       S04: You don't Know Jack
By: Elias Nordling Date: December 4, 2020, 1:59 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Given that this is another Fighter-Bomber scenario superficially
similar to First Blood at D-Day, I decided to try to pick this
one apart next. I sort of played it too, but in a very gamey
       way.
First, I considered if the Allies could just ignore the strafing
of the airfield and decided they could not. A +6 kill advantage
is hard to get, especially when you don't have positional
advantage, they need points from the ground.
Second, I thought the Flak looked on the heavy side, and
wondered if the Japanese could just rely on flak and the halved
VP for bombing to win, escaping with their aircraft. I played
this out and discovered two things: With the right approach, the
Allied fighters can avoid direct firing flak entirely, meaning
the flak is just barrages, and the Allies have a fair chance of
scrounging up the 6 points by putting heavy damage on the
airfield and one point on a flak unit, and a draw is almost
certain if they fail, so this is no path to victory for the
Japanese. Still, the flak rolls might be on the lucky side,
there are after all a barrage +2 in the target square, and I
would probably remove the light flak to even things out a bit.
But, since I couldn't find any way to break the scenario right
off, I'm going to play it straight next.

       v1.0
       Player: Elias Nordling (Solo)
No weird breaking tactics this time, just straight up trying to
win with each side. The US got a strafing pass on the airfield,
causing 4 hits and a loss, then the Japanese jumped them to
avoid further strafing. The US got the better in the air combat,
but not enough for a win.
Final score: US 5 bombing halved to 3, 5 fighters: 8
       Japan: 4 fighters: 4
       Score: 4, Draw
Comment: You could tinker with this and send it for another
round of testing, in which case I would probably take out the
light flak and up the draw window with one point. Or you could
just say it is close enough to fine as is, and concentrate our
efforts elsewhere. If possibly slightly tilted against the
Japanese, they still got one straggler from winning in this
test, so it doesn't look too unbalanced.

I'm inclined to leave as-is. I'm guessing we could tinker with
all our scenarios, but I'd rather focus limited resource on
       those that really need it.
       Thanks, Elias.

Agreed. I'll check the Kamikaze scenarios next as I remember
those were also somewhat timing dependent, though it might have
been there that it was settled that FBs could do 4 MP in a
       bombing run.
