Well, actually, escort suadrons also turn to sweep when they
park while the bombers bomb, and then they can strafe too.

I did the strafing correctly, just didn't pay dividends.

Game 2
Vets in Italian bomber and 1 MC200 squadron. Soviet greens in I
16 sweep squadrons.
FLAK- somewhat effective, downed 1 MC 200 and broke a flight.
Other hits, but no damage.
Bombing- Soviets totally whiffed, 1 squadron was broken when it
dropped and suffered the -4 mod for being broken.
Italians put 50% of their bombs on the bunker,
netting 5 VP.
Losses- 2 MC 200 (one from FLAK)
2 SB's (Soviet escort did better than last time,
although cohesion rolls on the 1 SB were awful)
3 I-16
Score- 10.5 to 2, net 8.5 for Italian victory. Felt like Italian
victory.
Bombing has been atrocious for the Soviets in both games. At
this point, maybe swing the victory spread a point or two to
make it harder on the Italians, but want to run this through one
more time.

Great AAR, Forrest! You’re a test machine!
So let’s throw Forrest’s numbers into the mix:
Italian bombing VPs - 1 + 6 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 5 = mean 1.7 VPs
Soviet loss VPs - 3.5 + 7.5 + 18 + 14 + 17.5 + 17 + 5.5 = mean
11.8 VPs
Italian loss VPs - 6 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 5 + 9 + 2 = mean 5.8 VPs
Soviet bombing VPs - 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 0 = mean 2.0 VPs
This gives us a mean output of 13.5 - 7.8 = 5.7
Your two tests both represented extremes, both in bombing and
Italian losses, so these are good tests for calibration. I
wondered whether the mean would shift back from around +5 to +3,
but the averages are stuck more firmly on +5 to +6. I’m thinking
the Italian victory level needs to shift to +7 at the least,
suggesting a draw window of +4 to +6.5.
How does this change the results so far? Let’s look at the
logged tests:
1 = -5.5
2 = +6.5
3 = +8.0
4 = +8.0
5 = +8.5
6 = +6.0
7 = +8.5
Note that this shifts two of the Italian W’s into the D column.
Given that the mode of results is around +8 there’s still not
enough Soviet wins here. I wonder if we need to adjust the
Soviets slightly. I’m tempted to change the following:
(1) Add a Veteran to the Soviets with a special rule assigning
it to the SB. I think that getting at least 2 VP from bombing is
key to the Soviet win.
(2) Drop the number of Soviet Green markers by 1.
(3) Drop the number of Italian Experte markers by 1.
(4) Set the draw window to +4 to +6.5, with a Soviet Victory on
+3.5 or less and an Italian victory on +7 or more.
Forrest, is there any chance you could test the scenario again
with these changes?

Yes, I have a fair amount of time right now as work is slow and
I finished the latest Mantel novel on the fall of Thomas
Cromwell.
Will run this again with proposed changes.

Play test with changes (added Soviet vet to SB20 squadron,
dropped green squadrons from 4 to 3 for Soviets and just 1
experte for the Italians).
Italians had vets in bomber and the MC200 in H4 with experte.
Soviet greens in upper 3 squadrons of I 16.
FLAK- somewhat effective for Soviets with 1 BR20 downed and a
disruption of a MC200 squadron.
BOMBING- Soviets score 2 VP, Italians whiffed on the bunker.
LOSSES- Soviet
1 x SB20 (escorts fairly effective and the newly
promoted I-16 trained squadron tied up a MC200 which I usually
go after the Soviet bombers with)
5 x I 16
Italian
1 x BR.20 (shot down by FLAK)
8 x MC200 (I 16's had a good showing and forced a
dogfight which hurt the Italians)
Score- 11- 4.5 for -6.5 a Soviet victory
Felt like a Soviet victory.
Would like to run this again as I think Soviets
had a very above average day with their fighters and the
Italians whiffing on bombing kept their score low. Not having a
second experte with the Italians did it's trick, hard to get
kills with the peashooters the MC200's are equipped with.

Cool. I won't tabulate the data until you've done another run,
but if we can shave down the Soviet losses a bit I think this
puts the scenario in a healthier place.

2nd play test with changes (added Soviet vet to SB20 squadron,
dropped green squadrons from 4 to 3 for Soviets and just 1
experte for the Italians).
Italians had vets in bomber and the MC200 in H4 with experte.
Soviet greens in upper 3 squadrons of I 16.
FLAK- Soviets effective knocking down 1 BR 20 and 2 MC200 (the
2 fighters could have been avoided but they were trying to keep
a pesky I 16 from a clear go at the bombers).
Italians nailed a I 16
BOMBING- Soviets netted 2 VP (all damage done by the veteran
squadron)
Italians whiffed
LOSSES- Soviets
SB x 4 (one escort broke and the veteran Italian
(even split) would not break. Italians were beneficiaries of
some good luck with 2 of it's rolls being an 11 and 12, which
made up for a series of 4's and 5's earlier in the game.)
I 16 x 7
Italians
BR20 x 1 (from FLAK)
MC200 x 8 (2 from FLAK- see note on that above)
SCORE- Soviets 12
Italian 11.5
Net -.5 for Soviet win
Felt like a narrow Soviet win as they inflicted
some damage by bombing and Italian fighter losses were on high
end.
RECOMMENDATIONS- The changes with the Soviet vet SB crew and
only 3 greens have helped. The last two games with the changes
have been Soviet wins. If that continues maybe sliding the
victory conditions a couple of points the Italian way (Soviet
needing 1.5 or less to win).
Run again or do you want something else looked at?

Sorry to ask this favour, Forrest, but could you give me one
more run? With data from three tests of the new configuration
I'll have a solid basis to compare with the old.

3rd play test with changes (added Soviet vet to SB20 squadron,
dropped green squadrons from 4 to 3 for Soviets and just 1
experte for the Italians).
Italians had vets in bomber and the MC200 in H4 with experte.
Soviet greens in upper 3 squadrons of I 16.
FLAK- Italians nabbed a SB20
Soviets did nothing except break a I 16 squadron.
BOMBING- Soviets plastered the troops for 6 VP (all damage
done by the veteran squadron).
Italians managed 1 VP on the bunker.
LOSSES- Soviets
4 x SB
5 x I 16
10.5 points
Italians
4 x MC200
4 points
Score- Soviets 10, Italians 11.5 for 1.5 net for Soviet
victory
Felt like Soviet victory as troops were
plastered.
RECOMMENDATIONS- OOB is fine, maybe add back the
Italian experte. Slide everything back a point (+6 for Italian
win, +3 to +5.5 for draw and +2.5 or less for Soviet win.
Need another run?
