Lee,
Scenario: S21 Gunships! - Test 03
Version: v2.0 (10th Jan. Edition)
Playtester: Jean Foisy [Solo]
Plans:
- The US plan was to use as many as possible P-38s to suppress
the Flak.
- The Japanese plan was to use was for the interceptors to force
their way to the Gunships
- The Flak will use Barrage.
Report:
- Game lasted 14 turns
- There was no vector height error for the duration
- Axis 2 x Veteran and 2 x Experten counters were assigned to
201 Kokutai and the last 2 Veterans were assigned to the
remaining Wing Leaders
- Allied Veteran were assigned the Gunships, 2 per attacking
force.
- 2 Allied Experten were given to the Right Escort and the last
one to the Left Escort.
- 2 Right edge escorts were switched to Sweep in Turn 1 Admin
Phase and ordered to Return to base on Turn 2 so they may strafe
the Hvy Flak units.
- The Left edge used the same scheme for Turns 2 and 3.
- The straffers tallied enemy squadrons after their straffing
runs.
- Both Hvy Flak were suppressed just before the Gunships started
their runs.
Victory:
ALLIED VPs:
Axis A/C shot down: 22 x A6M5a: 22 VPs
ALLIED bombing Results:
- 23 Hits on O-0 Airfield (Fatal Damage): 30 VPs
- 18 Hits on L-0 Airfield (Fatal Damage): 30 VPs
- 6 Hits on K-0 Hvy Flak (Heavy Damage): 3 VPs
- 5 Hits on P-0 Hvy Flak (Heavy Damage): 3 VPs
- 4 Hits on L-0 Lt Flak (Heavy Damage): 2 VPs
- 1 Hit on O-0 Lt Flak (Slight Damage): 1 VP
ALLIED TOTAL = 91 VPs
AXIS VPs:
Allied A/C shot down: 13 x P-38 (19.5 VPs) + 9 x B-25 (18 VPs) =
37.5 VPs
AXIS TOTAL = 37.5 VPs
SCENARIO TOTAL: +53.5 --> ALLIED victory [Perceived Victory
Level: ALLIED].
The bombing results on the Airfields and the big changes to the
Victory Levels made me pretty sure the US will prevail.
Recommendations: None.
Tuesday I'll start another test.

S 21
V 2.0
Solo
All American vets in B-25's.
Japanese veterans split between 204 and 253 Kokutai.
FLAK- effective (5 x B-25 and 1 P-38)
BOMBING- Hvy FLAK- 4 hits for 3 VP
Airfield- 20 hits for 30 VP
Airfield- 15 hits for 20 VP
Lt FLAK- 1 hit for 1 VP
Hvy FLAK- 8 hits for 6 VP
60 VP
LOSSES- 24 x Zero
24 VP
7 x B-25 (14 VP)
9 x P-38 (13.5 VP)
27.5 VP
VICTORY- 84-27.5= 56.5 for American victory, felt like American
victory.
American play was better, able to suppress a heavy
FLAK unit quickly which helped. P-38's fared better this time,
racking up 24 Zeros. American had enough points to forego 4
strafing runs to leave at that time and not risk any more losses
to flak. Seems balanced to me at this point.

So after two more plays let's check on VP calibration:
US Bombing: 43 + 68 + 43 + 25 + 69 + 60 = 51.3 VPs
Japanese losses: 2 + 18 + 16 + 18 + 22 + 24 = 16.6 VPs
US losses: 28.5 + 40.5 + 18.5 + 36 + 37.5 + 27.5 = 31.4 VPs
This gives us a mean output of +36.5 VPs (a delta of +9). the US
losses changed only slightly, but the bombing and Japanese loss
values shifted substantially.
Score outputs are:
Elias 1 = +16.5
Jean 1 = +44.5
Jean 2 = +40.5
Forrest 1 = +7
Jean 3 = +53.5
Forrest 2 = +56.5
I feel like we need at least one or two more plays before we can
put this to bed, as the averages shifted so much. But we are
close to knocking this on the head.

S21
v 2.0
solo
Game 3
Assets distributed the same as game 2.
Previously I had 204 Kokutai go after Americans on the right
side of the board. This time I had them vectored toward the left
side of the board.
FLAK- deadly, 9 x B-25 and 2 P-38
BOMBING- Heavy Flak, 4 hits for 3 VP
Light Flak, 4 hits for 2 VP
Airfield, 15 hits for 20 VP
Airfield, 4 hits for 5 VP
TOTAL- 30 VP
LOSSES- 11 x Zero
11 VP
9 x B-25 (all from FLAK)
6 x P-38
27 VP
VICTORY- 41-27 for +14 for Japanese victory, felt like Japanese
victory. Forces on the left side of the board could only manage
5 VP. Not being able to suppress the heavy FLAK in K0 really bit
the Americans in the backside. This one is going to be swingy
with the bombing and FLAK rolls. It looks pretty balanced to me,
maybe just adjust point schedule based on your data.

Lee,
Scenario: S21 Gunships! - Test 04
Version: v2.0 (10th Jan Edition)
Playtester: Jean Foisy [Solo]
Plans:
- The US plan: Escorts should tally interceptors ASAP.
- Non engaged Escorts will suppress the Flak units
- The Japanese plan: Go for the Gunships
- The Flak will use Barrage.
Report:
- Game lasted 15 turns
- Axis 2 x Veteran and 2 x Experten counters were assigned to
201 Kokutai and the last 2 Veterans were assigned to the
remaining Wing Leaders
- Allied Veteran were assigned the Gunships, 2 per attacking
force.
- 2 Allied Experten were given to the Right Escort and the last
one to the Left Escort.
- Early on the Escorts engaged the 253 Kokutai while 204 Kokutai
stay high. They drop towards the Gunships when the Escorts were
engaged.
- On the Left Edge the escorts engaged early, giving the B-25 an
easy path to the targets.
- Poor dicing gave poor bombing results.. Only L0 Airfield was
hit and crippled.
Victory:
ALLIED VPs:
Axis A/C shot down: 15 x A6M5a: 15 VPs
ALLIED bombing Results:
- 2 Hits on O-0 Airfield (Slight Damage): 1 VP
- 18 Hits on L-0 Airfield (Fatal Damage): 30 VPs
- 4 Hits on K-0 Hvy Flak (Heavy Damage): 3 VPs
- 1 Hit on P-0 Hvy Flak (Slight Damage): 1 VP
ALLIED TOTAL = 50 VPs
AXIS VPs:
Allied A/C shot down: 2 x P-38 (3 VPs) + 11 x B-25 (22 VPs) = 25
VPs
AXIS TOTAL = 37.5 VPs
SCENARIO TOTAL: +25 --> DRAW [Perceived Victory Level: AXIS].
The bombing results on the Airfields 31 VPs on a possible total
of 60 was the main reason for the Draw.
Recommendations: I don't know if something should be changed.
Honestly I'll keep it as it is.

Bless you, boys! I asked, you delivered, so let's see where that
takes us:
US Bombing: 43 + 68 + 43 + 25 + 69 + 60 + 30 + 35 = 46.6 VPs
Japanese losses: 2 + 18 + 16 + 18 + 22 + 24 + 11 + 15 = 15.8 VPs
US losses: 28.5 + 40.5 + 18.5 + 36 + 37.5 + 27.5 + 27 + 37.5 =
31.6 VPs
This gives us a mean output of +30.8 VPs (a delta of -5.7). I
think we're at the point to end further test on this, as we now
have enough.
On the current victory conditions, the score outputs are:
Elias 1 = +16.5 (Japanese victory)
Jean 1 = +44.5 (American victory)
Jean 2 = +40.5 (American victory)
Forrest 1 = +7 (Japanese victory)
Jean 3 = +53.5 (American victory)
Forrest 2 = +56.5 (American victory)
Forrest 3 = +14 (Japanese victory)
Jean 4 = +25 (Draw)
This gives is an American success rate of 4W 1D 3L. Let's call
this one put to bed and move on.
Jean and Forrest, could you please move onto S08 First Blood on
D-Day?
Pete W, could you please move onto S02 Piling On?

Andrew (IJN) & I have had a slow paced run through this (lost a
couple of planned sessions to RealLife so took longer than
anticipated) so we're a bit late to the party:
IJN went for the left hand strike group:
Left hand engagement
5 fighters 6 bombers vs 12 IJN fighters (2 losses to bombers)
END
USAAF 9 bomber 5 fighter losses (4 bombers to flak)
IJN 12 fighter losses
R AF 18 hits +30
L AF 4 hits +5
L Hvy flak 4 hits +3
R heavy flak 1 hit +1
USAAF +51
IJN +26.5
Final VP +24.5
Japanese win though possibly felt more like draw with
significant damage to airfields though high US losses. The R
hand escorts could have switched to sweep & strafed which might
have gained some more US Vp with the flak already partially
suppressed so the US could have harvested some more VP if I had
been playing better so this might slightly underestimate the
potential outcome with better US play. IJN will go for L sided
US group, seems no reason to engage R group air to air- though
it does leave the escorting Lightnings free to do some strafing.
With the benefit of hindsight if I was doing this one again I'd
do it differently but it works as is. Given more time I'd
suggest re engineering it a bit but as things stand happy to
contribute another data point (albeit a bit late to be useful) &
move on from this one
Cheers
Gordon
