Speech Recognition in Windows 7

Although this subject was covered fairly briefly during the
meeting on Friday the 20th it seemed to raise a lot of interest.
I have transferred the set up, and usage instructions to a PDF
Document and it is shown here as an attachment.
For those of you running the latest version, ie 2010, of MS
Office then there is also another small change that can be made
to the setting within Office that will allow the Speech
generated text (or any other text for that matter) to be read
back to you using the inbuilt text to Speech software.
Instructions,
Open Microsoft Word 2010, at the very top left of the screen,
above the TAB Headings FILE, HOME, INSERT etc , you will see a
few extra small icons.
This is called the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR
These are usually a small WORD Icon, a small floppy disc icon,
an UNDO icon (upward and left pointing arrow) and maybe a few
other items if you have made changes to your page layout.
At the right of these icons you will see what appears to be a
–(minus sign) with a small downward pointing black triangle
below it.
Click this and a drop down menu will appear.
From this menu select MORE COMMANDS.
A dialog box opens and on the left QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR will be
highlighted in yellow. Click the arrow next to POPULAR COMMANDS
and select ALL COMMANDS.
Roll down the list (it very long) and find SPEAK (everything is
in alphabetical order), click on SPEAK and it will be
highlighted in blue.
Click the word ADD which is to the right where you have selected
speak.
The speak command will now be added to the Quick access toolbar,
click OK in the bottom right and the dialog box will close.
To get the computer to read some text aloud….
Select your text by highlighting it, click the new icon that has
appeared in the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR, turn up the volume and
listen.

I have read the speech recognition but i dont have Microsoft
word 2010 (I have the 2007 version.)
I have completed the tutorial and every thing seeemed to be
working ok, and I was really excited, however when I logged out
of the tutorial and came to try the real thing nothing happened.
Can someone please advice me or should I wait till next Friday,

Yvonne, it would seem that having completed the tutorial you do
not have the speech recognition software turned on / running.
Click the START ORB (button), in the SEARCH box type "windows
speech recognition" without the quotes. WINDOWS SPEECH
RECOGNITION should be highlighted at the top of the start menu
box, click on it and you will see at the top of the screen an
icon like this.....

Click on the little icon of the microphone and the text should
change to LISTENING.
Let us know how you get on.
Second point re Office 2007 / 2010 is only listed here so as
those with the latest version can get text read back to them.
will cover this again at the club in the next week or two.

:) Thank you so much for your for your help in the speech
recognition it has worked fantastically and I am actually using
it now so instead of typing my thanks I am saying it. this is
really fun and I hope other members try and use it as well.
