Some brief notes from the SCANNING talk 3rd June 2016

       ---------------------------------------------------------
The Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) device driver
interface is supported on Windows ME and Windows XP systems. If
a WIA device driver is available for your scanner and you are
using Windows ME or Windows XP, it is recommended that you scan
using the WIA interface instead of installing the TWAIN driver.
       For win &, 8, 8.1, 10 the TWAIN driver/interface is fine.
The word TWAIN is not officially an acronym, but it is a
backronym. The official website notes that "the word TWAIN is
from Kipling's The Ballad of East and West — '...and never the
twain shall meet...' — reflecting the difficulty, at the time,
of connecting scanners and personal computers. It was up-cased
to TWAIN to make it more distinctive. This led people to believe
it was an acronym, and then to a contest to come up with an
expansion. None was selected, but the entry Technology Without
an Interesting Name continues to haunt the standard."

Here are some tips if you are scanning documents with optical
       character recognition (OCR) technology:
       •
       text.
       •
       •
       •
       the page.
       •
       •
       blotches.
       •
button on your keyboard) and then printed do not scan well with
       OCR.
       Troubleshooting
If the OCR technology cannot read the document, it may be
       because:
       •
blurry. Scan documents at a higher resolution, e.g., as a
gray-scale TIFF file with 600 DPI.
       •
       •
       scanned words.
       •
       letters run together.
       •
       incorrectly.
       •
       actual text!!!!!!!!!!!!
