Scenario: S02 Piling On
Version: v1.4
Player(s): Dave Demko (solo)
Narrative: The Allies put Veterans in both Kittyhawk squadrons
for resilience and tried sweeping high with the Hellcats and
Corsairs. The Kittyhawks tallied early and climbed for the
clouds, threatening to thread the needle between Japanese wings.
That didn't work, and the Japanese were able to tie up both New
Zealand squadrons in dogfights. The top Japanese wing did poorly
against the USN/USMC fighters, and the Japanese did not inflict
any losses until GT 5. Neither side saw a compelling reason to
split squadrons. All Allied squadrons were broken or disrupted
well before they approached the left edge. By the end, the
Allies were avoiding fights to preserve their VP lead. The
scenario setup makes things look difficult for the Allies, but
over time the hardware differences (Firepower, Protection) work
against the Japanese as you'd expect.
Results:
no bonus VP for intact squadron exits
Allies for Japanese fighters killed: 16 VP
Japan for Allied fighters killed: 6 VP
net 10: solid but not staggering Allied victory
The result feels appropriate.
Recommendations: Disallowing voluntary breaks seems like a good
idea. The game was tighter than the final score suggests, with
the Japanese forcing the Allies into some awkward situations.
This is an interesting all-fighters scenario. The Allies have to
make decisions about how aggressive to be, and climbing with the
US squadrons to disadvantage the high Zero wing has seems
optimal but involves trading away opportunities to support the
Kittyhawks. The Japanese have to figure out how to optimize
their swarm-and-harm tactics and not let any Allied squadrons
give them the slip. The 1 VP reward for exited sweep squadrons
seems like only a mild incentive. I think we're in balance &
validation territory with this one.

Here's a merely cosmetic but potentially cool idea: Do we have a
roundel in New Zealand colors to use on this one's Allied order
of battle?

Scenario: S02 Piling On
January 9, 2021
Version: 2.0
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
- Game lasted 9 turns (could have been called at Turn 6 as the
last 4 turns were entirely movement to see if the Zeroes could
catch VMF-223)
- There were no height errors at set-up or when using GCI
- GCI changed a vector 1 out of 2 attempts
- 1 F6F, 1 P-40N & 2 A6M5 squadrons split
- One Green Japanese marker was assigned to 253 & 204 Kokutais
respectively
- Plan was different this time. NZ Wing went in fighting after
mutually tallying 204 Kokutai. They managed to break 2 Japanese
squadrons before totally losing cohesion, the broken P-40Ns were
able to escape before 243 Kokutai could join the fray.
- At higher altitudes 201 Kokutai was able to tally and engage
VF-33, leading to the eventual breaking of 1 A6M5 sqn and both
F6F sqns
- However the F4Us were able to climb to altitude 13 then
out-run the remaining 6 Japanese sqns for the bonus points.
AirSols: x13 A6M5 downed: +13 vp; x2 Good Order Squadrons
exited: +2 vp = +15 vp
IJAAF: x1 F6F downed: -1 vp; x4 P-40N downed = -5 vp
Victory:
Total: +10
Recommendations:
- None. It’s balanced.
- Obviously 243 Kokutai needs to climb climb climb but even the.
i’m not sure they could stop the Americans.

Scenario: S02 Piling On
Version: v2.0
Player(s): Dave Demko (solo)
Narrative: The Allied plan was to make both Kittyhawk squadrons
veterans and try to inflict maximum losses, with the VP bonus
for exiting only a secondary objective. The Allies had the
better of the initial maneuvers and got ahead in the kill count.
but eventually the low and middle Zero wings were able to swarm
the Kittyhawks and a reinforcing Hellcat squadron. The F6Fs
broke early. The high Zero wing split a Veteran squadron and
performed well. Eventually the last unbroken F4U squadron
brought the fight to altitude 13. By then the remaining ace Zero
flight could force a draw by running away or risk a loss by
challenging the Corsairs, so they ran.
Results:
US VP for exiting 0
US VP for Japanese losses 11
Japanese VP for Allied losses 7
net 5 --> Draw; I would call it a Draw or a borderline Japanese
victory for turning back the sweep.
Recommendations: The Allied strategy was viable because it
emphasized their advantages in firepower and protection, but the
Japanese rolled better in air combat. As with any all-fighter
scenario, it's hard to reproduce a competitive game with
solitaire play. Still, I think we should check the overall test
results for a possible misbalance in favor of the Allies.

It's time to totalize this scenario and see where the averages
lie:
Allied Exit VP = 2 + 0 + 2 + 0 = mean 1.0 VPs
Japanese losses = 9 + 16 + 13 + 11 = mean 12.3 VPs
Allied losses = 5 + 6 + 5 + 7 = mean 5.7 VPs
This gives us an overall mean of +7.6 VPs, which is just above
our draw window and suggests an imbalance in favour of the
Alies. This suggests we must move our draw window up to +5 to
+8.
ScottK 1 = +6
Dave 1 = +10
ScottK 2 = +10
Dave 2 = +5
I think we need at least a couple more tests to give us data to
work from. The scenario looks finely balanced.

I think I need an opposed game to get a clearer idea of the
balance in this one. Anybody up for PBEM? Your choice of side.

Agree, the fighter scemsrios are harder to solitaire. I've just
been assigned this one so let's do it PBEM.

You're on, Elias. I'll send you a set-up file for whichever side
sets up first. If you'd rather play that side, send your own
setup.

v2.0
Player: Elias Nordling (solo)
As David said, this one is difficult to play solitaire. So much
is dependent on what the other player decides to try. We have a
game ongoing. This game, however, started with the Japanese
blowing their tallies and the P40:s making theirs, so they
jumped the Japanese. This went badly for the US, with 2 US
losses for no Japanese losses, and one US fighter broken and the
other disrupted.
With that, the Japanese had enough lead to put the burden of
attack on the Allies, and some jokeying for position took place.
It ended with all aircraft in a big dogfight, which was the
Japanese plan as it is hard to get an advantage in losses in a
big fight (a bit of an artifact of the system) after the US got
the jump on one fighter squadron causing 3 losses. One of the
Japanese fighters was at a lower altitude at the time so the US
felt this was as good as it was going to get. The dogfight ended
with a slight advant and two US fighter squadrons still left
after the last Japanese broke. One of the US squadrons were
undisrupted so it chose to exit while the other blew one last
attempt at pursuit combat, as the Japanese had managed to get
the fight close to their map edge.
Score:
US 1 exit, 7 fighters: 8
Japanese: 6 fighters
Total 2. Japanese win

Cool. Let's get another play in and then tot up the averages
again.
