Artificial intelligence is the science and technology of
creating intelligent machines and computer systems that have
capabilities traditionally associated with the human mind. The
developments of AI specialists are used in such areas as the
financial sector, market research, data analysis, heavy
industry, medicine, telecommunications, transport, entertainment
and computer games, music, creativity and many others. The
largest in Germany and one of the largest in the world
non-profit scientific institutes in the field of innovative
technologies is the German Research Center for Artificial
Intelligence (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche
Intelligenz, DFKI). It was founded in 1988 and today has
branches in the cities of Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Bremen
and Berlin. DFKI conducts research in many areas of modern
artificial intelligence: image and pattern recognition,
knowledge management, intelligent visualization and modeling,
speech and language technologies, intelligent user interfaces
and robotics.
