GMT have been very quiet in the new year. As you know, I posted
them before Xmas saying that Eagles and Victories were both
ready to print. I'm hoping they'll get back to me soon to talk
about production slots. However, this may depend on whether they
think there's enough pre-orders to warrant it. Pre-orders have
been increasing slower than I'd have liked over the last year,
and there's every chance they might hang fire until the numbers
have climbed some more.
In some ways i'm not worried, in that we've plenty to be
occupying ourselves with while that happens. On the other hand
it would be good to finally kick all of these things out of the
door and get them, particularly Victories 2e, into players'
hands.

By the way, does everyone who needs access to the playtest files
on dropbox have that access? I just want to check that no-one
has been missed.

I have just deprecated a bunch of the finished scenario playtest
reports to a new board, where we will archive them. I shall
complete this work next weekend, when I'll post up a bunch of
brand new threads for the Origins scenarios and campaign.

If people wondered why the V07 scenario suddenly popped up in
the playtest board, I'd better give a quick explanation.
For some time now Gordon and I have been talking about the
Victories second edition scenarios. They are mostly in good
shape, and before Eagles began some of you may recall we did a
round of test on a number of them to sharpen them up and make
sure they still worked with the 2e changes.
However, two scenarios have stuck with us as ones that remain
unsatisfactory: Malta Recce and Nemesis. Both represent the
state of scenario design in its earliest stages, when we were
exploring basic ideas such as 'how do recce missions work in
scenarios?' (An issue I think Javier has resolved recently in
one of his excellent Spanish scenarios.) Also 'how small can we
make a scenario?' They are, in their printed form, immature and
I'm not happy to ship them as-is.
Both scenarios needed a redesign, so I did a pass on Malta
Recce, and I think Gordon may yet do a pass on Nemesis, with a
view to getting something tighter and better gameplay, building
on some five years of experience with scenario design. While
waiting for me to get everything ready for Origins you are
welcome to grab the latest version of the Victories scenarios on
dropbox and give Malta Recce a go, with Gordon's recommended
changes in his playtest report.

I think Nemesis might benefit from revised victory conditions in
the style of Desperate Improvisation and Mediterranean Melee.

We have been slowly accreting new guys during the week,
following messages I blasted out on BGG and elsewhere. Hopefully
gives us a nice mass of testers to start work on Origins.
I'll probably blast out a recap of things for everyone, new and
old, on Sunday, when I have everything in place for the Origins
playtest launch.

Hi Lee
You've probably answered this elsewhere; if so, I apologize.
For those of us who would like to eventually develop scenarios
or campaigns, is there any way you could some of your most
valuable historical/technical sources with us? It would be
helpful for evaluation of scenarios and campaigns too. I
realize, as you've already discussed in your scenario design
notes, that we don't want to be woodenly historical but balanced
between playability and historical accuracy.
Thanks!

Phew! I basically have a growing library of stuff. A mixture of
all sorts of books, from heavy volumes like Shores and Cull on
the Mediterranean, to lighter stuff like Ospreys, and everything
in between. In some cases (such as the Battle of Britain) I have
multiple sources on a campaign, in other cases (such as China) I
might be working from a single book.
What's interesting about Origins is that most of the scenarios
are not mine but are by other hands. So you'll have to ask
Javier Hoyos about his Spanish scenario sources (though I
checked these against a number of my own books on Spain, he was
clearly working from Spanish language sources that are probably
better than mine). Similarly, I think David Meyler was working
from Dutch sources on the Holland and Java scenarios.
It all really depends on what you have to hand. And given that
I've moved away from slavish devotion to orders of battle, you
don't need many books to inspire a scenario.

It's also worth noting that my library has grown substantially
over the last five years. In the early days of Wing Leader
development I only had sources on a small number of theatres,
and I was reliant on other people to make up for my lack. I'm a
lot better now, but still I will order cheap second-hand books
off Amazon (and occasionally new) if it covers a campaign I have
little on. I think I've spent several hundred pounds just on
books for scenario design in the last half-decade.

Thanks for the insights, Lee. I know the investment has paid
off.
