Scenario:Falcons Over France
Version: 0.1
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
- French Veterans assigned to MB.151 & MS.406;Italian
Veteran/Experte to the N column SweepSqn. The Green C.42 sqn was
the O column Sweep
- D.520 flights set up in K6 & K5 respectively
- Height error for the MS.406 sqn placed at H10
- The leading two Cr.42 seeps we’re engaged with the topmost
D.520 flight for the first few turns. I turned one sqn facing
each way at the end of that combat and one of the sqns never
made tally again and effectively dropped out of the game.
- The MS.406 sqn and one D.520 flight did most of the attacking
against the Br.20s they rolled well but given the good ratio
against most Cr.42 defenders I would expect a fair number of
bomber losses (maybe 3-4 with average rolls?)
- The MB.151 sqn intercepted the trailing strafer sqn right
before it went into flak and was able to force it into a
dogfight, jettisoning it’s bombs.
-
Bombing Summary:
- Strafing was by one Cr.42 sqn only. No damage was inflicted
since the hits were 10% and 25% respectively.
- The first two Br.20s rolled low and scored 0% hits, the third
scored a 25% hit doing 4 damage
French: +7 vp fighters downed, +16 vp bombers downed = +23 vote
Regia Aeronautica: -2 vp fighters downed, -5 vp Airfield minor
damage= -7
Victory: French
Total: +16 VP
Recommendations:
- it will take another play or two to really know but my guess
is that the vps will need to slide a bit towards the Italians.
Seems like this particular play was ended up skewed towards the
French but the rolls definitely went their way.
- I like the forces and their deployment so currently recommend
no change

I won't tweak the scoring just yet. let's get one or two more
plays in before we touch that. I just want to get the sense of
whether the scenario gives enough options for players - is there
enough tactical choices/variety?

There are a lot of interesting choices in this scenario for sure
I’m not sure the scoring needs any tweaking at all, just sort
of throwing out some initial feelings. The first play really is
just getting a feel for things in my experience.
I’ll try and give it another go in a week.

Andrew and I had a couple of goes at this over Christmas while
we were waiting for our vectors from Wing Leader GCI towards out
intended targets.....
Bottom line is that we are reasonably happy with it but suggest
some minor tweaks (below).
Run 1 saw the Italians lose 3 bombers and 5 fighters (2 to flak)
whilst the French lost 3 fighters. 2 hits on the airfield for
only one bombing VP (probably a below average bombing/ strafing
performance). Final VP were 11 (French) to 4 (Italian) which
felt like a marginal French victory. the dice probably favoured
the French
We felt that the D520s were probably a little too low and at
risk of being taken out of play too quickly by good Italian
tallies allowing the Italians to attack from above (as with all
rigid doctrine scenarios this one places a lot of weight on
being the attacker so small altitude advantages make a big
difference in terms of being able to set the terms of the combat
and magnify attacker advantage). We moved the D520s up to
altitude 7 & added another broken cloud in L5 to limit the
possibilities of early tallies by the high D520s on the low Cr
42s. As the French coming down early is seductive but probably a
bit of a trap as it takes any D520s that come down out of play
against the main bomber force leaving the remaining high
fighters badly outnumbered & even good outcomes against the
Cr42s-which are by no means a given, especially if the Italians
can force dogfights-are unlikely to compensate for the Bombers
having a fairly clear run. It also prevents early counter
tallies by the low Cr42s which might allow them to abandon their
strafing & come up to join the main action, leaving the French
fighters significantly outnumbered. Finally it makes the
confrontation between the strafing Cr 42s & the MB 152s more of
a stand alone event-which, given the very different
characteristics of the aircraft involved together with the
Italians strafing mission leaves both sides with some
interesting choices.
Second time out we felt the modified setup worked a bit better.
The dice were almost comically one sided with the French killing
12 fighters and 5 bombers for no loss(!!) slightly compensated
by 10 hits on the airfield. VP were 22 (French) against 10
(Italian) for +12 and a solid French win.
Overall we're happy with this as an alpha test. There are
choices for both sides, the aircraft mix is interesting with
plenty of Cr 42s (always a good thing :-)) and an interesting
mix of French fighters including the capable D520s (with still
need to avoid dogfights with the Cr42s...). We'd be inclined to
nudge the D520s up to alt 7 as they struggle to either engage
with any advantage or have enough time to climb to get above the
Italians in time to engage the bombers from altitude 6, and
separate the high & low actions slightly more at the start by
adding cloud in L5.
Cheers
Gordon

Scott, can you please test these changes:
(1) D.520s start at Alt 7
(2) Place Broken cloud in L5

Scenario:Falcons Over France— January 17, 2020
Version: 0.1+changes as per LBW
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
- French Veterans & experten assigned to D.520 flight &
MS.406;Italian Experte to the N column SweepSqn. The Green C.42
sqn was the O column Sweep. The veteran Italian was assigned to
the middle Bomber sqn.
- D.520 flights set up in H7 & G7 respectively
- Height error for the MB.151 sqn placed at %4
- The veteran/experten French units ended up in combat with
Falco squadrons the entire game and never attacked the Br.20s.
The trained D.520 flight vectored in on the leading bombers in
broken clouds and then tallied them the following turn. Their
escorts then came to the defense. This flight downed 2 of the
three downed bombers the other was downed by flak.
- In this game the MB.151s had a height error and then missed
their Tally rolls for 3 turns. They were vectored down on the
strafing Falcos but didn’t get to attack until after both
strafing squadrons had dropped bombs.
- All Falco squadrons were able to contribute to combat with
none totally failing to tally.
Flak Summary:
- Small Arms Barrage= 1 no effect hit and caused a cohesion roll
on the strafing Falco squadrons.
- Direct Fire Light Flak= scored 5 hits resulting in three
losses (1 Cr.42, 1 D.520 and 1 Br.20).
Bombing Summary:
- strafing squadrons scored 1 point of damage each with bombs
and no damage with strafing (one strafing attack by the lead
squadron)
- The lead Br.20 did 0% hits but the middle (veteran) sqn rolled
a natural 12 (+1 veteran, -1 altitude) scoring 100% hits and the
trailing bombers scored 25% hits for a total of 16 damage to the
airfield.
- Total damage was 18 and thus Fatal to the Airfield
French: +8 vp fighters downed, +8 vp bombers downed = +16 vp
Regio Aeronautica: -2 vp fighters downed, -30 vp Airfield Fatal
damage= -32
Victory: Italian
Total: -16 VP
Recommendations:
- Obviously this game swung way to the opposite end VP-wise. The
100% hit was made possible by assigning a veteran counter to a
bomber, otherwise the Italian VP would have been -22 or less.
Obviously the most likely result is a total of 5 damage since
most a/c will score 10% hits. So this game was a real outlier
but not one that is impossible to achieve.
- IF you want to preclude 100% hits then a special rule should
be included restricting the Veteran counter to Sweep or escort
squadrons.
- Now that I have seen the other end of the spectrum I currently
wouldn’t move the vps.
- My feeling is this is a balanced scenario, the new set up and
clouds are a good change and if anything changes it might be a
mere fine tuning to the victory levels.
- I think this scenario is ready for Beta players

I'll add in your proposed rule on Veteran marker placement and
mark this as having passed Alpha.
