On the other hand, the event that this reality and that threat
are the result of a definitive, perhaps unprecedented,
experience of pain – the death of the loved one – and that this
same event is the intimate key that the subject keeps to escape
from the inertia. Barthes uses three paradigmatic cases to
better explain himself to his audience. The first of them is
that of Rancé, a commander abbot portrayed by Chateaubriand in
Life of Ranc é , who upon finding his dead lover decides to
retire to the monastery of La Trappe. The second is that of
Proust: the death of his mother in 1905 is the delayed
biographical foundation – Barthes comments in the session of
March 10, 1979 – of In Search of Lost Time.

end of his life is the third case that
Barthes summons to argue the importance of the "asset of pain"
as an incentive to change his life: upon discovering himself
terminally ill, the singer-songwriter Belgian decides to abandon
music and embrace anonymity aboard a sailboat heading to the
Marquesas6. The late Barthes can be deciphered in one of these
       archetypal cases.

Discarding the acedia of monastic life and the trip to exotic
distance, Proust is the mirror of his own sentimental reality.
As for Proust the death of his mother, for Barthes the death of
Henriette Barthes in 1977 represented a mental devastation whose
only possibility of repair could be found in the belief in a new
beginning. And then the mention of the Divine Comedy at the
beginning of the seminar seems to be understood a little better.
If Barthes says he is in the "middle" of the road, if he is not
unaware that he finds himself facing the random imminence of a
last opportunity for transformation, it is because he is aware
that he has already exhausted all the outlets to go through
mourning. All exits except one: the novel7.
