Shrink Pic. Technical Question Geoff ???
By: Fred Sheriff Date: May 3, 2012, 12:22 am
---------------------------------------------------------
As you may be aware I have used Shrink Pic for many years -
because it is so easy to use - and I like easy !!!!
But I have discovered during the last couple of weeks it has
stopped working on all the Forums { 6 } I subscribe to and I
don't know why ???? I have tried to put a photo on here with
the same result !
In the past I just selected the Photo - hit the button to attach
it to the post - and it was done - reduced to an acceptable size
- now nothing happens - except I get a message saying the Photo
is to big ?.
As usual because it is a Free Program there is no assistance
from the Company - onthegosoft.com - so I am at a loss.
It still functions OK when attaching to e-mails ?
I have un-installed the old version - and re-installed -only
to discover it is still the same version so that made no
difference - any suggestions ?
The suggestions from other forums were - use TinyPic or
Photobucket - but this means sending the photo to them -
reducing it to the size you want - copying the generated URL -
going back to the forum - pasting the Urls into the post -
it was much easier when One Click did all that ????
Frustrated Fred

I can't see why it would work with posts to forums. Whewn you
select a picture to put on a forum, you simply select the file,
then send it to the forum. I can't think why that would invoke
Shrinkpic, or what in that selection might make Shrinkpic
intervene. It's nothing like the sent or attach to email, where
I can see how Shrinkpic would intervene.
So - I just think what you describe in forum postings is what I
would expect - i.e. no intervention by Shrinkpic. Are you sure
you've used it like that before - or is it possible your
pictures were smaller before and the forum itself was able to
shrink them to size - and Shrinkpic was never intervening?

David,
You do not just select and send a photo to a forum - nearly all
of them have set size limits for photos - some a lot less
generous than what we have on here of 400 kb - most are 140kb
maximum - so nearly ALL photos have to be reduced in size.
Yes I have used Shrink Pic in the past to do this on all the
forums I used regularly - it is only just recently it has
stopped working and I do not know why ????
The forums DO NOT intervene in anyway - if the photo is larger
than their set size - you just get a message saying this - and
not only do you have to then try and reduce the photo some other
way - but you also have to re-do the complete post again - no
matter how long it was - because everything was refused not
just the photo.
Most frustrating ?????

Are you using Chrome - Shrinkpic says only IE, Firefox and
Opera. Also perhaps a recent update in the browser has broken
it?

David,
I have never used any other browser except Firefox for years -
Unfortunately if it is something to do with a Firefox update -
there is nothing that can be done ???
As these for the last two updates have been made automatic
updates by Mozilla - and as far as I am aware you cannot switch
the auto update OFF.

A related question to the above - which Geoff may have to answer
as the instigator of the Forum.
I have no problem in attaching a Photo - and as long as it is
within the limits { 512 } it will post.
But having selected a Photo by browsing for it - and placed it
in the attachment box - if I then change my mind on it - How do
I delete it before posting ???
I have not yet found that option ????

Fred, If you have hit the post button and the topic is live then
go back and browse for your topic, click MODIFY at the top right
of the posting and then un tick the box that show the attached
files (just above the Browse for files box).
If you have attached a file and NOT POSTED it, then just click
the CLEAR ATTACHMENT link next to the Browse button..
It made sense while i was writing this

Geoff,
Yes you are correct - If you have not tried to post - and you
realise the Photo is the Wrong one or to Big you can delete it
- The problem appears when you have posted - and the new screen
reopens to tell you your Photo was to big and therefore
un-acceptable - and there is a ' Back Button '.
When you click on this button - it takes you back to the post
waiting to be sent up again ? - the photo is still in the
attachment box - but this time there is NO remove option.
In this situation I have just clicked on Save and one of two
things have happened - The post is done without the Photo -
or the post just disappears completely ???

Just tried it with a 5Mb photo, after it was reported as being
too big i hit the back button/link, when i returned to the
posting page with the attachment it was still showing in the box
as you state but i can see the remove attachment link as normal.
lets have a look at your PC next time at the club.
Geoff
