine
spare counters on the counter sheet at the moment.
So far I have 26 scenarios with three being hybrids also
requiring ownership of Blitz. I think that a reasonable ratio.
I think there’s still a toss-up on whether I want to include the
scenario with the He 112, or instead replace it with the BR.20.
You can’t have enough Italian bomber ADCs, and yet. . .

So, I now have a laid-out version of the third expansion,
complete with campaign and first draft of the player aid.
Pete’s countersheet roster has been super-useful. The Campaign
will need a few new counters, but not many. Basically, I only
have to add in the following:
1 x campaign turn marker
1 x MC.202 flight
1 x Ju 87 squadron (German colours)
4 x Ju 88 squadron (German colours)
The reason for the mass of Ju 88 counters is because they and
the Ju 87s have overlapping ID letters. (Note: I need to make
sure that the new counter IDs do not overlap with the SM-79s,
either.) These additions leave me a reserve of 2 unassigned
counters, which is not a lot, but better than nowt.
Here is the planned counter roster, as at present:

By the way, I'm going to have to stop calling Gordon's Malta
campaign a 'mini-campaign' as it's a bit more full-blooded than
that. It's not quite the same complexity or depth as Drive on
Kiev or Fortress Rabaul, but it's got a lot more than the
Pedestal mini-campaign in Blitz.
