I'll take another look through the set-up when i'm back at the
weekend.

I thought about it some more and I don't think moving an escort
will make a difference. In my playings I've had leftover escorts
that were never involved with the CAP, staying fresh for the
transports.

Elias, was this supposed to be a response to a comment on
Mediterranean Melee? (There are no transports in Meridian II.)

I've nudged the raiders a fraction rightwards, while spreading
out the defenders (primarily the Ki-44s) so that they don't
overwhelm the sweeps at the initial contact. This may change the
dynamic of the scenario somewhat.

Ok so the scenario states that the Corsairs have a split limit
of 2 flights . . . but there is only 1 flight in the countermix.
Same with the Hellcat . . . there is only 1 flight in the
countermix.

Scenario: E20 Operation Meridian II
Version: v0.4
Playtesters: Peter Wagner (Solo)
Report: The Japanese tried to come in low and fast to get at
Avengers without getting tallied by high flying sweeps. This
tactic was a bad one from the start as the British Corsair
escorts jumped all over them from a higher elevation while
Japanese tried to climb up to fighters. British were forced to
declare their wing formation to RTB so that they could move back
towards the action. This allowed them to tally late in scenario.
Japanese should have done worse but there was a squadron of
Ki-44s that managed to get at Avengers and last 4 cohesion rolls
and shooting down several Avengers and breaking one of them. The
British bombing was poor (average rolling but weather modifiers
were trouble).
Victory: Japanese Victory
British bombing 12 VPs + enemies shot down 14 VPs
Japanese enemies shot down 10 VPs
Total: +16 VPs, Japanese Victory (This feels appropriate since
the Avengers only managed to damage one of the refineries).
Recommendations: The British will need to score some really good
hits to give them a chance. They will likely need to dive to
below the clouds before starting their profile so as to avoid
those nasty weather modifiers. Perhaps Japanese need to just go
for elevation in this one.

Version 0.4
Player: Elias Nordling (solo)
This time the Japanese choose to ignore the Fireflies, that in
turn went for the observation balloons. That was probably good
for the Japanese. The escorts were somewhat swamped and the
bombers badly handled, 11 were lost to fighters, with 2
squadrons disrupted and 1 broken. The air combat was over just
as the bombers got within reach for the bombing. The Fireflies
managed to down one of the balloons, but for the cost of 3
fighters due to the heavy flak. Not worth it. It is probably
better to use them to negate some Japanese fighters.
Even in such a poor shape, the bombers should have been able to
do some damage, as there were a few veterans in there, but the
rolls were atrocious, and only two hits were scored.
Score:
British: 14 fighters, 1 bloon, 1 pt bombing: 16
Japanese: 8 ftrs, 14 bombers: 22
Score, -6, legendary British defeat.
With average bombing, the result would have been 12-18, perhaps,
still a British defeat, and it would have felt like a British
defeat.
Suggestions: The VP levels seems right for what the results feel
like, but I still have trouble with the narrative. The Japanese
are able to reach the bombers in fairly synchronized fashion and
the fight is over before the bombings begin. Also, the Fireflies
are probably better used as escorts, though attacking the heavy
flak might be a good idea, as they are decent strafers.
Attacking the balloons is definitely not worth it. I'm not
saying the historical outcome has to be a template, but it seems
like the Japanese have it a bit too easy.

Interesting. I tried to stretch out the arrival of the
interceptors. Do I need to stretch a bit more?
FYI: Mean VP output is 24.7 right now.
