Re: L05 Operation Retribution

v0.3
Player: Elias Nordling (Solo)
The IK-3 might have a wonky setup, but its advantageous position
now saves it from being a green marker dump for the Yugoslavs.
Overall, the scenario felt right now. The Yugoslavs get through
to the bombers (11 attacks on the bombers in total here), will
suffer heavy losses for doing so, but at least on a good day
will gain more from the attack than they lose. The Germans feel
like they have their hands full, not like they are cruising to
victory.
In this case, I felt the Yugoslavs had fairly hot dice,
especially the veteran hurricane ace which downed 4 Dorniers.
The defenders also caused two disruptions on attacking bombers,
while the flak was fairly ineffective this time round.
Score:
Germans
9 bombing hits: 12. 10 Bf109e, 3 IK3: 25
Yugo: 3 Bf110, 1 Bf109, 4 Do17, 2 He111, 1 Ju87: 18,5
Total: 6,5 Draw
Felt like: Yugoslav win
Comment: The scoing levels probably need to go down a bit, as
this felt like, if not exactly a Yugoslav outlier then at least
a really good showing.

I think this one is ready for scoring calibration, and I'm ready
to take another scenario.

Okay, I have adjusted the victory levels slightly. I going to
get a second view on this before I mark it Alpha-ready.
Elias, can you move on to soloing L02 A Foreign Legion?

Scenario:L05 Operation Retribution — February22 , 2020- PLAY #1
Version: 0.4
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
- Game lasted 8 turns
- There was one height error affecting one of the VVKJ Bf-109
squadrons. It took this sqn several turns to successfully tally
then another 2 turns to climb into action.
- Initial tally rolls on both sides weren’t good and on average
most tally rolls were on the low end.
- The veteran/experte was assigned to the Top VVKJ Bf-109 sqn.
The Green sqn was assigned to a Hurricane sqn.
- The Luftwaffe experte was on the top sweep. Luftwaffe Veteran
was assigned to the trailing He-111 sqn, the green status was
assigned to the trailing Zerstörer sqn.
- For the most part the Luftwaffe was able to start dogfights in
most engagements, keeping the enemy Emils away from the bombers.
One Lw Emil sweep sqn did not tally for 4 turns.
- Both Zerstörer Sqns successfully reacted to VVKJ Bf-109
attacks on the two-engined bombers.
- The IK-3s downed 1 Bf-110, 1 Bf-109,
- Most bombers were downed by the Hurricanes however one of the
VVKJ Bf-109 Sqns downed 3 D0-17s in one turn.
Flak Summary:
- Direct flak fired in turns 2 - 4 disrupting the leading Stukas
and downing a Stuka from the trailing Ju-87 squadron
- Flak was suppressed by the second Stuka attack (turn 4)
Bombing Summary:
- 1 Stuka sqn scored 50% hits bs Flak for Heavy damage and
suppression
- 1 good order He-111 sqn scored 25% hits (5 dmg) vs the Factory
- 1 Do-17 sqn scored 50% hits (5 drag) on the Factory
- All others scored 0% hits usually due to cohesion modifiers
Luftwaffe: =+11 vp fighter kills; +3 vp Heavy dmg to Flak; +12
vp Heavy Damage to Factory= +26 vp
VVKJ: -4 vp fighters downed; -3 vp zerstörers downed; -1 vp
Stuka downed; -14 vp 2 engined bombers downed = -22 vp
Victory: VVKJ
Total: +4 VP
Recommendations:
- the scenario feels balanced to me based on this first play.
If even one other two engine bomber had scored a 25% hit or a
10% hit from another He-111 it would have given the Luftwaffe
another +12 vp which would have given them a victory. The number
of squadrons that “missed” felt right it’s my guess that 3-4
will score some sort of hit with total vp from bombing ranging
from 3- 36 max (extremely unlikely). If the one “blind” German
Bf-109 sqn has tallied earlier it may have downed another 1 or 2
Jugoslav aircraft driving the game into a draw. This was
balanced by the height error VVKJ 109 Sqn so I think these didnt
throw the play out of balance.
- The scenario can go a lot of different ways and there are
plenty of tactical options, though the initial challenge is just
to get the Jugoslav a/c into combat with bombers.

That's cool, Scott. I think that confirms what we know from
Elias's tests.
I won't ask you to make another pass at this. Can I ask you to
move on to L07 Clark Field and give that a run-over?

So for end of Alpha the VP outputs for the last two plays are as
follows:
German bombing - 12 + 15 = mean 13.5 VPs
Yugoslav losses - 13 + 11 = mean 12 VPs
German losses - 18.5 + 22 = mean 20.25 VPs
That gives us a mean score of +5.25 VPs. The perception is that
these feel like VVKJ wins, but that lucky bombing rolls could
tip the scenario the other way. I'm going to drop the draw
window by one for alpha, to +6 to +8.5 and see what further
testing reveals in terms of the German ability to win.

Game 1
v 0.5
Solo
Green in a 109, veteran and experte in Hurricane
German veteran in JU-87, experte in top 109
FLAK- nailed 2 x Ju-87 and 1 x Do 17, affected 2
bomb drops
BOMBING- 3 vps (2 VP for FLAK, 1 VP for a factory
hit)
LOSSES- 3 x Ju87 (2 from FLAK)
6 x Do17
1 x 110
4 x 109 (20.5 points)
3 x 109 E-3
3 x -3
1 x Hurricane (7 points)
VICTORY- 20.5 Yugo to 10 German for -10.5 (massive
Yugo victory)
Poor tally and combat rolls for Germans
plus poor escort support from the 110's who broke early. Not
sure if even going after the flak is worth it, the factory is
where the points are. Hurricane vet and experte were cleaning up
at the end. Going to change vet from Ju-87 to He 111 and see if
that helps bombing results a little.
RECOMMENDATIONS to follow after game 2.

Game 2
v0.5
Solo
Yugo green in Me 109, vet and experte in
Hurricane.
German vet in He 111, experte in top Me 109.
FLAK- again effective, 2 x Ju 87 and 1 He 111and
affected to bomb drops.
BOMBING- 6 vp on factory (needed 1 more hit for
another 6 vp)
LOSSES- 2 x Ju 87
3 x 109
5 x Do 17
1 x He 111 (17 points)
3 x 109 E-3
1 x IK-3
4 x Hurricane (8 points)
SCORE- Yugo 17 points, German 14 points for -3 Yugo
win, felt like Yugo win.
Germans again missed a couple of
tallies at the beginning of the game. Escort rolled snake eyes
on a reaction roll for no reaction. This and game 1 the luck was
not on the German side. Ju 87's did better, level bombing was
awful. It could be both these games were outliers or I haven't
come across the right German execution.
RECOMMENDATIONS- maybe give Germans another escort,
swing victory point threshold down a point or two or allow level
bombers to go to alt 4 before dropping. The end of the game
feels Battle of Britain-ish with 109's, Hurricanes, etc. Not a
bad thing at all.
