Re: L07 Disaster at Clark Field

Just before the 3rd test from Jean, I wanted to quickly tabulate
VPs for the plays since the last set of modifications:
Japanese bomber losses - 12 + 4 + 10 + 4 = mean 7.5
Japanese fighter losses - 0 + 8 + 6 + 8 = mean 5.5
US losses - 3 + 9 + 5 + 11 = mean 7.0
Japanese bombing - 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 = mean 30
That gives us an average total of 37 - 13 = +24 VPs. That’s
certainly within our draw window at present.
W/L so far is:
Gordon/Andrew 4 - +21 draw (perceived US victory)
Scott K - +27 Japanese victory
Jean 1 - +19 Draw (perceived Japanese victory because airfield
was plastered)
Jean 2 - +29 Japanese victory (perceived Japanese victory)
Given that we are consistently seeing fatal damage on the
Airfield I’m inclined to zero that out in the balancing. Failing
to get fatal on the Airfield should be a Japanese failure.
I suspect the draw window will shift upwards by perhaps +2 or
so, to +21 to +26, whoch would put Jean’s first playthrough in
the ‘L’ column for the Japanese. But let’s see whether the next
test shifts the numbers at all.

Scenario: L07 Disaster at Clark Field - test 3
Version: v0.3
Playtesters: Jean Foisy [Solo]
Report:
First turn bombing got 6 Hits suppressing the Airfield defence.
The Japanese fighters concentrating on the US defenders managed
to keep the US fighters at bay with only 1 bomber lost.
The tactic was to stick to a broken US unit "like glue" and
bring them down to get precious VPs.
In this they succeeded. The US tried to intercept the bombers
with the three P-40E units.
With early successful tallies the Japanese fighters engaged the
Warhawks before they can do much damage.
In turn 6 the P-35 tallied and was engaged by a Zero flight
resulting in 3 P-35 going down for no enemy. Almost real life
::)
Victory:
Japanese bombing: 22 hits(including 8 Strafing hits) for 30 VPs
Japanese enemies shot down: 12 VPs (5 P-40B + 4 P40E + 3 P-35)
JAPANESE TOTAL= 42 VPs
US enemies shot down: 4 VPs (1 Nell + 2 Zeros)
US TOTAL= 4 VPs
Scenario TOTAL: 38 VPs; --> Japanese Victory [Perceived Victory
Level: Japanese because of the air combat results]
Recommendations: None
I don't know if it was bad play of the US side or lucky dice
rolls for the Japanese side but that was a rout.

For now I'm going to adjust the victory levels slightly and then
bring in fresh eyes to look over this scenario.
I'm going to move you on, Jean, to L17 Royal Bulgarian Air
Force. Could you please give me two plays of it?

Elias and I are playing this one now.
You need Blitz for the P-40E squadrons. Scenario card just says
Victories and Origins is required.

Special rule 7 says double the number of hits in strafing. This
is ambiguous. Is 0.25 hits doubled to 0.5, or is 0.25 0 hits,
and 0 doubled is 0? If you double the firepower instead, the
problem is gone.

Okay, let's try that, then.

I think the current version of the scenario isn't tense enough,
but I think I know where I want to take it.
As is, the bombers plaster the airfield and the zeros are mostly
free to chase down the US Fighters, that have trouble catching
up with the bombers at all. So, this is what I'd like to see:
Reduced emphasis on bombing. To win, the Japanese should have to
do several successful passes of strafing. To deny the victory,
the US should have to engage the Japanese fighters in combat,
thus denying their strafing ability, but without losing too many
fighters in the process. The bombers should be an additional
concern, the US should have the option to go for the bombers
instead so that the Japanese can't just ignore escorting them
either.
Here's a list of changes that I hope will take us closer to this
ideal.
1) Remove special rule 5.
2) Reduce the Japanese veterans to 3
3) P-35 sets up in W6
4: P-40E's set up in O5, P5.
5) Add Lt Flak A to H0
6) The airfield doesn't have small arms fire (this and 6 makes
flak suppression an option for the bombers)
7) Deterministic bombing, one point per undisrupted bomber, on
either the flak or the airfield.
The Japanese should need to score 12 hits on the airfield or
make up for it in aircraft kills for a win.

So what I need from you Elias is a couple or more playthroughs
to check this rejig is working. If you think you have it where
you want it then I'll update the scenario with the changes and
ask others to come in and do some runs.
