"Aye, Captain," Ensign Oskin held his right arm bent and his
elbow against his ribs as he tapped his mouth with his index
finger in thought.
The loss of 12.75 billion gigawatts of power, missing from the
sabotaged warp core, was not easily compensated for. The fingers
of his left hand danced across the console as he brought up
lists upon lists of essential systems and cross referenced that
with a prioritized listing of running systems. Auxiliary power
generated by the Atlantis' impulse drive was already being
stretched beyond the limit of what was advisable in the long
term... every watt of power was in demand by every department.
Obviously, there was no way to safely generate more power, the
only recourse was to reduce demand and reallocate that to
long-range sensors.
The Bajoran Operations Officer went through several screens of
power allocations, tagging those that could be considered to run
on reduced or perhaps even no power for a while. His left eye
twinkled as he spotted the authorization for power being
diverted to the ship's gymnasium. Ensign Riggs and his cronies
were probably preparing themselves for their next engagement
with Ensign Oskin.
Alexander did not even take a single breath to consider. He
completely cut power to the gymnasium, equipment, replicators,
lights, even the power used to operate the doorways, and reduced
life support to the gymnasium to the absolute minimum. Whatever
power it saved was insignificant compared to his decision to
vacate all of deck 19, where the crew quarters of enlisted
personnel were located.
Slowly, but confidently, Alexander lowered his right hand and
tapped to engage long-range sensors: wide- and narrow-angle EM
scanners came online first, several imaging arrays next, then
the gravitmetric distortion scanner and subspace sensors, ...
One by one most of the major long-range sensor systems booted up
and commenced gathering data.
"Power restored to long-range sensors, Captain, it will take a
few minutes for them to complete their booting cycles so we can
begin to analyse incoming data," Ensign Oskin announced.
Alexander glanced down at his left-hand side where new requests
for power were being made, frantically so from the ship's
gymnasium. With some satisfaction, he tapped to ignore said
requests repeatedly.

Jacob heard Joshua call for him and just like that, he
reinitialized the dilithium crystal chamber and restart the warp
core. It was a pain but at least the damage wasn't severe. He
watched as the core glowed as the matter and antimatter began
combining together and the core hummed. He chuckled and hit his
comm badge. =/\= Edwards to Bridge. Good timing that you asked
Captain cause... we now have warp drive. You can go to warp at
your discretion.=/\=

The power management section of the Operations console lit up as
the reactivation of the warp core restored main power. Seeing no
further reason to deny requests for power to the various
sections of the ship, Ensin Oskin lifted the restrictions he had
imposed on power distribution to all systems. All requests were
immediately granted, but one. With a brief sequence of commands,
Alexander routed power for the ship's gymnasium through several
feedback loops in the EPS distribution manifold, estimating it
would take just about a quarter of an hour before Ensign Riggs
and his gang of Mugatos were released from their predicament.
Just at that moment, the ship's computer reported that incoming
data from the long-range sensors had been compiled and was ready
for review.
"There's something on long-range sensors, Captain," Ensign Oskin
spoke out.

Josh waited for the response from his chief engineer. When he
heard that warp drive has been restored he let out a grin. "Mr.
Edwards your timing is wonderful. Helm set course.." Josh was
interrupted by ensign Alexander informing him of a vessel.
"Helm set course for that location and engage at warp 6." Josh
stood up as the Atlantis finally went into warp. He walked over
to ensign Alexander and put his hand on the back of his chair.
"Can you identify the ship ensign?" Josh asked with a low tone
of voice.

At the Captain's command the Operations Officer glanced sideways
at red-collared Ensign to his right. He keyed instructions to
transfer telemetry on the location of the long-range contact to
the helm. An instant later, he felt the pressure on the back of
his seat and jerked his head to look. Alexander suppressed his
initial concern over another ambush as he saw that his
commanding officer had approached. It took him half a second to
refocus his mind at the Captain's request.
"Not yet, Captain," he reported, "It is still just beyond range
for more details. We are unable to identify it yet. The Science
department is reviewing the sensor readings to see if they can
make something of it."

Crew Quarters
I was aroused by a commotion coming from outside the room. I
opened my eyes and planted my feet on the floor and noticed that
my room mate, Ensign Carver was huddling in the corner. I
hadn't noticed the young human male, disregarding the flurry of
activity due to my meditation. It appeared he was trembling.
He looked at me, the whites of his eyes blaringly obvious. I
was about to walk over when the doors parted to reveal a
security detachment. I kept silent and awaited as the trio of
gold collars filled the space.
"Pointy ear!" one of the men barked in my direction.
I looked at him non-threateningly, at least that was the
intention. Unfortunately, Lt Singh assumed otherwise and found
my face with the end of his rifle.
"He looked me wrong," Singh said. "The young people these days,
no respect at all for their elders." One of his cohorts jeered,
"Filthy Vulcans, always think they are better!"
Initially, I made no effort to acknowledge the pain. But that
would likely have provoked them further. I reached for my
cheekbone and gave it a rub.
"I beg your pardon Lieutenant," I said as submissively as I
could muster. "I-"
"Whatever greenie!" Singh interjected and walked past me,
straight to Carver. The other security officer, closest to me,
simply shoved past me. I consciously deflected, not wanting to
incur the irk of these simpletons.
"Please Lieutenant," Carver said on his knees. "All I did was
join the meeting! Lieutenant McBride said that Commander Wyman
had an important mission and wanted volunteers!"
I observed with a certain displeasure, already deducing that no
matter what the Ensign had to say, or how hard he begged, he had
already been sentenced. Guilty by association, apparently. I
had been meticulous about my dealings with the crew. I carried
out my duties unwaveringly, limited my socializing and always
stayed ahead. Something which I have not been able to do since
my re-assignment. I knew no one, at least not yet. But soon, I
will need to identify the 'talker' of this crew. The one who
knew something about everything. By keeping my ears on the
pulse so to speak, I could almost predict the turn of events
even without logical deductions.
"I beg you Lieutenant!" Carver said. He suddenly reached
beneath his mattress.
"Weapon!!" one of Singh's men cried out.
A bright flash ensued and Ensign Carver was dead. There was a
brief interlude of deafening silence as each of the three thugs
reacted in surprise. I sent my mind into over-drive, I needed
to pre-empt how this murder was going to implicate me. I saw no
solution.
"Pointy," Singh finally said.
"Lieutenant," I replied.
"What happened tonight," he said. Both of his men flanked him
on either side. Weapons ready.
"Was an accident," I said. "Ensign Carver had a weapon, you
dealt with the 'treacherous scum'." I flinched inwardly at the
lingo. A poor choice by any standards, surely.
"I don't trust him," said the one on the left.
"Yeah," the one on the right chimed. "Vulcans can't be trusted!
They don't even bleed red!" He raised his weapon at my head.
"Shut up!" Singh said. He looked at me, sneering. "So pointy,"
he said to me. "I want you to convince me why I shouldn't just
claim that you were in league with Mr Carver, and shoot you in
the head right now."
"Of course," I said. I panicked. It was unlike any emotional
state I have ever encountered. I was at a blank. As fast as I
could reason, infer or deduce, I simply could not arrive at a
plausible reason to stave off my untimely demise. I haven't
even reported for my first shift yet. It seemed a tragic waste,
to have survived the academy unscathed, only to be killed as
part of a murder cover-up. Guilty by association. No, I will
not allow myself to die like this. There is no dignity. If I
cannot reason my way out of this, I will have to resort to
creativity. "I am a personal friend of the Captain's."
Singh was stunned, to say the least. It was a ****, an
extremely hazardous one.
"A personal friend huh?" he said.
I couldn't decipher his lack of emotional display. In any case,
I made my peace with myself. Surrendering my fate. It was
illogical to do otherwise.
"While I find that hard to believe," he said. "I will let you
live. Like you said, Ensign Carver had a weapon."
"It is your prerogative Lieutenant, to believe me or not," I
said. "Please feel free to confirm this fact with the Captain,
whom I am sure would indulge your questioning willingly without
reservation." I raised my head in defiance and stared at Singh,
who had assaulted me earlier. The terror, while fleeting, was
obvious to the trained eye. He was visibly unnerved by my
response, and will no doubt put into motion a series of events
that would force an eventual outcome.
The Lieutenant approached me and stuck his nose into mine.
"Remove the body!" he barked. With a final glance my way, he
stormed out the room.
I watched as Ensign Carver's body was unceremoniously dragged
out. Once they were gone, I relaxed my posture and sat down in
contemplation. It would seem that I have just bought myself
time, or have I just delayed the inevitable? Also, I wondered,
who will my next room mate be? Perhaps someone other than
human.
Bridge (hours later)

I walked onto the bridge and noted the second officer on her way
out. I was about to salute, but seeing as how the LtCmdr was
pre-occupied, decided my intention moot. I remained
inconspicuous, observing the interactions among the bridge crew
and quietly awaiting an opportunity to be noticed by the
Captain.
(Captain, hope you don't mind the unorthodox first post... I
wanted to blend in. Cheers!)

Josh looked at the ensign that just stepped off the turbo lift.
"Ensign shouldn't you be in engineering?" Josh asked with a
puzzled look on his face. Could this be a second attempt? he

Encouraged by his commanding officer's compliment, the young
Ensign continued along the lines he had been working at. The
data-stream from the long-range sensors to the Science
department was a fairly automated business. There was not much
for him to do but to return to overseeing power management
levels until Science reported any findings, though they were
entirely in their right to report any good news to the Captain
themselves. It was standard, albeit officious, operating
procedure within the Imperial Starfleet to claim credit for
anything you could claim credit for yourself in the constant
pursuit of favour and advancement.

Ensign Oskin took note of the ship going to warp on his
operations console as power levels soared and the consumation of
power by the warp drive necessitated adjustments. On a different
note, with the ship having gone to warp, closing the distance
between itself and the long-range contact, the unidentified
vessel would shortly find itself a mystery no longer.

Brig
Brooke entered the Brig and looked around spotting two Security
Ensigns sat at the main console quietly chattering amongst
themselves. She decided not to announce her arrival and walked
up to them, testing them to see if they had noticed. After a few
moments the youngest one of the two turned and sputtered when
she saw her. Brooke glared at the pair " I hope this isn't a
regular thing not when there is work to be done and traitors to
punish " she said angrily as she moved closer. " Do not let me
catch you talking again or you will face my wrath understood".
Both Ensigns nodded and Brooke saw the fear in their eyes,
satisfied she turned her attention to those in the cells. "Ah
yes now to deal with you all " she said gleefully as she
observed the ten that had already been brought here " It won't
be long before we capture the others then you all will suffer ".
Brooke then tapped her commbadge =/\= Commander Edwards to
Bridge, Captain we have ten of the traitors in the Brig so far,
the others should be captured soon =/\=
