       A Re.2005 Scenario?
By: Vincent Lefavrais Date: May 5, 2020, 10:49 am

       Lee,
While getting about the Supremacy proofing business, I chanced
upon a potential scenario candidate showcasing the Re.2005. I
seem to remember it's one of those leftover planes you regretted
not being able to introduce in the WL family. With the Legends
testing in full swing, though, things are probably moot but I
thought I'd give you a rundown of the scenario situation anyway.
Source: SHORES, History of the Mediterranean Air War 1940-1945.
Vol. 4, Sicily and Italy to the Fall of Rome, 14 May 1943-5 June
       1944.
       Date: August 19, 1943
Target: Marsalling yards and electrical machinery at Foggia,
       Italy
       123 B-17Fs (301st BG and 2nd BG) escorted by 57 P-38Gs (14th FG
and 82nd FG) bomb the targets. The US crews report being
attacked by 70-75 hostile aircraft around 1200 as they approach
Foggia, perform their bomb run, and leave the target area. (Just
for the record, they claimed 34 of these were shot down. Ha ha
       Ha.)
The Axis interceptors were the following:
I./JG 77 (based Foggia, reported 12 serviceable Bf 109G-6 on
       August 20)
       II./JG 53 (based Grazzanise--about 200 km west of Foggia,
reported 26 serviceable Bf 109G-6 on August 20)
       III./JG 53 (based Cancello-Arnone--about 200 km west of Foggia,
reported 22 serviceable Bf 109G-6 on August 20)
IV./JG 3 (based Foggia, reported 24 serviceable Bf 109 on August
       20)
       22o Gruppo CT (5x MC.202, 5x Re.2005)
5x B-17s (at least 3 confirmed kills by the Foggia flak
       defences) and 2x P-38s were lost, while 4x Bf 109 and 1x MC.202
       were downed.
Now, there is not much more details available, but I remember
you instructing scenario designers to be creative if needed
"within the bounds of reality" in order to have a good story to
tell, so I guess this would not prevent developing the scenario
further. Another important thing for a new scenario was also to
tell a story which had not already been told in the WL scenario
corpus, though. That's where you and the test gang would be
better than me in telling whether there is really something
interesting to milk from the situation.
Beside the Re.2005 flight, that it. ;)

As you say, the issue is moot with legends. However, it's good
to know and if we ever do any future stuff we can certainly
       consider it.

Having read through Shores as well there was sadly nothing
bigger than a flight to be found.
