Observation Lounge
Oskin Alexander remained quiet as he observed the senior
officers and counted. Four, three, three, two and one. He
blinked. One?
The Operations Officer had figured he would be the lowest
ranking officer attending, seeing as how it was a senior staff
briefing. Waiting for the actual meeting to begin, he had
occupied himself by counting the rank pips of the officers
present and gauging his value at the table as such. While he had
been aware of Reava Deito's appointment as acting Chief Medical
Officer and he had also been aware of her presence on the bridge
when she had had a briefing with the Captain, Alexander had had
his back to them and had not noticed her rank insignia.
One pip? An Ensign? That could only mean Reava Deito was not a
Doctor of Medicine... well... no... she could have lost part of
her rank device somewhere and not be wearing her actual rank.
Still... no one else seemed to notice or point this out. Surely
the Chief Medical Officer of a Galaxy-class starship, if only
acting, had to be a licensed Doctor of Medicine? Alexander could
think of no Starfleet doctor he had ever met holding the rank of
Ensign, they were commissioned Lieutenants junior grade upon
graduating their eight year studies at Starfleet Medical Academy
or elsewhere.
Briefly, the Ensign considered pointing out to the Betazoid
woman that something was missing on her collar, but intimidated
by the gathering of seniority, he though the better of it and
looked away before anyone could accuse him of staring.
It did mess up his count, though. Right now, he constituted one
fourteenth of the experience converged here. It was impossible
to be more accurate than that without knowing the Chief Medical
Officer's actual rank.

Observation Lounge
Josh sat in his chair. He looked around the room. A smile came
across his face with his loyal crew. "Thank you all for coming.
First off I'd like everyone to meet everyone. Some people came
on board from the Endeavour. Commander Tekin Nevir, Lieutenant
John Harriman, filling in for our Science and Chief Tactical
respectively. We also have two new members although one is not a
department head in making him acting for right now until things
with Lieutenant Murray gets settled, and now with our acting
CMO, Ensign Reava Deito. She was all starbase 378 could afford
to send, but I've looked over her records and she held a
medical practice before joining Starfleet. So we're lucky to
have her on board. Seeing how this is a relatively diplomatic
mission I'm not expecting much trouble, but should the need
arise i have complete faith in her as i do in all of you. " Josh
said that last sentence looking around the table.
"Now on to our mission. We've been dispatched to Andoria. For
some reason they want to break off from the Federation. No one
knows why and they aren't really giving a reason except that
they are unhappy with how things have been handled as of late.
They agreed to a meeting but they did not want a Federation
diplomat cause they feel like they simply sit behind a desk all
day and only go to things when they are needed. They wanted a
starship captain thar has been out on the front lines doing the
things diplomats don't do. We are the closest ship and I've
been chosen with my battle with the Dominion."

was something specific he could do. He then said "Well if you
like, you can check the impulse manifolds. Make sure they are
still holding good after the Starbase filled them up. So you can
keep busy." He smiled and nodded.
>

"Thank you Commander," the junior engineer replied with a nod.
He moved casually to an un-occupied console and identified
himself to the LCARS. He recounted what the chief engineer had
said, about the impulse manifolds, and thought it unusual for
Starbase maintenance to use them as temporary storage. Perhaps
the knowledge acquired from his academy years had already been
superseded. If the severely underestimated Moore's Law was
anything to go by, then the rate at which 24th century
interstellar travel technology and innovation seemed to make
sense. Or... this was simply a design feature of the
Galaxy-class starships. Either way, it was what it was.
[hours later]
Ensign Kelvan was meticulous, both through by nature and through
training. Though his mother was one of the top robotics engineer
at the Daystrom Institute, he was particularly inspired by her
fellow colleague, Dr Saang. She was of average height, very
timid and typically heaved about a pair of thick-framed
spectacles on the bridge of her nose. It was almost comical.
Therefore, it always annoyed him when he had to revert to verbal
commands. Somehow, it felt the less competent method to get
things done.
"Computer," Kelvan said, followed by the usual chirp of
acknowledgement. "Please confirm parameterization of the impulse
manifolds condition monitoring protocols are valid."
"Working," came the reply. "Parameterization variables are
adequate and will result in a 63% efficiency."
Not good enough, the Vulcan thought. He picked up a PADD and
began doing some manual calculations.
15 minutes later, and he was still stuck. It wasn't that he
didn't know how to do it, but the lack of experience. Only
someone who has worked with the Atlantis impulse manifolds would
have the ability to develop a robust set of parameters to take
the efficiency up to the high eighty realm. Or, he could simply
let the computer figure it out.
"Computer," Kelvan said. "Can you optimize parameterization
variables?"
The computer chirped. "Please specify target."
"Impulse manifolds condition monitoring protocols."
"Working..." Then, several moments later, "Specified
optimization request will require approximately 1 hour to
complete. Do you still wish to proceed?"
"Yes," Kelvan replied.
"Acknowledge."
All there was to do now was to wait.

the warp core. The blue sequence of lights was somewhat
distracting him, the job he'd been assigned was to monitor the
fuel consumption and prepare a report for the Chief. But it was
a boring task and no doubt it was punishment, cruel and unusual
punishment. Losing his black pip was bad enough, but did they
have to keep rubbing his nose in it? Well it seemed so.
>

made look like time had slowed down, or was it going backwards?
Ryan couldn't tell anymore. Recently he'd been looking into
getting out of Starfleet and joining the merchant service or
possibly signing up on a freighter. Then as if fate had it in
for him too, the console chimed and told him the analysis was
lost and could not be recovered.

to himself.

Kelvan glanced sideways, diagonally across from where he stood.
He did not recognize the face. It was an uncharacteristic move,
but he thought that some basic level of social interaction might
benefit him individually. If anything, he could even learn
something from a fellow engineer. The Vulcan's eyes darted
around, and once satisfied there was no senior officer in the
immediate vicinity, he walked over and tapped Ensign Baker's
shoulder.
"Greetings," Kelvan said. "May I be of assistance?"

Ryan didn't turn to face the owner of the hand that tapped him
initially, instead he slapped his hand up the side of his
console. "Not unless you can get me two hours of my life back,
that's what I just wasted on this piece of crap." Baker spat
back.
After taking a breath, the Ensign turned around to see who'd
approached him. It was a Vulcan officer, of course Ryan didn't
know the man, nor did he care to get to know him or anybody for
that matter. He did however feel bad about unloading his anger
towards the Engineer, it wasn't his fault at all. Computer
glitches happened from time to time, or was it the higher ups
again making his life a misery. After another breath Baker stood
and offered his right hand. "Sorry, its been a long day." He
began. "Ryan Baker."

Jacob looked up as the Captain called for all senior officers to
report to the observation lounge. He nodded and walked over to
Lieutenant Kerrigan and said "That means me. You watch over
Engineering till I get back." The female engineer nodded and
walked around keeping everyone busy.
He then walked to his newest engineer Kelvan and nodded to him.
"Ensign, as you heard, I need to report to the Observation
Lounge. Lieutenant Kerrigan will be in charge till I return." He
pointed to the female engineer and nodded to the Ensign. "See
you later and help take care of Engineering till I return." He
sees another Ensign and nodded to him. "I'll see you later as
well Ensign and we can get acquainted." He then headed to the
turbolift in Engineering and stepped in. "Observation Lounge."
The doors closed and the lift began moving to his designated
deck.

The lift stopped at Jacob's deck and walked down the corridor
and into the door of the Lounge. He smiled seeing the Captain,
his wife and other senior officers and took a seat. "Hey
everyone." He was anxious to know what this meeting was gonna be
about.

Brooke had listened as the Captain welcomed their newest members
and introduced them to those in the room before explaining about
the mission they had been given. She decided to just observe for
the moment until the others had chance to digest the information
and ask any questions before she said or added anything. It
certainly would be a test with both new and old crew but she had
faith in everyone and knew that they would all come together to
plan the best course of action before they reached Andoria. When
she heard her husband's voice she looked over at him and
returned his smile "Your just in time Chief, the Captain has
just started ".

Ryan stood and observed the Vulcan Engineer for a moment,
noticing the refusal of a handshake. Did Ryan care about that,
nope he couldn't give two hoots. He quickly retracted his hand
and thumbed towards his console. "Like I said not unle..." The
Ensign was cut off mid-sentence, at the approach of another
Engineer, who's insignia logically identified him as the Chief
Engineer.

Ryan folded his arms as the Commander seemed to ignore him at
first and went straight to Kevlan. The eventual words from the
Chief left a lot to be desired, making the Ensign feel even more
like nobody had time for him. He was after all a demotee and
therefore an undesirable element. "Whatever you say...." Baker
waited deliberately for a couple of seconds to pass, before
adding. "Sir." At the end of his response.
Taking a breath he turned his sight back to Kevlan. "Any good
with computers? I think this one has some kind of glitch or its
frakked."

Observation Lounge
Due to the fact that Reava had not been accepted into Starfleet
Medical Academy but had been planning on entering after
graduating from Starfleet Academy she was an Ensign. Naturally
she would have loved to have gone to the Medical Academy but not
wanting to leave her future to chance Reava had also applied to
go to Starfleet Academy. The former had already accepted the 200
applicants but she was welcomed to join the following year while
the latter accepted her. Once she passed the exams Reava made it
a point to focus her studies on subjects that'd help her out to
get into Medical Academy. Then the war happened and the new
assignment as acting CMO on Atlantis.
Ranks did little to intimate her though she held each superior
officer in the proper regard.
The Betazoid female listened to the Captain explain their
mission after introducing the two Ensigns in the Observation
Lounge. So this was a mission to do some talking, find out any
information they could as to why the Andorians changed their
minds as the answer they gave was rather lacking. She was only
slightly concerned about how the Andorians would react to a
Betazoid, a person who could very well be seen as a probe but
surely the Andorians knew that all Betazoids were trained to use
their abilities properly.

"Frakked?" Ensign Kelvan said with an almost imperceptible tilt
of his head.
This Ryan Baker was becoming more and more intriguing as they
continued to interact. This human male reminded him of a former
freighter pilot from years ago, when Kelvan was exploring the
fringes of the alpha quadrant. Perhaps Ensign Baker would make a
fine candidate for Ensign Oskin and his 'domjot' wager.
