Sweep missions

If an aircraft on sweep drops its tally against a broken
aircraft and then fails to tally an available aircraft, does it
move straight ahead in the movement phase?

That's how I play it. Unless it's alerted and on the same radio
net as someone else.

Right, then it moves toward that unit at the shortest route
possible. Thanks, Elias!

It has the choice of course. A third choice is to declare return
to base and use the leeway in altitude change to rope in a
target.

I’m looking at Rick’s feedback for the living rules and need
some answers on a question:
Rick suggests rearranging Sweep rule 9.2.3’s sections (a) to (e)
into a more logical order, with (a) Continue somewhere in the
middle, moved to (c). Would this affect any other rule or
scenario references anywhere else in the game?

Okay, can UNALERTED sweeps, when advanced bombing rules, begin
circling or do they have to become alerted before they can
circle? I was always of the understanding that sweeps can begin
circling whenever (since the spirit of the sweep rules as
defined in sidebar is that sweeps circle near bomb area which
would seem like they would do this alerted or not). However, I
think the rules lead people to believe that they must be alerted
to do so.
Below are the relevant rule sections in current ruleset:
9.2.3 Sweep
Fighters with a Sweep mission marker usually start play
unalerted [7.1].
Sweep squadrons fly to the far edge of the map and exit. They
move two
squares each turn, costing 2 MPs, without changing altitude,
turning, or
circling. A sweep squadron can also do the following:
So per this rules section, unalerted sweeps CANNOT circle (i
realize this is basic rules to be amended by advanced rules).
15.2.3 Sweep Missions
All normal sweep behaviours apply [9.2.3]. However, sweeps have
the
option of circling [8.3.1]. A squadron that starts circling
continues to
circle until it commences Pursuit, Support, Continue, Return to
Base, or
Form Up behaviour [9.2.3]. If the sweep is part of a wing, all
squadrons
in the wing circle together.
Okay so this would seem to indicate a change from basic rules,
but it doesn't mention alert status (again this SHOULD lead
someone to conclude that alert status not required).
However, I still got asked recently by an opponent that sweeps
who are unalerted cannot begin circling. I think the basic rules
that make it specific that they cannot circle warrant a
likewise clear indication in the advanced rules that they can
circle EVEN IF UNALERTED.
What do you think?

Why do you interpret this as applying to unalerted sweeps?
Surely in v2.2.1 rule 9.2.3 the sweep’s alert status is
immaterial? Indeed, the changes to 9.2.3 were made to remove all
alert references other than noting that fighters usually start
unalerted.
What's causing confusion here? I hate to think we made a change
only to make the rule more confusing.

Well it seems the train of thought is that if the sweep MUST
move forward 2 spaces each turn UNTIL it becomes alerted (and
the basic rules specifically state that it cannot circle) it
appears the "being alert" is what unlocks new opportunities for
the sweep squadrons.

Where does the current v2.2.1 rule say that? I concede the old
v2.2 rule says that, but in the latest edition we explicitly
edited the reference to 'becoming alerted' out.

Maybe I'm just so used to the old wording that I am assuming to
much. Never mind ;)
