Wing Leader: Origins (Expansion 3)
By: pilotofficerprune Date: September 13, 2018, 2:07 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Some months ago I had a conversation about the third Wing Leader
expansion with some of the core testers, that overspilled into
the main e-mail list. I put together some speculations as to
scenarios and content and then put it aside.
It was, however, a very useful exercise. Very loosely, the shape
of the third expansion is looking as follows:
(a) The third expansion will be titled Wing Leader: Origins, and
will be a pre-war and early war expansion, roughly 1936-42. It
will be an expansion for Wing Leader: Victories. It will NOT
require the ownership of any other expansions--only second
edition Victories. (More on the ramifications of this later.)
(b) I am leaning against creating a full campaign for the
expansion. The reasoning for this revolves around the testing
effort, the bang for buck, and the need to support the campaigns
with 0.5" marker counters, which reduces the number of squadron
counters available.
(c) Instead of a campaign I'd like to focus on a mini-campaign.
These would be a set of linked scenarios, like the Pedestal
campaign from Blitz. My subject for the mini-campaign would be
Malta. I'll be talking to Gordon about this soon, as I know he
had some ideas for just such a mini-campaign, though Brendan
Clark is mailing me some reference which will be invaluable in
helping Gordon (or doing it myself if Gordon lacks the
bandwidth).
(d) This means the focus of the third expansion will be
scenarios rather than a campaign. However, it's likely to be a
lot of scenarios--at or close to the number we have in the core
games (mid- to upper-20s).
(e) As with previous product, the scenarios will generate the
ADC content, so we will initially focus on scenario-building
before finalising the ADC and counter content.
(f) Outside the mini-campaign, scenario subjects are as follows:
[li]Spanish Civil War
China War (pre AVG)
Czech 1938 (counterfactual)
Khalkin Gol
Invasion of Poland
Invasion of the Netherlands
Dunkirk
Polish in the Battle of Britain
Dutch East Indes and Dutch in Singapore[/li]
There's scope to expand on this list if people have any cool
ideas.
(g) I want to add the ten v2.0 ADCs from Wing Leader: Blitz to
the expansion. This serves two purposes: (a) it updates those
ADCs to second edition standard, AND (b) it permits us to build
a standalone expansion that does not rely on owning Blitz. We
get a twofer. This allows us to use Blitz aircraft like the I-16
and SB for Spanish and Chinese scenarios, but without the need
for the first expansion set.
(h) So the next step is to build the scenarios. Fortunately, 80%
of that work is already done. I have already laid out ten
scenarios on the Poles, Chinese, Battle of Britain and Dunkirk.
I have submissions from fans on Czech 38, Dutch in Europe and
the Far East, Khalkin Gol and Spain that I now need to lay out.
I am now only waiting on scenario submissions on Spain (I'm
awaiting a second batch from my Spanish guy) and the
mini-campaign, plus anything else that you guys want to submit.
(i) Once we have all the scenarios, we can go through an
evaluation phase and decide what we'll develop, what we'll drop,
and how this all fits with the ADC and counter space.
(j) I don't intend exposing you guys to any of this material
until I have it all in, probably late this year.
(k) Though we should never say never, this third expansion will
likely be the last big expansion I'll produce for Wing Leader.
When this comes out we will have covered a huge chunk of war,
nearly all the important aircraft we can generate scenarios on,
and probably won't have a lot left to cover. If nothing else,
I'll need a break for a bit.

Forum, yay! ;D
And reg. the 3rd expansion - neat idea! I also support the shift
to minicampaigns - as you said they are easeir to test and in
this way players will have more "flavors" in one package.
Exp 1 and 2 provide a full campaign each, so Exp 3 can easily
satisfy the "quicker wrap-up" mood.

Though I already have a lot of content, I don't want to put off
any of you from creating new scenarios for the third expansion.
If you have a situation you'd love to see in the game, then now
is the time to create a scenario and submit it to me.
The subject list above is not the be-all and end-all of the
Origins content. However, I'd advise confining it to that 36-42
time period.

Just had a great chat with Petr Mojžiš on the development of his
Czech 38 counterfactuals, which I've modified slightly from his
originals. They are strong-looking scenarios and he will be
doing some work on testing them, so that they are in solid shape
when I eventually present them to you.
I'm now working on unravelling David Meyler's big scenarios on
the Noord-Holland bases and on the battle for Waalhaven
airfield, which I'm having to do more substantial surgery on.

I have some recommended changes to the Br 693. Please don't let
me forget to pull those together with detailed explanation.

By all means get these to me asap, so that I don't forget,
either.
FYI, I've just been prompted by one of the Dutch scenarios to
add the Blenheim Mk.IF to the Blenheim variants.

Gulp.
I just spoke to Javier, who is working on the Spanish scenarios,
to see how they were coming along. I was expecting a second
batch, which i thought would be a handful of scenarios.
He's told me he has made 21 scenarios.
Blimey!
Update: Just got 'em! I think there's some bankers in there.
I'll start picking scenarios out in the coming week.

I'm taking a day off tomorrow to dash up North to a funeral, but
today I reached a total of 19 scenarios laid out. I have three
more to lay out, from Petr, Peter and Robert, before I start
sifting through the mass of Spanish scenarios.
Once I'm done with those it looks like I'll have 30 or so
scenarios to pick from. We need to agree a more manageable
number to test.

One of those British terms where you have no way of knowing it
is a good or a bad thing :-)

Going through Javier's scenarios, it's clear there's a certain
number of scenarios that are either exercises in bombing (he
includes some anti-ship raids) or may be too small for a
published scenario.
However, there's some good 'uns here too. I'm going to lay out a
bunch and we can sift through and take the best. Though I
suspect ADC space may prove a factor. Nice though it might be to
include his scenario that features He 112s, or the one with the
He 70s, I can't be sure we have enough ADC slots for them.
