--- Quote from: River Bellgrave link ---
       >
       > There was something about a Starbase.
       >
       > The flood of bipedal races, moving to and from their
destinations. Making friends, eating together, music,
entertainment. There was this flourish of life. This amazing
amalgamation of alien races from all the reaches of the galaxy.
Even now as she walked along the promenade dodging all the
people that walked to and from their destinations she found that
it just frankly felt like home. A great deal of her childhood
had been spent on Starbases when she and her parents weren't
jetsetting across the universe on their vacations. While a ship
always felt like home, this was like a vacation home.
       >
       > So many memories flooded her thoughts, as she stepped into the
cafe, and looked around at the patronage that sat in their
seats, all enjoying fare from all around the galaxy. Coffee was
a staple of her diet and she truly enjoyed trying different
coffee like drinks from other worlds as well. This place sold
tea, coffee, and other stimulating drinks. She stepped over to
the counter with it's black top that somehow shimmered from
underneath, almost like starlight, it was quite lovely, if she
had to say so. Beside the register was a large open case that
was protected by a contamination field filled with all sorts of
baked goods and delicious delicaies. She reached through the
field and grabbed herself a large blueberry muffin, and placed
it on the counter, a large Andorian woman, rather willowy and
       tall came up to her.
       >
       > "What can I get you today?" she asked.
       >
       > River's lovely black eyes shifted over to the massive and
indepth menu. She ordered herself a drink from Betazed.
Something her mother had always drank and the smell alone made
her feel close to the woman that had perished in the attack on
her ship. While the woman turned to make the drink for her,
River pulled a straw out of the small basket to the side and a
small collection of napkins. Paying of her purchase, she
collected her purchases and turned to find herself a plate.
Luckily for her, there was a table in front of the window that
looked out over the promenade itself.
       >
       > Sitting in her seat, she brushed her long dark hair behind her
ear. Crossing one leg over the other, she adjusted her
starfleet uniform. she was headed to a new ship, a new home,
and she was quiet excited about all of it. She had missed being
on a ship. And on this one she was destined to be the Chief of
Science, a long coveted position. She had always enjoyed
Science and she had always loved being a Science officer. There
was never anything else that truly made her tick. Carefully she
cut her muffin into four pieces and picked up one quarter of it.
Her long fivers holding it as she took her first bite, and let
her dark eyes look out the window. Soon, soon she would be on
her ship and she would quite enjoy it. New life, new friends,
new work. She was looking forward to the next leg of her
journey. Who knows, maybe even romance. she thought to herself
taking a sip of the Betazed drink on the table, warm and
       stimulating, and made just perfectly.
       >
       > Like her mother had done, she missed her mother, the woman had
died many years ago, but the pain still came and went from time
to time. There were ways that River liked to remember her
mother, and partaking in the drink in front of her, was one of
the biggest. Not to mention, the plantlife from Betazed that
she brought with her from her homeworld, a place she had only
visited a few times in her childhood. I should visit again, Dad
       has settled there now..
       >
       --- End Quote ---
David strolled casually along the promenade, his eyes were
peeled for his long time friend River. The place was alive with
activity and it was pleasing to see people getting along and
simply enjoying themselves. As long as they weren't fighting,
then there was no need for his services. The task of finding
one person in the midst of hundreds was difficult, not
impossible but certainly frustrating. He checked the
chronometer on his wrist and saw he was late, as he generally
       always was to meetings.
"Dammit." He said with a little frustration in his voice.
As if by magic or some deity, he noticed the coffee shop and
remembered River's passion for coffee. It was as good a place
as any to look, so on that he made his way, weaving through the
people going in varying directions. As he got closer he saw
her, a smile formed on his face and a sense of excitement
tingled throughout his body. They hadn't seen each other since
River had graduated and he'd stayed on Earth for the rest of his
medical studies. Her first assignment had seen her posted to
the USS Victory, they'd kept in touch by subspace messaging and
so on, but they hadn't physically seen each other for years.
Casually he entered the coffee house, as always he wondered why
it was called a coffee house, because it did a wide range of
beverages. He nodded to a Starfleet officer who was leaving, he
couldn't recall his name, but he knew he was part of the
stations engineering team. River was seated by a window, which
had a nice view of the promenade. Slowly he stepped up behind
her and looked over her shoulder.
"Still fuel yourself with coffee I see?"

       He was late.
Of course he was late, it was his chronic habit, really. She
wasn't unused to it, and truthfully she had no honest plan that
he was going to be there. She looked at her PADD where it sat
beside her on the small table. The time showed that he was
late, later by the minute of course, but she would wait until
she had to be somewhere. Which she didnt think was anywhere any
time soon. She still wasn't sure where she was being assigned.
But, she hoped that word would come soon. She had been
requested to come to the Starbase to meet with the Admiral, and
that didn't bother her in the least, though it made her a little
nervous about what kind of job he had wanted her for.
She crossed one leg over the other, and picked up the warm cup
feeling the warmth of the cup brushing against the skin of her
fingers. there was something about the warmth of a cup that
just relaxed her. She took a sip of the dark liquid held within
the cup. The bitter but sweet liquid slid over her tongue as
       she swallowed.
It was then her old friend decided to make his presence known.
She jumped slightly, at the sound of his familiar voice.
Luckily, she didn't spill the coffee on herself. She looked up
and a bright smile crossed her face. "David!" she said as she
put her coffee down. She stood up pushing the chair back she
stepped over to him and put her arms around him. Hugging him,
she smiled, inhaling his scent. One she hadn't gotten to enjoy
for years. She pulled back and looked up at him. Her eyes
       dancing with delight.
"It's been forever. My goodness." She sighed softly totally
lost within herself staring at him. He had barely changed, but
he was still just as good looking as ever. She finally came
back to herself and she smiled brightly, as she motioned to the
unused chair on the other side of the table she had been using.
"Come sit! I would love to catch up. I've been recalled to
Starbase pending new assignment so... I'm not sure where that's
going to be yet. But I heard it's a promotion down the line
somewhere, so I guess I just have to wait it out and see." she
smiled softly as she sat back down. "How have you been?"

David noticed that he'd slightly startled River, though he had
not intended to. She turned to face him and her face lit up
with happiness, as did his own at seeing her. She said his name
and stood up to move towards him. What followed was a mutual
hug, his arms crossed somewhere around her shoulder blades. It
was good to see her and to hold her again, she hadn't changed
even a little bit. When she pulled back and looked up at him,
the look of happiness in her eyes was very pleasing. Again he
was happy to see someone else smiling, but this time it because
of him and his smile because of her. Just how the universe
       should be!
"It's been forever. My goodness." She said and he nodded.
River gestured for him to take an empty seat at her table.
"Come sit! I would love to catch up. I've been recalled to
Starbase pending new assignment so... I'm not sure where that's
going to be yet. But I heard it's a promotion down the line
somewhere, so I guess I just have to wait it out and see."
David was all to happy to grab the seat and ease himself down
opposite her. He looked around to see if a waitress was
available and raised his hand to draw their attention. "How
       have you been?" She asked.
"Definitely we've got to catch up." He agreed and then listened
to her talking about her being called to the Starbase, though he
actual assignment was unknown at that point. It was a little
odd not to know, but since the wars end, nothing had gone
smoothly all the time. Hopefully soon enough things would
become stable and therefore settle everyone down. "I'm sure
they'll let you know in due time, they wouldn't want someone of
your talent hanging around." He looked towards her collar and
smiled. "You've made Lieutenant already, that's amazing, I
always knew you was a high flyer!" He sat back in his chair and
rested his right elbow on the chair back. "As for little old
me, I've been good. Graduated about two years back, a little
earlier than expected with the war going on and all." He
shrugged his shoulders. "Served on two ship since then and now
I'm here on a state of the art starbase, one of it's few medical
       officers."

He hugged her back, it was warm and strong and familiar. She
pulled back and sat back down. Taking her coffee in her hands
again. It was delicious and she was glad now that she even had
someone to share it with. She adjusted the collar of the
uniform that she was wearing while she waited for things to
happen. She had thought about putting herself in her casual
clothing but she had opted for her uniform instead. It was both
comfortable and practical and most of the time it got her out of
any issues. She found that many civilians were treated as
lesser and sometimes it was just flat easier for her to go in
uniform unless she was out with friends or trying to do
something without having to take Starfleet with her.
He said that someone would let her know and she gave a nod. She
honestly wasn't worried, she knew that it would happen. She had
already been recalled off her old ship, and she had no idea when
she would be called into a meeting with her new CO or someone
else, but she wasn't afraid of waiting. She knew that her next
journey would be just as exciting as her last and she was
actually quite looking forward to making new friends and maybe
even fall in love at some point.
He was shocked and surprised that she was a Lieutenant already,
and she smiled a bit of a blush. She knew, by his own uniform,
what rank he was, but he had graduated a little bit after her,
and she wasnt sure that she had done anything stellar to get
promoted early. She had just been herself. But then she had
always loved Starfleet and she wanted tomake sure that she was
the best she could be when it came to being an officer. "You're
a great officer yourself, so don't sell yourself short, and I
know that you'll be doing well here. It's a great thing to be
an officer on a starbase. Especially, medical. Everyone needs
you, and this place is hopping with people. I have no idea how
you handle that much work load but I'm glad that we got to run
       into each other."
"You have a girl around here somewhere? Surely someone has
captured your heart." she beamed with a grin, as she took a sip
of her coffee and rested her chin in her hands, elbows on the
table, as she waited for him.

The waitress he'd gestured to approached the table, as River sat
down and reacquainted her hands with her coffee cup. "I'll have
a green tea please." He said to the woman, who promptly smiled,
nodded and turned back towards the counter. David's eyes moved
back to River, it was exciting to be sat with her again,
something about being in her presence just filled him with joy.
He wondered about her physiology at a Betazoid and whether it
was something to do with her empathic abilities. Whatever it
       was felt good.
She nodded at his mention of someone being in touch at some
point, but blushed with a smile when he'd praised her for making
Lieutenant so soon. "You've done well in what,...three years?"
He asked smiling back and adjusting his head to keep his eyes on
hers. "I'm proud of you River, you should be proud too, I never
doubted you would go far." His attention moved briefly to see
if his drink was on the way yet, it wasn't but that didn't
matter in the least. He leaned forward and touched the back of
one of her hands. "Seriously." He added.
"You're a great officer yourself, so don't sell yourself short,
and I know that you'll be doing well here. It's a great thing to
be an officer on a starbase. Especially, medical. Everyone needs
you, and this place is hopping with people. I have no idea how
you handle that much work load but I'm glad that we got to run
into each other." River said making him blush and not just a
little. He withdrew his hand and looked around, he was worried
people would see him in that state and it would make him look
vulnerable. It was quite a task to look after such a large
amount of people, that was for certain.
"Well fortunately we don't have accidents every minute of the
day." He chuckled nodding towards one of the large windows,
that stood over the promenade and gave a view of the briar
patch. "Most ships have their own medical teams too, so we
could always call on them if we have to." David shrugged his
shoulders. "Besides some of them, the patients, go back to
their ships for treatment." He chuckled again and attempted to
mimic a gravely old man. "Guess they don't trust us old
frontier Doctors, now do they?" All the time he did the voice,
he pushed out his lips and was grinning.
"You have a girl around here somewhere? Surely someone has
captured your heart." Came the serious question from River,
with that infectious grin of hers over a coffee cup.
He sat back and rolled his eyes once, that was going to be a
very difficult question to answer. Sitting forward again he
placed his elbows on the table and interlocked his fingers.
"Well I..." He stopped and let out a sigh. "There was
this...but I was!" Again he stopped and looked to his right at
nothing in particular. "I haven't, I don't really have time."
That sounded lame and he knew it. "There was someone I liked,
still do in fact." Again he shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not
so sure about it you know, I think I like her....no I know I
like her I always did." His hands separated and one waved up
towards the promenade. "With all the turmoil in the fleet as it
is, would it be right to think of myself? How about you, I seem
to remember you being admired at the Academy, by many!" He said
making no suggestion that she was whorish or anything, it was a
fact she was beautiful and he'd seen plenty of Cadets swoon
after her. But David had never made any kind of approach, they
were the best of friends and that was something he didn't want
to lose by doing something stupid.
