S08 First Blood on D-Day
By: Elias Nordling Date: December 3, 2020, 2:42 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
v1.0
Player: Elias Nordling (Solo)
This was only the second Wing Leader scenario I playtested back
in 2016. I remember it required some tinkering with the setup to
get the timing right, and that this scenario sort of set the
changes and clarifications in FB behaviour in motion.
I played it again now, and the timing still wasn't quite right,
which is probably because back then it wasn't clear that FB:s on
a bombing run could get both the 3 MP for being fighters and the
diving bonus MP. Also it became harder to tally at longer
distances.
This means effectively that the Thunderbolts can bomb and move
one square beyond the target and end up outside of reach for the
Germans on turn 1. Turn 2 they can do a strafing pass. The
Typhoons can bomb turn 2 with a +4 mod with a bombing strength
of 11.
In this game, freak luck disrupted both thunderbolts from small
arms fire, and the second strafing pass only scored 1 hit. The
Typhoons scored full, however. The Germans couldn't get a
favourable combat result either, but there were some good Allied
combat rolls. Due to the dense clouds, the Germans are unlikely
to get bounce modifiers.
Score:
Allied Bombing 13 halved to 6,5, 6 ftrs: 12,5
Germans: 4
TOTAL: 8,5, Allied win
Comment: I went back and checked my playtest notes, and see I
advocated that the Thunderbolts should be flights, but perhaps
that was changed back in later testing. Also, the timing used to
be that the Germans could attack the Thunderbolts the turn they
bombed and the Typhoon the turn before it bombed, if they passed
the tally roll. With the current rules, the Typhoon would have
to move back one square and the Germans set up on top of the
Allies for that to work. This might require a fixed setup for
the Allies or they could push the Germans into the clouds.

Do you want to test those changes, Elias, and list them for me?

I struggled quite a bit with the setup. Both the changed tally
roll and the increased MPs of FB:s did indeed affect the
scenario a lot. If you move the typhoons farther away from the
target, they are also farther away from the Germans meaning they
won't get to tally them in time, and if you have them come from
the same direction as the Thunderbolts, the target has to be so
far away that the two fights become totally separate. Then I hit
on the solution: [move]Rule 15.2.5[/move]. A special rule that
forces the Typhoons to fly over the target and attack it from
the left (presumably after spotting them). I played this through
and it worked great! The result was a massive German win, with 5
Thunderbolts and 1 Typhoon lost for only 2 points for bombing
and 2 German fighters shot down. But it felt like an outlier
where the Allies underperformed both in bombing and air combat.
My gut feeling is that the scoring levels need to go up one or
two points, but with the changes below, I think this one is
ready for further playtesting. The Germans can get some limited
advantages in air combat, and by attacking they prevent the
Allies to score even more from bombing.
Move clouds up 1 level
Typhoons in W1
Germans K-L 3 or higher
Add German split limit 2 (frankly I didn't even think of order
splitting until now but it is nice to have another option and
the German quality means it is no great advantage)
Add special rule: If the typhoons attack the trucks, they have
to do so from the left per rule 15.2.5.
I think special rule 3 is given from the setup instructions, and
could be cut if more space is needed in the rules. Given the new
setup, special rule 6 is not really needed either.

I've incorporated those changes. You shall see them in the next
release.

Scenario: S08 First Blood on D-Day.
Version: v1.1.
Playtester: Scott Spencer(solo)
Report: German were stacked in K3,K4,L3, and L4. Wing Leader
rolled a six for tally and opted to have two squadrons and a
flight attack the P-47s while the remaining green squadron swept
on in hopes engaging the Typhoons. One P-47 rolled well and
scored all the bomb hits on the panzers. Air combat was over
within two turns with all squadrons broken, leaving just the
green 190 against the Typhoons. The 190 engaged the Typhoons
but was broken on the first attack. Typhoons were able to
rocket the trucks but were broken by ground fire when making a
subsequent strafing attempt.
Victory: Allies - three Fighters downed for 3VP. Seven Bombs
hit on Tanks for three VP(halved to two) and three rocket hits
for four VP(halved to two) = 7 VP. Germans downed six fighters
for 6VP. 7-6 = +1 German Victory. Felt like German Victory.
Recommendations: None. The Allies rolled poorly in the air to
air and with better rolls it probably would have been a tie.

Scenario: S08 First Blood on D-Day.
Version: v2.0.
Report: Same setup as before. Germans failed to tally on turn
one but P-47s botched their free attack on the panzers, only
scoring three hits. Germans spotted on turn two and went all in
on the P-47s. Seven P-47s were lost for four 190s. Typhoons
scored four hits on the trucks and lost one plane to ground
fire.
Victory: Allies - Four VP for 190s, one VP for panzers(3 hits =
1.5 rounded up to 2 then halved), and two VP for Trucks(4 hits
= 4VP halved to 2VP) = 7VP. Germans eight VP for fighters. 7-8
= -1 German Victory. Felt like German victory. Germans
definitely had luck on their side.
Recommendations: None at this time. Using bombing results is
always going to make this one a bit streaky.

S 08
v 2.0
Solo
Plan was for lead 2 sweepers to go after the P-47's and the
trailing the Typhoons.
FLAK- small arms, nothing shot down, slapped a -1 on the first
bomb run.
BOMBING- 4 hits on trucks, VP's halved to 4 VP.
5 hits on tanks, VP's halved to 2 VP.
6 VP
LOSSES- 4 x P-47
4 x 190
4 VP each
VICTORY- 10-4 for +6, American victory. Felt like American
victory.
THOUGHTS- seems balanced, quick little scenario. Want to run
again and play around with Germans opening set up.

trucks, 3 hits for 4 VP, halved to 2 VP
LOSSES- 7 x P-47
3 x Typhoon
10 VP
VICTORY- 4 -10 for -6 for a German victory, felt like a German

THOUGHTS- German was rolling high on combats and loss rolls.
Seems balanced, don't think a thing needs changed.

Scenario: S08 First Blood on D-Day - Test 01
Version: v2.0 (10th Jan Edition)
Playtester: Jean Foisy [Solo]
Plans:
- Allied Plan: P-47 target tanks at first. The Typhoon will
attack the trucks
- Axis Plan: All A/C will attack the Thunderbolts. The Typhoon
will be next, givent that it needs few turns to reach the target

Report:
- Game lasted 6 turns
- Axis 2 x Experten counters were assigned to Wing leader and
another Squadron
- The first P-47 got a modified 2H on the tanks before being
intercepted by the Wing-Leader and the flight; breaking the
P-47.
- The second P-47 broke under the atack of 2 FW squadrons. It
broke before bombing scheduled the following turn.
- The Typhoon attcked the Truck with ATGR and strafing. It
rolled a Snakeye for no effects!!
Victory:
ALLIED VPs:
Axis A/C shot down: 8 x FW: 8 VPs
ALLIED bombing Results:
- 2 Hits on N-0 Tank (Slight Damage): 1 VP
ALLIED TOTAL = 9 VPs
AXIS VPs:
Allied A/C shot down: 4 x P-47 (4 VPs) + 2 Typhoons (2 VPs) = 6

AXIS TOTAL = 6 VPs
SCENARIO TOTAL: +3 --> AXIS victory [Perceived Victory Level:
AXIS].
Recommendations: None
