Andrew and I have just had a go at this one-largely because I
had done the VASSAL setup when writing the scenario so it was
quick & easy to get into.
Played very satisfactorily. Some fighter vs fighter jousting
with a bit of manoeuvering for position initially followed by
the focus shifting to the bombers. Dice were swingy with the US
having the best of it initially., together with good bombing
rolls (7hits on the transport for +7 VP) but a final attack
downing 3 B-24s brought the Japanese back into contention at the
       last.
In alpha test terms we're happy with the setup & gameplay.
       Final outcome:
       IJNAAF 11 fighters lost
US 3 fighters 5 bombers lost 7 hits on Aux
       VP US 11 (AtA) + 7 (bombing)
       IJNAAF 33 (bombers doubled)
We thought a draw was a more appropriate result than a Japanese
       win.
       Suggestions:
I think the P-40s were a flight not a squadron- we played it as
       a flight.
I don't think the bomber doubling is necessary (gets rid of an
       SSR)
I think the right hand mB-24s were a flight of Navy PB4Ys- page
space may make it easier to keep them as a squadron but if they
became a flight it would make it more accurate historically.
Keeping the P-40s & B-24s as flights might make life a bit
easier for the US so another veteran for them & dropping a
Japanese veteran might be worth thinking about of further test
suggests it has swung too far towards the Japanese.
Overall though (accepting my possible bias) we felt it worked.
Diverse aircraft, with the Zero starting be outclassed but not
yet decisively so; choices for both sides & a struggle for the
Japanese to shoot down the tough B-24s.
VP balance needs tested but overall reasonably happy at alpha
       test stage.
       Cheers
       Gordon

       So, changes are:
       (1) P-40F is a flight.
       (2) One B-24 squadron becomes a PB4Y-1 flight.
       (3) Dropped the bomber doubling SSR.
       (4) Adjusted US Veterans up by 1 and Japanese Veterans down by
       1.
I'll ask someone else to give this a test.

There are no surface units listed on the scenario. The prior
playtest references a merchant ship being bombed. Did they get
accidentally removed with the latest correction?

Actually, the surface targets were missed on the scenario in the
first place, which is a major error on my part. I guess Gordon
and Andrew missed that because they were working from Gordon's
VASSAL rather than the paper set-up.
Good catch. I'll fix it with the next release.

Can you give me the location of all surface units? Was going to
       try playing it this weekend.

I may need to add a special rule that sets the Aux 1 as being
       dead in the water.

       Scenario: Valentine's Day Massacre.
       Version: 0.3.
       Playtester: Scott Spencer(solo).
Report: This was some of the most brutal dice rolling I have
seen. Both sides squandered opportunities. The top Japanese
sweep of 2 squadrons achieved a text book bounce on the lead
P-38 sweep flight. After two turns all 3 were broken for the
loss of one plane each. The Japanese were surprisingly brittle
and all 4 remaining squadrons broke without getting to attack
the bombers. The P-40 escort was able to abandon its escort
duties to pursue broken Japanese fighters. US bombing was
equally dreadful, rolling a 3 on both attempts.
       Victory: Japanese - 5 fighters shot down(4 P-38s and a P-40) for
5VP. US - 8 Zeros shot down, no bomb hits for 8VPs. Final -3
       American Victory. Perceived Victory: Draw.
Recommendations: None. I'm going to give this another go, but I
felt both sides had their chances and with some more normal
rolling the Japanese could have won.
