Crash Landing - (Maria and JA)

Shuttle craft nine was down, its flight systems were offline
with no chance of them ever coming back. The cockpit and aft
compartment were filled with smoke, there was a gouge missing
from the starboard side of the shuttle and the outside world
could be seen. Anderson lifted his heads up from the controls
and looked around for his traveling companion.
"Lieutenant Dyson...are you..there?" He asked with a cough.

Raising her head from the ground, Maria coughed a couple of
times, trying to get air into her lungs rather than the smoke
she'd been breathing in.
"Yes sir, I'm here... Are you hurt?" She asked breathing heavily
and raising to her feet to approach the Captain. She felt what
was wet hair run down her face, but when she raised her hand to
move it, she got blood on her hand.

John rubbed his left temple and grimaced a little. "Just a bump
on the head I think." His attention moved across to the rip in
the hull, he arched his eyebrow. "Better than the shuttle I
suppose." Pushing himself to a stand the Captain moved to the
breach and looked out. They'd come down in a forest, the slight
breeze coming through the gap was fresh and pleasing. "I also
guess we're lucky we're in a breathable atmosphere."

"Lucky us indeed." She said picking up a tricorder off what used
to be the ground. Relieved that it still worked, Maria ran a
scan of the area around them, hoping to find something useful.

John moved to one of the compartment side seats in the aft
section, he checked the survival gear was in order. Happily it
was all fine, as it should be, one thing he would not stand for
was inefficiency on his ship or its support vessels. Standing up
the Captain moved to the boarding hatch at the back of the
shuttle, luckily the hull hadn't buckled around the frame and
allowed the ramp to fall. Anderson stepped out of the shuttle
and looked around the immediate surroundings. It was a typical
looking forest, not unlike the ones on Earth. At the back of the
ship, there was the obvious evidence of the shuttles tearing
through the tree tops and the succeeding impact and gouge in the
ground.
"I wonder what changed their behaviour towards us?" It was a
thought and question for debate. He was referring to the
Dizenian's, a race recently discovered at the far edge of the
Beta quadrant. They weren't up to the Federation/Starfleet
standards in technology, but they were space faring and could
achieve a fraction over warp three. The Churchill had come
across one of their military vessels, it was found to be in
distress following a breakdown of their propulsion systems. As a
thank you, the Captain was invited to visit one of the smaller
planets of the Dizenian system. Specifically some ruins that had
been discovered, which had thrown the common belief that the
planet had never been inhabited. It was a rare opportunity and
the Dizenian scientists had welcomed the help of Maria. Though
they insisted on the trip lasting only three days, at which
point they were very insistent that they leave.

"I wish I knew, I don't recall either of us saying anything, or
doing anything that would typically be seen as offensive... Then
again, what is typical when talking about newly discovered life
forms?" She informed and asked the Captain. "Sir, I'm not
picking anything up within distance of us." She added looking up
from the tricorder.
Maria was disappointed at the sudden change in behaviour by the
Dizenian's. She had much enjoyed working with the Scientists and
learning about their way of life.
"I recommend that we start walking sir and hope to find a better
form of protection for overnight... We could stay here, but we
have no idea what will be attracted by the crash. Plus, we have
no idea how the weather will change at night. I think it would
be safer than sticking around to find out." She finished turning
to the Captain.

John shrugged his shoulders at the question of typicality with
new lifeforms, he sure as hell didn't know the answer to that
one. His experience had all revolved around security, but
amazingly it'd never had much to do with diplomatic security. He
turned back to the Lieutenant and nodded at her suggestion.
"You're right we can't stay here, as you said somebody or
something will likely be looking for us."
It was logical to assume that, after all why shoot down the
shuttle and if the act was deliberate as it seems, then it was
equally logical to assume someone would come looking to see if
there task was complete. It was a distasteful practice, even
more so the fact that John himself had employed such tactics in
the past. It wasn't something he took pride in, but in war such
things were necessary.
Anderson pulled a backpack from the life compartment and passed
it to the Lieutenant, it came with a belt attached that held a
type two phaser. Anderson took an identical backpack and the
only phaser rifle in the compartment. As he got the rifle in
both hands, the Captain observed it for a long moment. "I
wonder." He said.

After putting the backpack on, Maria took out the phaser, making
sure it was on stun, and then putting it back in the pouch on
her belt.
"There seems to be some sort of cave, South West of here... That
might be a good place to check out, but it's one heck of a
walk." She said. The cave was only just registered within range
of her scan, but it was too far away to tell what was out there
any further, but it looked like the better of the two options.
"Alternatively, we can head North West because I'm detection
something and it is slightly closer than the cave... Either way,
hope your shoes are comfortable." She explained to the Captain
waiting for his decision.

Anderson secured his backpack and weapons. He looked towards the
Lieutenant and raised his eyebrows, he took a breath and smiled.
"Clearly Lieutenant I'll have to tell you about my past." He
said with a chuckle. Not many of his crew knew about his Alpha
Six days, but with how crews had come together after the war,
there hadn't been time to bond with newcomers. The only person
who knew about him and to whom he knew about was John Brown.
Then an uncomfortable thought struck him, what the hell was
Brown going to do when he realised that Dyson and himself hadn't
returned. After all the man had one hell of a powerful ship at
his fingertips and diplomacy wasn't one of his strengths.
"Lead the way Lieutenant."

Maria wasn't sure which way the Captain wanted to go, so she
decided to go South West, looking at her tricorder making sure
she was looking in the right direction before setting off.
"I know it's a bit further, but I think our best bet is to head
towards the cave." She informed the Captain as she stepped out
of the wrecked Shuttle. "Tell me about your past and I'll tell
you about mine... Well, anything you don't already know." She
said with a giggle, referring to him more than likely to have
already read her file.
She wasn't being nosy asking the Captain, it was just something
they could talk about to keep them occupied on the long walk
ahead of them. Maria had by no means forced the Captain to tell
her, as she knew about confidentiality.
