"Good afternoon!" Alexander smiled broadly, raising his cup of
tea to his roommate. Then he proudly gesticulated towards the
undeniable presence in the room. "Please tell me you've played
dom-jot at Starfleet Academy."

Kelvan frowned, the word 'dom-jot' eluded him. Judging from
Ensign Oskin's inference, it was something that he should have
come across during his time at the academy. However, he simply
could not remember. He was positive that he hadn't intentionally
repressed knowledge of this purported recreation device native
to the Bajorans.
"My apologies," Kelvan said. "I have not."

"You have not?" Alexander's eyebrows went up in disbelief. He
looked left to right to find a spot to put down his tea, the
dom-jot table probably not being the best place. Finally
settling on the edge of the bookshelf, he turned back to the
replicator.
"Computer, replicate one set of dom-jot balls and two cue
sticks," as he handed one of the cues to Kelvan, he began
alligning the balls on the table.
"You'll like this game... it all comes down to geometry.
Geometry and luck." He pondered for a way to sell the idea of
playing to the Vulcan in a better way, "It's very logical."

"I highly doubt it," Kelvan said. He was about to decline the
offer to partake, but seeing as how Ensign Oskin was already
invested in the idea, decided that it was worth exploring. If
anything, to convince himself that it was a waste of time.
The Vulcan accepted the cue, giving it a thorough examination,
and said, "what are the rules?"

Alexander explained the rules as best as he could. Placing the
different coloured balls on the table and illustrating a few of
his explanations by applying the cue.
As with most games, he concluded out loud, at one point, it
seemed best to learn more as they played a game.

Kelvan watched his roommate with interest, keenly observing
every action and nuance. The rules were simply enough that even
a novice would have a reasonable chance at success.
"Before I become a willing accomplice," Kelvan said as soon as
Ensign Oskin finished his turn, "I wish to know if this
recreation device will form a permanent fixture of our room. As
you can see," he gestured to his side, "my space entitlement has
been reduced by 20 percent."

Oskin Alexander's eyes darted from left to right across the
table after Kelvan had finished his comment.
"It took me quite a bit of time to get it set up like this," the
half-Bajoran, half-Human explained. "And..." he used his cue
stick to indicate, "as you can see, I have sacrificed far more
personal space in order to facilitate this really splendid
acquisition which," he raised his right index finger in
emphasis, "I am certain, will serve as a nexus for social
activity on this deck."
He leaned forward to make his own next move as he continued his
explanation. "Besides, have you been to Nine Lives?" Oskin
refered to the crew lounge located in the forward section of
deck 10. The place is either too crowded or too quiet. And no
room for features such as this dom-jot table." He finished his
move and scooted out of the way for Kelvan.

Kelvan suppressed the urge to feel annoyed. It wasn't enough
that Ensign Oskin had misappropriated his personal space, but he
was intending to invite other individuals to congregate. This
was... inconvenient.
"Ensign Oskin," the Vulcan said. "I would like to propose a
wager." He waited until his roommate had finished his move and
was upright before saying, "if I beat you in a game, you remove
the table."

"Now..." Alexander was not quite certain how to respond to that.
Kelvan did not seem to share the same enthousiasm for social
events. "Now... mister Kelvan, is this rejection of this
fantastic upgrade to our abode your idea of forging a fierce
friendship, as you put it yourself?"
The half-Bajoran, half-Human sighed. Kelvan had an underlying
point that was quite valid. Alexander had acted -in good faith,
though- but without consulting his roommate. The only honourable
way to proceed was to accept Kelvan's compromise to a solution
of which the result gave a fair chance to all parties involved.
Besides, Kelvan did not even know how to play dom-jot, or was he
bluffing? Was he feigning ignorance to gain glory through the
gimmick of deception?
"We'll need a referee," he concluded, implying his assent.

"Isn't conflict," Kelvan said, then deftly executing a difficult
'shot'. He straightened his form and continued, "a cornerstone
of friendship?"
He was going to raise the analogy of the phrase itself -- how
the hammer and anvil worked in concert, in direct opposition --
but thought it too condescending.
"I think," Kelvan said, "this wager will give us a fair
indication on how 'fierce' our friendship can become. Agreed?"
