Klaxons blared and the lighting on the bridge took on a red hue
as Lieutenant Rodgers ordered shields raised and weapons brought
online. At a single command from the commanding officer, as
relayed through the Lieutenant on the bridge, a thousand
officers and crew onboard USS Atlantis made preparations to
clear the ship for action.
From his console, Ensign Oskin Alexander oversaw the
reallocation of power to essential systems and was kept up to
date of several low level diagnostics that were being run while
weapons and shields were brought online. Several primary and
secondary backup generators for various systems were woken from
their slumber and brought to a hot standby. Isolation doors and
forcefields were closed throughout the ship to contain the
effects of possible hull breaches.
As the Captain walked onto the bridge, the half-Bajoran was
monitoring the outcome of an automated diagnostics of the
lifeboats and compensating for the loss of a primary EPS-conduit
on deck 35 that prevented the aft torpedo launcher from being
loaded. Moments later, damage control teams began reporting in
that they had assumed their combat stations.

weapons" Josh ordered. Waiting to see what the Windsor will do.

Alternating his attention between the USS Windsor on the main
viewer and overseeing resource allocation throughout the ship,
Ensign Oskin's heart beat heavily in his chest. The adrenaline
rush from a fist-to-fist fight was one thing. Being mere moments
away from a catastrophic hull breach that shreds the ship apart,
was quite another.

Deck 2
36. That was how many sonic showers he had diagnosed in the 2
hours since he started. The task was quite straightforward, the
only tedious aspect was to manually run the scanner across every
square centimeter of the surface area.
Ensign Kelvan was about to pick up the decoupler when he noticed
a loose sub-panel near the skirting. Normally, he would refrain
from prying, but this was within his scope of duties. If this
non-compliance were to affect the operation of the sonic shower,
leading to injury or death, then any inaction would constitute a
gross misconduct on his part. He looked around the room first,
trying to discern anything about the nature of the room - its
decor, out-of-place items - anything that could allow him some
insight into the occupant of the quarters. There were none.
Everything appeared routine.
Lieutenant Doe, Jane according to the crew manifest. Apart from
public records, there was again nothing remarkable about the
medical officer.
Kelvan squatted and began examining the panel with his
tricorder. Satisfied that it was safe, the Vulcan reached with
his fingers and pried it open. Inside, within a recess, was an
isolinear chip. A hidden message, Kelvan thought. He retrieved
the data storage device and held it up into the light, as if the
analogy of his actions would reveal more. He fondled the object
in his palm, wondering if he should access the information. On
one hand, if if was personal, Kelvan would simply ignore and
forget, a task quite easily achieved given his extensive mental
faculties. On the other, if the information was valuable, for
example if it pertained to the recent attempts to assassinate
the Captain, then having this 'up his sleeve' so to speak would
be of tremendous advantage.
To my beloved mother and father,
It has been almost 2 years since I last reached out, and I hope
that both of you are well. Things have been hectic on board the
Atlantis, where I have been serving for the past 6 months.
I have not made any friends, although this is not through the
lack of trying. I cannot be certain, but I believe my fellow
colleagues suspect that my swift rise through the ranks and my
attractiveness have not been a coincidence. I have used the
gifts bestowed upon me to advance my station just like how I was
taught. Just like how you taught me. My achievements and
accolades have been as much mine as they were yours.
When you get this message, you will know I have done everything
I can to solidify my position on the Atlantis and the empire.
Your daughter,
Jane.
Kelvan clutched the isolinear chip and weighed in. There were
too many questions, and had he enough time to find the answers?
He moved to conceal his actions. With his eidetic memory, it
wouldn't be difficult.
"Who the h*** are you?!" said a woman, her voice coming from the
door.
The Vulcan sprung about to meet the sudden intrusion.
"Lieutenant Doe," he said, recognizing her from her records.
Lt Doe's eyebrows furrowed, her mouth was agape. Her eyes
darted across the room, firstly to her bedside table, then her
wardrobe and finally to where Kelvan stood. She went wide-eyed
when she realized what the engineer was doing in her quarters.
Her hand reached down to her waist, where her phaser hung.
"Lieutenant!" Kelvan said quickly. "I have made copies."
The woman relaxed her arm, but her hand remained affixed to her
weapon. "Did the Captain put you up for this?"
What she said didn't necessarily mean that she was involved in
any plot to topple the Captain, or it was an indirect admission
of guilt. "I have no idea what you are talking about," Kelvan
said. He began looking around, seeing if there was anything he
could use to defend himself.
"Don't lie to me Vulcan," she scoffed. "I've been stabbed in
the back many times by your people, so sorry if I don't
immediately trust you."
"As far as you can throw, right?" Kelvan said.
"What?"
"You will trust me as far as you can throw me." Kelvan tucked
both hands behind his back.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"It's a colloquial reference," he said.
"Whatever," she said. "What are you going to do with it?"
"If you would kindly enlighten me as to what your reference
might be?"
"Damn it you f**king a**hole," she said, snarling. "Are you
playing games with me?"
"Judging from your earlier comment," Kelvan said, "I'm sure you
of all should know that my people do not play games."
"F**k you!" she said. "Cut the bullshit! My letter! What the
f**k are you going to do with my letter?"
"Honestly," he said. "I haven't decided."
There was a moment of silence as Lieutenant Jane Doe appeared to
consider the response. She moved very discreetly, half a step
at a time every 10 or more seconds, in Kelvan's direction. "I
see where this is going," she said eventually. "You want me,"
she said. "What is it you people do for sex? Fon Parr?"
"Pon farr," Kelvan replied.
"Yes, that" she said and began unzipping.
"Lieutenant," he said. "Vulcans do not respond sexually to
visual stimuli, at least not in the way human males do."
"Really?" she was halfway done, her hand paused as it reached
her waist.
Suddenly, the room dimmed into a red hue. Klaxxons started
blaring. With a flip of his wrist, Ensign Kelvan threw his
tricorder at the woman. He was already on ground, rolling when
a bright streak of deadly energy pierced a hole through his
calf. There was no time to rely on logic, he surmised that his
stunt was the reason for the Lieutenant's poor aim, and that she
was likely in the process of regrouping. He had 1-2 seconds
before she could fire again.
The tricorder had nearly missed her head, but caused her to lose
footing and eventuated in a stumble. She broke her fall against
the dining furniture. Lt Doe was back up instantly, and
automatically turned behind to aim but before she could thumb
down, her arm was caught mid-swing. She collapsed her weight,
snapping her hand forward and clenched the front fabric of his
uniform. As she fell, her feet moved in between herself and the
Vulcan.
Kelvan was going for her neck, and had not anticipated the
woman's quick reflexes. By the time he realized his err in
judgment, he was already flying forward into the bulkhead.
Both were now on the floor. The phaser had been discarded and
had tumbled across the room. Both Kelvan and Lt Doe could
discern accurately where the weapon had landed. They lunged at
the same direction. A struggle ensued, the woman somehow able
to stave off the stronger Vulcan. Another bright flash and the
melee stopped.
Kelvan pushed the woman's body off and got up. He looked down
and wondered how he was going to explain.

The Atlantis drew closer and closer to the Windsor. Both sheilds
was still up, the Atlantis had its phasers and torpedoes ready
but the Windsor did not. Josh sat in his chair with his elbow
on the chair and his hand brought up to his chin. He began
tapping his chin with his finger. "Why is she just sitting
there....helm full stop, ensign Alexander scan for life forms.

Ensign Oskin perked up after half a second's delay. "Aye,
Captain, scanning for lifeforms." After tapping into the
designated clusters of quark resonance scanners, the young
Operations Officer initialised the lifeform analysis software.
He frowned at the results and keyed in a sequence of commands to
boost power to that particular set of scanners and
cross-referenced the returned data with chemical analysis
sensors.
"Captain," he tilted his head slightly sideways to address his
commanding officer but kept his eyes at his console, "something
about the Windsor's shields is interfering with our sensors. I
cannot single out any lifesigns."
With his left hand, he scrolled through several screens of
various related and unrelated sensor readings. He tapped past
sensor readings fed to his console from the tactical sensors and
quickly tapped back to have a closer look at it. Isolating what
little information was gathered on the USS Windsor's energy
signature, he fed it through several algorithms. The results
were relavant enough to inform the commanding officer.
"Captain," Alexander spoke up again, "I cannot confirm this with
absolute certainty, however analysis of the Windsor's power
signature suggests that its life support systems are offline."

Josh finally got up from the command chair. "No life support."
Josh said out loud. "Could they have abandoned her cause they
knew we was looking for her?" Josh turned to Brooke. "Commander
prepare an away team consisting of Engineers, security and
science crewmembers. We're going to try to take command of her.
" Josh walked over to ensign Alexander. "Ensign try to find a
way through their shields. They must reset at some point which
could give us an opportunity to find a way in. Just make sure
how frequent and the duration."

Immediately, the young Ensign brought up a visual of the USS
Windsor on his console and instructed the computer to magnify
and enhance various parts along the saucer section and the
secondary hull. Studying the results, he looked up at the
Captain as the man approached and spoke again.

Oskin nodded. First however, he check-up on his visual
inspection of the USS Windsor, "The ship does not appear to be
missing any escape pods, Captain. If they abandoned ship, they
must have done so with transporters or shuttles."
Again the half-Bajoran ran his thumb along his chin and pondered
how to proceed. Bringing up a schematic of the Nova-class
starship, he began by identifying the graviton-polarity source
generators that held the deflector shields up. If he could
somehow isolate and measure the subspace field distortion output
from those generators, he might just be able to determine the
cycle in their operating frequencies.

Ensign Oskin listened with half an ear to what the Ensign to his
right was saying. Though he was not part of the Security
department onboard, the apparent Human did have a valid point,
it was quite plausible that an ambush had been prepared onboard
the Windsor.
Returning his attention to the problem of defeating their
opponent's deflector shield, or at least long enough to push
through a five second transporter cycle. Five seconds seemed
like an eternity to Alexander as he considered what was at
stake. The thought of the matter stream getting caught in the
reinitialising of the the Windsor's shields horrified him.
Though he did entertain the thought that Ensign Riggs could very
well be part of the away team.
He frowned again at the lack of readings from USS Windsor. He
needed to find a way to force the diminutive Nova-class starship
to reveal more.
"Captain," he wondered out loud, "would it possible to have our
phasers tap the Windsor on its deflector shields here," he
indicated at a location near one of the shield generators facing
ISS Atlantis. At no more than 5% power?"

Josh turned back towards Oskin. "Good suggestion ensign,
transfer phaser control to your station. Once you determine the
modulation you will then immediately take out the shield
generator. Keep a close eye on it, unless they completely
redesigned the entire ship the shield generator is very close to
their main reactor, make it a very narrow beam and then fire
when ready." Josh then sat back in his chair and waited.
