       Re: L03 Falcons Over France

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       v0.3
Players: Elias Nordling (Italians), Andrew Brazier (French),
       PBEM.
We modified the scenario by lopping off the topmost Italian
sweep squadron, and this opened up the game considerably. Both
sides now felt they were under pressure. In our game,
marksmanship was poor all over the board leading to mostly light
losses. The exception was the flak, and the two Cr42 squadrons
tasked with silencing them didn't do so as much as impaling
themselves on them. All while the Blochs circled above them
       watching the show.
       Final score:
       French: 5 CR42s & 4 BR20s = 13VP
       Italian VPs: 1 Bloch & 3 MS406 + 1VP for a hit on the airfield
and 1 VP for damaging the FLAK = 6VP.
       Final score, 7VP, French win
       Felt like French win
Comment: We think the change is what the scenario needs. We're
going to try the scenario again to see if this result was an
       outlier.
PS, apologies for any spelling mistakes. You know you're tired
when it takes three attempts to spell your own name right.

Roger that. If the new config works out we'll try to get some
other testers to run through it a few times and see what data
       comes out.
Also, as you noted, this gives us back a spare counter slot.

       v0.3
Players: Elias Nordling (Italians), Andrew Brazier (French),
       PBEM.
This was a re-run of the previous modified scenario (O9 CR42
sweep removed). Again, there were not easy options for either of
us, the three high French squadrons were unable to get an
undisturbed bounce on the bombers despite getting the better of
the tally rolls but two out of three did get to engage the
bombers, only one French squadron was blocked from intercepting
the bombers. The Blochs faced off with the straffers lower down.
Combat dice were pretty poor all round whilst cohesion dice were
above average for the most part. FLAK was more or less
       ineffectual.
The Blochs abandoned pursuit of the straffers once they got to
their pushover point and tallied the trailing bombers instead.
At this point, despite multiple combats there were very few
losses on either side. The strafers successfully silenced the
FLAK so the bombers were able to let down to altitude 4 and with
no FLAK bomb with 0 DRM. All three bombers bombed undisrupted
scoring 6 hits total (the straffers got 1 with straffing).
The remaining French fighters (one flight of De520s and the
Blochs) then suddenly learned to shoot straight and shot down 6
more bombers and a Cr42 in the final turns before everything
       exited the map edge.
       Final scores:
       French VPs: 5 CR42, 8 Br20s = 21VP
       Italian VPs
       Amazingly, only 1 kill (Bloch).
Bombing, 2VP for FLAK plus 10VP for the airfield = 13VP.
       Final Score:
+8VP, French win. Totally saved by excellent cohesion rolls and
the last couple of turns where they managed to get several
       bomber kills.
Comments: The air combat dice were even handed until the last
two turns where the French got lucky which saved the game for
them. Bombing was average. Overall, we think this version is
more balanced and ready for further testing. Thanks Elias! :)

Okay, so these two most recent tests form the baseline for
       subsequent testing.
       Italian bombing - 2 + 12 = mean 7.0
       French losses - 4 + 1 = mean 2.5
       Italian losses - 13 + 21 = mean 17.0
This gives us a net VPs of +7.5.
       Two thoughts:
       (1) I’m still concerned that the Italians can win this one by
running away and avoiding combat. The balance of VPs is against
them, but we need to find a way that preserves this set-up but
       forces the Italians to attack.
       (2) I’m going to need to draft in some more help to balance the
       result.
So, first, suggestions for fixing point (1).

The sweep in O9 still intact? It looks like on the last run
       through it was taken out.

The sweep in O9 was removed, yes.
For balance, you could just say the French gets X points if no
bombs are dropped on the airfield.

That's a fallback position, perhaps a 10 VP bonus to the French
if no hits are scored on the airfield.

       Game 1
       v 0.4
       Solo
       French vets/experten in DE520
Italian green in escort, experte in top CR 42,
       and veteran in lead BR20
FLAK- shot down a CR 42, affected 3-4 bomb runs
BOMBING- complete fiasco, not a thing was hit,
       not even with strafing
       LOSSES- 2 X BR 20
       10 x CR 42 (1 from FLAK)
       14 points
       2 x De520
       1 x MS406
       4 x Bloch
       7 points
VICTORY- 14-7, +7 French victory (felt like
       French victory)
De520 vet with experte had a
field day, somewhat balanced by CR20 squadron rolling a 12 and
getting 3 kills in 1 combat. Everything comes down to the
bombing results for the Italians. Point wise, the table looks
good. I am going to run this again and see how it shakes out.

I got the best bombing result by climbing the strafers to
altitude 5 then steep angle bomb the flak, and dive the mediums
       to altitude 4.

I did drop the mediums to 4, I will try the steep angle with
       the strafers.
       Thanks
