Ryan never knew his birth parents, all he knew was they worked
on civilian freighters and their names. He was rescued following
a Nausicaan attack on the ECS Jacksonville, upon being returned
to Earth it was found he had no family and was put into the
foster care system. From a very young age Ryan learned to look
out for himself and would be outdoors as much as possible.
At school Baker did reasonably well, finding that anything
sporting was what he liked to do best. But again he was a loner
and decided not to keep many friends. In all his life he felt
that people only pretended to care about him and school was no
different.
Eventually he come of age where he could sign up to Starfleet
and after passing the entrance exam he was in. The Academy was
good for Ryan, he made a few friends and had a pretty
comfortable time at the Academy. Though it wasn't all roses, he
drew a couple of demerits and was once reprimanded. However he
graduated with his class in 2372.
His first assignment was on board the USS Kingston, serving as
an Engineer.
In 2374 he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and
transferred to Starbase 17, that ended with his reduction in
rank to Ensign and forced transfer to the USS Endeavour.

Ryan entered with a couple of his fellow Engineers, though he
wasn't really in on whatever they were discussing. It was shift
change over time and like most days the oncoming shift tended to
bump into each other and therefore enter together.
Still bitter about his demotion, Baker was observing a padd he
carried. On it was information about the Merchant service,
something he was strongly considering applying for. The
reduction in rank had shattered his illusions of Starfleet, it
was a result of insubordination. That was after a difference of
opinion with one of his colleagues on Starbase 17, the hind end
of space and as far from trouble as anyone could find it. The
colleague happened to be the Nephew of an Admiral and was
completely wrong about a course of action to take with a
defective plasma coil. But of course the Chief Engineer and
Station C.O didn't want to get an ear full from the Admiral, so
it was decided that Ryan was wrong. So when the action, the
wrong action, was taken did chaos ensue. How nobody was injured
or killed was a miracle and that in turn cause Ryan to react
badly to the Chief. Next thing he knew, he was in front of the
Station Commander and losing his black pip.
