Third run through now complete. This time the Germans tried to
sneak the A-8s through the cloud & attack the rear bombers
whilst the D-9s & the Komets kept the lead US fighters
entertained. Nearly, but didn't ..quite work as one (split)
squadron of the lead Mustangs was able to get back & join the
action against the rear bombers. Dice swung both ways but
overall luck favoured no one.
Final outcome :
US 16 single engined fighters, all 4 Komets & 1 Me 262 killed, 1
bomber sqn broken & 2 disrupted.---> 60 (exit) + 22 kills
Germans 4 bombers & 4 fighters down---> 16 VP
Final score was +66 for what felt like a marginal US win.
There are certainly options for both sides. The Germans can try
& mass against one bomber box at the rear but I think it might
be equally effective to use the decent fighter against the lead
Mustangs & try & direct both Komets & the A-8s against the lead
box. Overall certainly has replay value & is interesting. The
Komets add an interesting dimension to it-they need to be in
there but this does show pretty well why they weren't really
much good (leaving aside their well known non operational
lethality...). It is bound to be volatile with a lot of high
firepower fighters which can cause many bomber kills if they get
in, even briefly without the Mustangs. Conversely with 75%
Veterans, gyros, bomber defence & the box bonus any attack on
the bombers opposed by Mustangs its going to be unpleasant for
the Germans.
I wonder if the victory threshold might be adjusted back a bit
in the Germans favour, maybe to +60 or more for an Allied win.
Its a bit of an educated guess & I think it will be a scenario
with volatile scoring given the lethality of the combatants but
+55 feels a bit low.
That apart I think we're happy with this one. We could happily
go back & play it some more to experiment with different
approaches for the Germans but time is ticking & I think that's
probably a mark of a good scenario rather than anything else.
Cheers
Gordon

Hi Lee,
Yes, we're okay with signing off on E10.
Obviously the experience of others hasn't been the same as ours
(that it was - and is still somewhat - pro-German) and that
seems to point to considerable variability, but as long as both
sides are able to get some wins that may indicate it is
sufficiently balanced. That second game of ours could have
gone either way if I, as the Germans, had not backed off and
taken the Draw - a "go for broke" German player might have taken
the chance, rolled really well, and won (but the more probable
outcome would have been a US victory).
Ciao,
Rick

I'll run the data at the weekend and see where it takes us on
the draw window.

I'm seeing a lot of volatility in the scenario, but this is
partly because of the high value of the B-17s. Interestingly,
the mean score for the scenario hovers consistently around the
50 mark, which is the bottom end of the current draw window.
Rather than shift the draw window, I shall keep the bottom
anchored on 50 VP and simply broaden the window so that a draw
is 50 to 59.5 VP.
This makes an American win a little harder, but with this
window, the current W/L/D scores for the Germans across all ten
tests is 4/3/3, which feels reasonably balanced to me.
