Andrew (LW) & I have tried this one. All seems to work well. The
mix of aircraft is interesting, the J22 is useful if not quite
first line at this point & the clever Swedish bombsights provide
an interesting novelty.
Final outcome:
Swedes: 9 hits on artillery +6 VP, 7 losses (3 to flak which
rolled well, compensating fro poor LW fighter rolls)
LW: 8 fighter losses.
Final score +7 for a draw, perhaps approaching Swedish win
territory which felt about right- the Swedes gave as good as
they got but didn't do a lot of damage to the ground targets;
only a little more & it would have felt like a convincing
Swedish win.
No major suggestions to make. Would be fun to play again &
experiment with flak suppression/ different tactics etc but
happy to sign off on it as it stands & move on to others which
may need a bit more attention
Cheers
Gordon

Great! I'm waiting on one more test and unless that throws up
major issues, I'm happy to mark this as 'done'. Best to move on.
I'd love a validation test of Schlachtflieger.

Scenario: Radda Danmark
Version: .04
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
Experte assigned to the Fw-190A8 squadron and the Bf-109K
squadron. The green squadron was the Bf-109G CAP sqn. Swedish
veteran squadron was the trailing B-1 sqn.
Fw-190A8s bounced the sweep squadron of J-22s (who never made
tally) in turn 4 and caused them to break. The broken squadron
was allowed to escape so that the FW-190s could try to attack
the Swedish bombers next turn. In turn 5 the Fw-190A sqn dropped
on the leading B-17s with a late reaction by the escorts. They
scored hits on both Swedish sqns and disrupted the bombers. The
J-22s pulled the F2-190A8s into a dogfight. The next turn the
dogfight moved down and to the left with the Swedes being
eliminated and the Germans breaking.
The Bf-109g flight did not tally until turn 6, when the B-17s
were basically right on top of him. He engaged the now
unescorted bombers causing a kill and disruption. He did not
pursue the B-17s down but instead tallied and engaged the
trailing B-18s doing no damage and breaking.
The B-17s bombed in turn 7. Direct fire flak caused the leading
sqn to break. The broken sqn bombed the artillery target (at
altitude 0 ) for 1 point of damage. The trailing B-17 squadron
attacked Flak A (taking one loss from flak) attempting to
suppress it but only causing 3 points of damage. The broken
squadron successfully escaped.
The Bf-109K flight tallied and attacked the leading B-18s in
turn 6 with a late reaction by the escorts. An initial kill was
scored on both the B-18s and J-22s. The fight continued into
Turn 7 with the bomber taking another kill and the J-22s
breaking and being allowed to escape. The 109Ks did pursue the
B-18s on their bombing run, scoring another kill but then
becoming broken.
The B-18s went after the same targets as the B-17s had attacked,
both bombing from Altitude 3 in Turns 8 and 9 respectively. The
bombers attacking the Artillery scored 2 more points of damage
(net of 3) and the attack on Flak A (in turn 8 ) scored 4 points
of damage (net 7).
The Fw-190Ds managed to get themselves into the wrong place and
were not able to attack any Swedish aircraft, esp with several
making good their escape rolls.
The scenario was really fun. It was interesting to play with
some of these up-gunned Luftwaffe squadrons vs the Swedes who
are flying more mid-war type of aircraft. The Fw-190A8s were
particularly devastating. I think I put the Luftwaffe experten
with the right squadrons as it really helped bump up the kills.
Not sure about my choice of targets, probably all of the bomber
squadrons should have gone after the Flak battery trying to
score Fatal damage and getting that x3 vp score. That’s as
seen after the fact.
Victory: German Aircraft Killed (Fw-190A8) x1= +1 vp
Bombing: Artillery Minor Damage (3 points): +2 vp,
Flak A Major damage (7 points): +3 vp
Swedish aircraft killed: B-17 x2,B-18 x3, J-22 x7= -12 vp!
Total: -6 vp German victory
Recommendations: i did not feel this was unbalanced, i think the
Luftwaffe earned the victory. The Bunker is not an attractive
target for bombing.

If you use glide bombing against the flak with the lead B17, it
can drop its bombs on turn 3, I think, with a hefty positive mod
thanks to the Swedish bomb sights. This will give them a good
chance to suppress the flak there and then, which will improve
the rest of the bombing result. There is no need for any of the
Swedish aircraft to bomb from altitude 0.

Thanks for the test, Scott.
With your test I think I’m going to call this scenario ‘done’
and sign it off.

It’s a bad habit of mine, dropping to altitude 0 with aircraft
that can do so...
I like the Glide Bombing idea... I might play this again soon
just for fun and I’ll try it out. My bombing rolls were not good
(one bomber rolled a snake eyes) so it’s doubtful that I would
have ended up actually suppressing it.

Another late playtest report from Gordon and I:
The LW had difficuties with tallying which allowed the Swedish
fighters to somewhat call the tune and keep the attacking hand.
When the LW did finally make contact with the Swedish bombers,
combat results were disappointing. One LW flight losing 3 out of
4 109s without scoring any kills.
The Swedish bombing was not spectacular only scoring 9 hits on
the artillery unit for 6VP.
Overall the final losses/scores were:
Swedes 5 J22 2 B17 losses
9 hits on artillery---> +6VP
LW 8 fighter losses
Swedes 8 + 6---> 14
LW 7
Nett +7---> Draw
This felt right, neither side did particularly well, Swedish
bombing rolls being on the low side and the LW seeming to not be
really trying (wonder why?) but the final result looks right in
terms of VP balance.

I know this one is signed off, but I had two more playthroughs
at a con, with Jonas Multing, who is fairly new to the game.
Besides being about Sweden, it is an excellent teaching scenario
because it has it all without being overwhelming.
In the first game, my Swedes had some bad luck with flak and
disrupted bombers, and rolled fairly average for bombing. The
Luftwaffe was on a roll, really beating up the Swedish bomber
force. The Swedes scored 14 points for bombing and 4 German
fighters, losing 13 assorted aircraft, mostly bombers. The end
result was a draw, but it sure felt like a German win because
they killed as many Swedish aircraft as they possibly could
while the Swedish bombing wasn't exceptional.
The secont playthrough saw my Germans being unable to hit a
thing. The Swedish bombing, accordingly, went without a hitch. 6
German fighters were lost to one Swedish fighter and one bomber.
The bombing scored 22 points, so the final Swedish score was 26.
The second result was obviously an outlier. But my feeling is
the better you learn the scenario and how to optimize the
Swedish bombing approach, the Swedish average bombing score goes
up considerably. I would call the 5 scored first a German win,
or at least the lowest threshold of a draw.

The outlier result does push the mean up somewhat, to around
4.25 VP, which is basically a draw under the current Victory
Conditions. But I'm guessing we need to expect the occasional
outlier on this.
