Escorts and fighter-bombers
By: Elias Nordling Date: March 8, 2020, 2:20 pm

Here's one I haven't thought of before:
A fighter escorts a fighter-bomber. The FB drops its bombs, or
it tallies, in any case it switches to sweep. There is now
nothing for the fighter to escort. What happens?
The only part in the escort rules applies specifically to
bombers that escape (surely destroyed should apply here too?),
and then the escorts have to return to base. That doesn't seem
like the intention in case a fighter bomber has just jettisoned
because it tallied. 15.2.2 gives you ways to avoid the
situation, but only if there is a bombing target.
I think this needs to be adressed by the rules, and for now I'm
going to play that they switch to sweep, which seems like in the
spirit of the rules. In fact I think the best solution would be
to have a catch all rule saying "if the escort is unable to
escort for reasons not covered by other rules, go to sweep".

I'm not yet sure how we are going to deal with this. Whether we
need to bolt something onto the rule or perhaps there's a
fundamental change we make to the escort rules.

It seems to me we need an addition to 9.2.2.2 that says
something like "(d) If there are no bombers left to escort." and
then add a sidebar saying something like: If bombers escape
[11.0] or change their mission from bombing to sweep [15.2.4]
the escort changes its mission to sweep.
My problem is freeing up page space to add the extra line. I'm
thinking of moving the clumsy exception sentence at the end of
9.2.1 to the sidebar. I feel that there must be a better and
less clunky way of indicating that the bombing and escort rules
change with the bombing attack rules.

I think that addition would clarify the situation.
This leads me to another question along this line - can fighters
escort other fighters? I'm thinking specifically of Reich Home
Defense situations - Sturmbocks or Me-410s being escorted by
Me-109s for example.

No, we don't really do that. We certainly have the ability to
set up sweep fighters covering other sweep fighters or
interceptors covering other interceptors. However, a premise of
the game is that bomber aircraft employ entirely different
slower-flying formations than fighters on a sweep or intercept.
We simply don't have a situation like that.

That seems like a good solution.
