Re: Supremacy second edition

I’ve just posted a version of the Supremacy scenario book to
dropbox. This has been expanded to 40 pages and I’ve thrown in
the seven supplemental scenarios and Scott’s A-36 scenario.
There’s a whole bunch of work needs doing to this book.
(1) All existing scenarios need reviewing. Variants that need
underlining must be underlined. Where necessary, split limits
must be added. And all this is before we think of retesting any
of the scenarios.
(2) The What ADC Do I Use? list needs updating. There’s been a
lot of changes since the first printing, plus the four new ADCs
have to be added.
(3) Three new scenarios to add. I have a possible candidate for
the Ta 152 scenario from Scott. I want to generate two Bomber
Command scenarios.
(4) I will copy-paste in the ‘what’s changed from first edition’
page from the Victories 2e scenario book.
When Vincent is free I’d love him to do one of his legendary
passes on this book to whip it into second edition shape.
As for the Bomber Command scenarios I have a few candidate
actions to base scenarios around:
5 December 44 - A big force of Lancs and Halifaxes were sent to
bomb Soest rail yards. Apparently a large Gefechsverband was
assembled against them but could not penetrate the screen of
Spits and Mustangs, losing 14 fighters for one Spit loss. Could
be a good showcase for British escort, especially if we
designate the Mustangs as Mustang IVs.
12 December 44 - 3 Group Lancs target Witten. It seems the
Germans regarded these raids as easier than the Yank attacks.
They find the Lancs without escort and claim 8 before RAF
Mustangs turn up late, because they’ve been battling two other
JG 27 elsewhere.
24 December 44 - This is something of a mystery mission, as 4, 6
and 8 Group Halifaxes and Lancs were involved in bombing
Düsseldorf and Mülheim airfields, but the Germans didn’t get
through to them. Caldwell is unspecific but it’s possible they
were fended off by Allied sweeps, so we have the latitude to
play with this one.

Through last week I had been entertaining the hope that we
wouldn't need a new rulebook - in other words I hoped that the
Victories v2.2 rulebook would be it and we'd do no more for
Supremacy 2e than reskin it with Supremacy art and examples.
However, Elias's recent comments on escort behaviours suggest we
may have to go through another round of revisions to make a
v2.2.1 rule set.
So, if we go this route (and I'm not 100% convinced yet) I
suppose there should be some ground rules.
(1) No completely new rules.
(2) Rule changes must be fixes for identified problems or
clarifications only.
To which I'd add there probably needs to be a higher bar for
changes than was in the last round of updates.

Lee,
I'm starting a proofing pass on the newest scenario book. With
regards to (1) above, I'll do the variant underlining required
as I go. I'll leave the Split Limits to the real players around
here.
Regarding (2), the list currently included in the PDF is the
result of a proofing pass I did at the time we were trying to
set the WL ADC ecosystem up for good, some months ago. So it's
not as hopelessly outdated as you make it sound to be; I'll
review it along with the rest of the book, of course, but we
have a strong start.
The Supremacy ADC PDF available at the dropbox is dated Aug
2019, though, so it's missing the four additional ADCs you
mention in (2). Have you settled down on them already, or is
this something to decide a bit later (probably in conjunction
with the new scenarios)?
Cheers!

The four ADCs are looking currently like:
* Lancaster B Mk.III
* Halifax B Mk.III
* A-36A Mustang
* Ta 152H-1
These are reasonably fixed. Though it depends in part on us
getting Scott's A-36 scenario to work.
When I looked at the scenario book yesterday I realised there
was a lot of variant underlining done, though of course I may
have missed stuff.

For the Bomber Command missions this has proved a jolly read:
HTML https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/18664
It confirms my view that Bomber Command tended to try and fly in
streams rather than formations, and we may need to reflect this
in the scenarios.
One idea to do this is to set up all bomber squadrons with a
Straggler marker.

So today I’ve done a chunk of work on the Supremacy rulebook and
posted a new rulebook file, WL_Rulebook_2-2-1_14Mar20.pdf up on
dropbox.
(a) I’ve added in the fix to rule 9.2.2.2, ruling that escorts
switch to sweep if there are no bombers left to escort. The fix
includes a sidebar clarification.
(b) This addition is sufficient for me to mark the rules set
v2.2.1.
(c) I have done an initial pass of ‘Supremacyfying’ the document
- converting it from the green to blue cover and replacing
examples with late war as opposed to early war aircraft. This
will all need to be proofed again.
At some point we will trawl through all the feedback since the
v2.2 rules came out last year and see if there are any further
text changes to be made. However, I want to limit this to
critical fixes and clarifications only.

I've found a few things that could use a definition in the rules
since it was locked down, like the escort climbing and diving
the same turn. I think I've posted them all here.

We may need to be quite hard-arsed on some of these things. If
they are really uncommon or obscure we might not patch them.

I've taken Scott's Höhenjäger mission and done some fairly major
surgery to it, to depict only part of JG 301's fight. I have
recast it as a counterfactual that assumes the Ta 152s were able
to get into the fight. I've also reset the Ta 152s to their
correct, historical strength.
I'll publish this once Vincent's proofing comes back.

I've created a quite neat Bomber Command scenario based on the
12 December battle that permits the Germans to bounce unescorted
Lancs from cloud while their Mustang IV protection races to
intervene.
