       David's Letter.
By: Fred Sheriff Date: May 30, 2012, 11:45 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I received an read David's letter yesterday - In my personal
view LONG OVERDUE - but at least it's done now so members know
       where they stand.
As many of you know it has long been a bone of contention of
mine - that the same people week after week - grab the same
tables at the front - One Person per table - { what happened to
the Seating Plan which was carefully worked out the first week
       of this year }
I was surprised when the person who was eventually given the job
of seating out the tables in accordance to the plan - was the
very person who was against it in the first place - maybe
that's why it did not last long ???
Over half of these people have NO INTEREST in what is being
presented from the front at all - they are talking to the person
next to them about what's on their Computer Screen / answering
E-mails / Surfing the Web anything except talking interest in
       the program !!!!
Meanwhile people who have come to listen and gain knowledge are
relegated to the back of the room - where they usually have to
balance their Laptop or Paper notebook on their knee - because
there is no table space left - cannot hear what is being said
due to the bad acoustics - made even worse by the number of
people all around the room talking to the person next to them -
and also by the fact - that despite having spent a lot of money
on GOOD Microphones - people will still ask questions without
using them ?? This means that we at the back have to try and
guess what the question was by the answer which is being given -
       difficult to do at times.
In fact my personal view is that for most of the first sessions
       - when people should be taking in the information being passed
on - for 90 % of the meetings there is really no reason why
Laptops should be open and running at all ??????
So come on and start having some consideration for others
instead of just your own personal comfort. As David has said
if you want to Download Films / Surf the Web / Answer your
e-mails - do it in the Bar area and free up seats and tables
for those who want to LEARN.

       Well said Fred.
My view is that part of the problem is that David is such a
helpful and pleasant person that the kind of organisation and
discipline that is required in controlling the activities of any
large gathering perhaps is lacking. All members present should
understand the effort that David and others put into running
this club, and the respect that should be given to them during
meetings, SHOULD be enough to enforce some reasonable behaviour
       from those present.
The internet speed available to the Club members is perfectly
adequate EXCEPT when most choose to be on-line and downloading
       at the same time.
Why not either ask for lap tops to be closed during
presentations or turn the router off.
I doubt that it would be considered fair to Rumores, who have
supported the Computer Club with the free venue for a number of
years, to consider another facility but a larger venue might be
the answer to crowded nature of current meetings.

I agree with most of what Fred has said, and if I have been
talking on occasion, I am sorry. However, with regards to the
same people sitting at the back, I arrive early with one or two
other people to help put out the tables, connecting cabbles etc.
(and put them away at the end of the day), so that I can get a
seat at the front. However I am happy to sit at the back if it
makes other people happy. I have suggested to people
individualy at the back of the room to come and sit at thd front
when there have been spare tables but they prefer to sit at the
back. It is their preference. I do however agree that people
should not be surfing the net, emailing etc. and I also agree
that it would be a good idea to ask every one to close their
computers and shut the lid at the beginning of a lesson, or even
switch off the internet, so that people have to listen to what
is being said, or go into the cafe. Lastly one of the micrphones
should be put at the back of the room.
I hope I am still welcome on Friday :) ;) lol. (sorry I dont
know how to get one of the faces onto the screen)
       Yvonne
