Speaking of nutters, if you wanted a war in 1949 It would just
take a tale with MacArthur winning the Presidency in 1948.

From 2009-2015, the moderator of the Silent War folder on CSW
ran a daily "The War 70 Ago" routine, posting entries about the
war in the Pacific (and what influenced it on other fronts). The
main thing I learnt then was how much of a pompous, egotistical,
full-of-air bastard MacArthur was -- or tried really, really
hard to look like one, if you want to give him the benefit of
the doubt.
To this day, I cringe every time I come across a biography
describing him as a "war master", "heroical leader of men",
"outstanding war leader", "genius strategist", ad nauseam...
If this project ever goes somewhere, I'd love to see him bungle
in the overall background, even if once.

MacArthur was in almost every respect an awful man. A poltroon
and bungler, as his handling of the Philippines showed.

A friend of mine write an excellent book called Fighting for
MacArthur about the Navy and Marines in the defense of the
Philippines, and you can pretty much see the steam coming out of
his ears when he talks about the man. I recently read Max
Hastings history of the Korean War and it's similarly horrifying
on that front.
The fact that there were a lot of people who wanted him to be
the president is staggering even in the current moment.
