Do close escorts have to return to a close escort position to
resume escort duty?

It is a bit ambiguous. Rule 9.2.2.1 says the only difference is
the setup square.
Rule 9.2.2.2 says "During movement select a destination square
that meets the criteria for setting up as an escort (i.e. within
three squares of a bomber squadron,
etc.)", which is specific, but a rules lawyer might well argue
that the exception for close escort setup in 9.2.2.1 is also an
exception to 9.2.2.2, and it would have to select a destination
square that meets the criteria for close escort setup.
In the end it's your game and it can be whatever you want it to
be :-)

It depends on how you want it to work. I would add something to
9.2.2.1 that a close escort wanting to return to escorting under
9.2.2.2 no longer have to follow the close escort restrictions
but is treated as a normal escort.
