E17 Kuban Meatgrinder

Brendan and I have attempted Kuban Meatgrinder three times now
and we feel like we have a good idea of how this will play out
as is. It does for the moment seem rather hard for the Germans
to win as we have only had a single German victory so far and
that was with some REALLY GOOD dice rolling.
Essentially the Germans all pounce on the Aux2 target and will
usually manage to get 14VPs out of it (CripplingDamage), but the
Soviets dominate the aerial combat and easily put up 10 or more
kills consistently.
We were both a bit bothered by the low incentive to target the
bunker/heavy flak since you have to fly farther and it takes
more hits to get point out of it. After all, the bombers
historically “pounded the beach defenders.” So to make it feel
more historical, we thought of the following special rule:
Bombing mission squadrons must target the
bunker.
Strafing mission flights must target the boats.
This would likely result in much less points for Germans so we
would then need to balance that by dropping the victory
conditions considerably. Say like the following:
+4 or less Soviet Victory
+5-7 Draw
+8 or more German Victory
Assuming Heavy Damage on both Aux 2 and Bunker, you get 5VPs
from bunker + 7VPs from Aux2 plus around 5 kills on Soviet = 16
VPs for Germans
Assuming Soviets get an average of 10 kills, this will be a net
+6 which is a draw.
If you like the idea, we can test it.

Played this one through and it seemed balanced enough. For the
Soviets, I felt like I had more aircraft than targets, but that
might be because of poor rsults from the German sweeps.
As usual, the HS129:s are VP farms, but here at least they are
in limited supply.
The soviets are unlikely to get more than 1 attack on the
frontmost dive bomber before it goes into dive bombing immunity,
but then again the germans need some measure of bombing success
to have a chance to win this scenario anyway.
I don't see the Germans ever bombing the bunker. They'd be happy
to sink the ships that are easier to score points for and want
to get things done before being swarmed by the Soviets. But if
the bunker was there, fair enough.
The scenario instructions has the sole Ju87G enter in trail,
which I guess is a leftover from an earlier version of the
scenario.
The Ju87G:s were wiped out before reaching the target. The
HS129s got there but were unable to hit anything despite three
passes. They were wiped out afterwards. Still, the Germans came
1 bomb hit from scoring full damage on the Aux.
Score:
Bombing 14 (1 hit from 21), 7 Sov ftrs: 21
Sov: 4 Me109, 2 Ju87D, 4 Ju87G, 4 HS129: 18
Final score 3, A Soviet victory, barely.
1 bombing hit more= 10: A german victory
That seemed fair and balanced. I'll give it another try.

I'd like to add that I missed the special rule that the Stukas
have to hit the bunker. That solves all my concerns about the
design of the scenario, but might affect the balance of my
outcome. The loss numbers probably weren't affected much.

So, I’m waiting on a test from Gordon and Andrew, but the main
change I’m looking at for the next release is to:
(a) Clarify that the Ju 87D-1 cannot attack ships, and
(b) Drop the VPs for Hs 129 losses from 2 to 1 for this
scenario, so as to reduce their value as a ‘VP farm’.

I have another playthrough of this one coming up, though I don't
have time to type it up now. A German win, much thanks to the
fact that the Henschels broke and ran on turn 1 :-)

Kuban 2:
Played by Elias solo
The P39s zipped past the German sweep undetected going for the
low level bombers. The Hs129s were lucky, in that they broke in
their first combat on turn 3 and chose to abort and exit the
map. Thanks to that, only one was lost.
The Ju87Ds were engaged, but the fighters rolled poorly on
cohesion on both sides, so losses were light. All Ju87Gs were
lost, mostly to flak, after causing one hit on a ship.
One stuka rolled 3 on bombing so the result on the bunker, could
very well have been 5 points more.
Final score:
Germans:
Bombing 10+1: 11
5 Soviet fighters
16
Soviet: 4Ju87G, 1 Hs129: 6
Total: 10
German victory. Seemed fair.
With one point per Hs129, you might not want to abort them
immediately. If nothing else, they are distracting the fighters
away from the dive bombers.

I'm not sure the lower group of bombers has any chance at
causing damage enough to compensate for the losses they will
take, even after reducing the Hs129 to one point each, but then
again, they serve to attract the attention of Soviet fighters,
so if they were immediately aborted, the Ju87Ds would probably
fare worse. I am not sure if this is a problem or not. Other
than that I see nothing that needs adjustment.

What could we do to buff the chances of the low group of German
attackers?

They could be squadrons. But the basic problem is their crappy
gear. The Ju87D is strafing with firepower 2, not very
impressive.
