from 4 to 2. Maybe I should try it that way next?

I'm thinking the vicious flak is a bigger problem than the
German fighters now. Those IL-2:s have to face flak fires with a
+5 or +6 mod when on their attack run, and if they fail their
suppression, so will the Pe-2:s.

v0.4 modified with one less German veteran, split limit 2.
Player: Elias Nordling (Solo)
This time I tried steep angle bombing with the Pe 2:s instead of
rockets. I'm not doing that again. They had to climb to get into
position for that, and to avoid cohesion penalties in the broken
clouds they had to climb 2 altitudes, giving the German fighters
plenty of time to pound them. It didn't help that the Soviets
couldn't catch a break in bomber cohesion.
As mentioned, the flak is murderous as set up, and the IL2:s
totally failed to suppress it this time round, which meant that
it kept eating aircraft throughout the game. The bombing and
torpedoing of the ships went totally bust.
Soviets: Bombing 1, 11 fighters: 12
German: 5 IL2, 11 Pe2, 2 A-20, 8 Yak 9: 39
Total: -27 German victory
Felt like: Soviet complete disaster
Comment:
The obvious choice would be to tone down the German flak, but
the thing is, I like the fact that flak suppression is such an
important part of the game and I would hate to see the flak
reduced to a level where you could ignore it. The IL2s were
somewhat unlucky in their cohesion rolls, and I could hone their
attack run better. Also, I have an idea how to boost the flak
suppression further: How about making the Yaks escorting the IL
2:s strafers with rockets? Would that push history too far? It
would make it harder for the Germans to ignore them while going
for the bombers and give the Soviets another game choice as they
are needed both for flak suppression and defense of the bombers.
Anyway, the toning down of the German fighters certainly didn't
ruin their chances and should be kept. I'd like to try this
again, but first i'd like to hear your thoughts about arming the
forward two Yaks with rockets. Or perhaps giving the player the
choice for their mission?

The history is vague enough that we might be able to get away
with the strafers with rockets. Why not give it a go? It's a
nicely exotic touch.

I'm almost through the third game, and the Rocket Yaks gave a
bit too much punch so a tvird IL2 was going to be my suggestion
too.

So revert the rocket Yaks to escorts and add an additional IL-2M
in Q1? Give it a try.
