       One more data set . . .
Scenario: S12 The Return of the Guards
       Version: v1.5
       Player(s): Dave Demko (solo)
Narrative: The Soviet plan was to put Veterans and Experten in
the high and low squadrons, set a high vector, send the low
squadron to split and engage the Fw 190Fs and let the rest grind
up the Stukas. The Axis plan was to put an Experte and Veteran
in the Bf 109s ready to split, have Experten in the Escorts, and
use a steep-angle bomb run. Everyone was able to implement their
plans with almost no interference from bad dice. The Soviets
forced one fighter-bomber to jettison, breaking it. The Axis
made effective use of dogfights to protect most of the bombers,
but their air-to-air losses were high. The Soviets used maximum
splits, fought hard, and broke a little on the early side. Flak,
always shooting barrages, was effective. Bombing was not.
       Results:
       Bombing (all against the tanks):
       190F bombs the tanks +1
       25% = = 4 hits (average would have been 10% for 1 hit)
       Fw 190F strafes +3
       50% = 1 hit
       Fw 190F (broken) strafes -2
Whoa! 50% = 1 hit (average dice would have yielded 0 hits)
       Stuka dive-bomb -1
0% = 0 hits (average dice would have yielded 1
       Stuka dive-bomb +2
whiff 0% = 0 hits (average dice would have yielded 4 hits)
       Fw 190 (broken) strafes 0
25% = 1 hit (average dice would have yielded 0 hits)
Axis VP for bombing Slight 1 VP + Heavy 3 VP = 4 VP
Axis VP for kills 6 VP
Soviet VP for kills = 13 VP
net -1 for a Soviet victory
Soviet victory feels right given the poor bombing results.
Before the last turn the Soviets felt like they were merely
drawing because of the effective bomber protection. But since
that came at a high cost in Axis aircraft losses, and because
Soviet flak was effective, yes, the close Soviet victory seems
       appropriate.
Recommendations: I still don't have a beef with this scenario.
It seems balanced and offers both sides some interesting
options. The Soviets player might like more flexibility for
setting up the wing leader, but that's not necessary. The sides
converge quickly, but that's fine. Setting up to allow another
turn of opening moves would tip balance toward the Soviets, and
I do not recommend that. The Soviets might or might not be able
to frustrate escort reaction. Sorry: Unless I play it opposed, I
may not discover anything to dislike about this scenario.

Thanks, Pete. Could I have you please move on to S29 Kursk
       Counterattack now?

Rick had a comment on return of the Guards and how it fitted
with the FB rules on gun pods. I have added a rule specifying
that Fw 190Fs cannot carry gun pods in this mission.
