The young Operations Officer mulled on Kelvan's words as he took
note of the shot the latter had just placed.
One problem with Vulcans was that, give or take half a century,
it was nigh impossible to determine their age on sight. There
was no way to gauge Kelvan's skill at this game he claimed to be
unfamiliar with, or whether he was master of any other skills
that could be transfered to his advantage at this table.
"I see what you're saying," he said finally. Friendship forged
in the fray it was to be then. Alexander moved around in thought
and stepped half his body out of the doorway and into the
corridor and motioned Kelvan over. Still holding the cue stick,
he indicated down the corridor with his free hand at a
red-collared Ensign walking at some distance, "No subordinates
and no superiors. Do you agree to Ensign McQueen as referee?"

"I have no objections," said Kelvan. He pressed his free hand
against the small of his back and looked casually at Ensign
McQueen. "Ensign?"

Standing side by side next to Kelvan in the opened doorway to
their quarters, Alexander also motioned to draw Jackson
McQueen's attention to them.

"It is a shame," Kelvan said, "that Ensign McQueen could not
perform the role of umpire as required." He allowed Ensign
Oskin to be clear of the doorway before stepping inside himself.
"I suppose the table can stay," the Vulcan continued, "until
such a time when we can achieve a satisfying outcome to our
wager."

Alexander watched Ensign McQueen's back as the man walked on to
report for his duty shift. Slowly, he nodded at his Vulcan
roommate's words of compromise.
"I appreciate your deferment on the matter, Kelvan," he spoke as
they both walked back into their quarters. Arms akimbo, he
oversaw his handiwork and the cramped living space.
"In the meanwhile, perhaps we could design some sort of cover so
that it can be used as a functioning table when we aren't
playing..."
He bent to bring his face to the height of the rim and peered
across to the other side of the table with one eye, "How would
you rate your proficiency with forcefield mechanics, Kelvan?"

Kelvan arched an eyebrow, "I have a working knowledge on the
subject matter." He clasped his hands behind to observe.
