There was something about a Starbase.
The flood of bipedal races, moving to and from their
destinations. Making friends, eating together, music,
entertainment. There was this flourish of life. This amazing
amalgamation of alien races from all the reaches of the galaxy.
Even now as she walked along the promenade dodging all the
people that walked to and from their destinations she found that
it just frankly felt like home. A great deal of her childhood
had been spent on Starbases when she and her parents weren't
jetsetting across the universe on their vacations. While a ship
always felt like home, this was like a vacation home.
So many memories flooded her thoughts, as she stepped into the
cafe, and looked around at the patronage that sat in their
seats, all enjoying fare from all around the galaxy. Coffee was
a staple of her diet and she truly enjoyed trying different
coffee like drinks from other worlds as well. This place sold
tea, coffee, and other stimulating drinks. She stepped over to
the counter with it's black top that somehow shimmered from
underneath, almost like starlight, it was quite lovely, if she
had to say so. Beside the register was a large open case that
was protected by a contamination field filled with all sorts of
baked goods and delicious delicaies. She reached through the
field and grabbed herself a large blueberry muffin, and placed
it on the counter, a large Andorian woman, rather willowy and
tall came up to her.
"What can I get you today?" she asked.
River's lovely black eyes shifted over to the massive and
indepth menu. She ordered herself a drink from Betazed.
Something her mother had always drank and the smell alone made
her feel close to the woman that had perished in the attack on
her ship. While the woman turned to make the drink for her,
River pulled a straw out of the small basket to the side and a
small collection of napkins. Paying of her purchase, she
collected her purchases and turned to find herself a plate.
Luckily for her, there was a table in front of the window that
looked out over the promenade itself.
Sitting in her seat, she brushed her long dark hair behind her
ear. Crossing one leg over the other, she adjusted her
starfleet uniform. she was headed to a new ship, a new home,
and she was quiet excited about all of it. She had missed being
on a ship. And on this one she was destined to be the Chief of
Science, a long coveted position. She had always enjoyed
Science and she had always loved being a Science officer. There
was never anything else that truly made her tick. Carefully she
cut her muffin into four pieces and picked up one quarter of it.
Her long fivers holding it as she took her first bite, and let
her dark eyes look out the window. Soon, soon she would be on
her ship and she would quite enjoy it. New life, new friends,
new work. She was looking forward to the next leg of her
journey. Who knows, maybe even romance. she thought to herself
taking a sip of the Betazed drink on the table, warm and
stimulating, and made just perfectly.
Like her mother had done, she missed her mother, the woman had
died many years ago, but the pain still came and went from time
to time. There were ways that River liked to remember her
mother, and partaking in the drink in front of her, was one of
the biggest. Not to mention, the plantlife from Betazed that
she brought with her from her homeworld, a place she had only
visited a few times in her childhood. I should visit again, Dad
has settled there now..
