L22 Black Monday Over Ore Mountains
By: pilotofficerprune Date: February 15, 2020, 12:32 pm

So to mark the transfer of the scenario over to the main book,
here's the writeup of the playthrough from Gordon.
[quote]Orphan playtest report on Black day over the Ore
Mountains. If there is/ was a better place to put it apologies
for not finding it:-))
Andrew & I had a second run at this about a month ago with
couple of tweaks (regard this as another failed GCI roll
resulting in random interception of an alpha test target...).
As previously discussed it is an excellent scenario.
We shifted the lefthand P-51 from A13 to B16 and adjusted the
B-17s to a 6 squadron setup in P12 (2), O11 (2) and O13 (2). We
felt this probably reflected late war 8th AF formations a bit
better and it gives the Sturmbocks a bit more to go after if
they get to the merge with the bombers intact.
Final outcome was 7 bombers and 4 US fighters lost against 21 LW
fighters (9 109s, 12 190s). 1 bomber squadron broken, 1
disrupted so 27 exit VPs.
Final VPs:
US 27 (exit) + 21 (AtA)---> 48
LW 25 AtA
Final score +23 which felt like a draw.
We felt the changes to be a (small) improvement on an otherwise
excellent scenario. In particular moving the P-51s to B16 from
A13 gives them much more chance to get into the action & gives
the US player more choices about location of fighter resources.
Our alpha test suggestions for this one would be to go with
these changes:
6 B-17 squadrons (as above)
P-51 squadron in A13 moved to B16
Cheers

I'm happy to make the set-up changes for the P-51s, but I'm not
completely convinced by doubling the B-17s at the moment.

Hi Lee
I just played this as written in v0.2 which has 3 B-17
squadrons. It was a bloody massacre.... reading Gordon’s AAR
just now I noticed he had 6 or 7 B-17 squadrons... so I’m
guessing that 3 is not right. I can back this up a few turns and
give you a meaningful report with 6 sqns if you’d like (still a
German victory but much more in line with the Victory levels you
have set.
Please advise.

I'm not sure why going to 6 bomber squadrons (Petr's original
featured half that number) would make a major difference. Can
Gordon or Andrew explain why?

Sorry, i mean also to say that the same scenario in the
DOWNLOADS booklet (before it was moved to yhe main scenario
book) has 6 squadrons not 3. See attached images.

If you go back to the scenario on BGG it does have 3 B-17 sqns
but the draw margin is -15 to -10 which would line up perfectly
with my results today (germans scored - 12)

Not to be annoying but if you reverse the math and subtract the
German vp from the American vp that works better as well. It
felt like a marginal German victory.
USAAF: downed 10 German fighters and exited three disrupted B-17
squadrons: 19 vp
Luftwaffe: downed 7 USAAF fighters and downed 8 B-17s: 31 vp
So i’ll get my report to you late tonight or tmw and my
recommendation will be to reverse the math on the victory
calculation.

This scenario has had an odd history in that the original
version of it only had three bomber squadrons. This was changed
to 6 on Gordon and Andrew’s recommendation, but I reversed this
back to 3, as I didn’t see it making much difference to play.
(Yes, you get the Heavy Bomber defence bonus, but that should
have a marginal effect overall.)
Sure, the VP outputs are different with 3 rather than 6, but
that’s a simple business of rearranging the victory levels and
calculation based on anticipated exchange rates.
