List of Chicken Diseases

---------------------------------------------------------
Four main types of chicken diseases are metabolic diseases,
nutritional diseases, infectious diseases and parasitic
diseases. These diseases affect the poultry industry and can be
avoided by properly sanitizing the environment chickens live in
and by feeding the chickens fresh food.
Fatty Liver Syndrome
Affecting hens by enlarging the hen's liver to cause the organ
to become soft and susceptible to damage, fatty liver syndrome
can cause death to a chicken by internal hemorrhaging. This
metabolic chicken disease can be caused by calcium deficiency or
high stress levels. Other causes of this disease can be related
to the feed ingredient quality in the daily diet of the chicken.
Avian Influenza
Avian influenza has a 100 percent mortality rate with infected
turkeys as well as chickens. Geese, ducks and swans usually
carry the virus to chickens the infected bird comes into contact
with. This deadly disease can quickly spread to all chickens in
the same roost.
Cage Layer Fatigue
When a chicken comes down with the cage layer fatigue disease,
the bird's bones will become soft, resulting in the chicken's
inability to stand or walk. Associated with osteoporosis, cage
layer fatigue usually affects caged laying hens. The chicken's
bones become brittle. This disease can be caused by a lack of
calcium in the chicken's system or by an inefficient diet.
Fowl Pox
Affecting all types of commercial poultry, including turkeys and
chickens, fowl pox is a slow-spreading virus. Characterized by
skin lesions that form over the chicken's beak and head area,
this disease's dry form can also cause large scabs to form in
the same area of the chicken. The wet form of this disease can
cause plaque build-up in a chicken's respiratory tract, but fowl
pox is not typically fatal.
