after all, how could I talk about something like that to other
people." She sighed and paused for a moment then continued. "The
Triumph was my responsibility as the tactical officer to keep
everyone from harm. How did that end? Some of the crew died on
the ship as it blew up and completely destroyed me for a few
months. I awaited assignment and got put here, with a promotion
to lieutenant commander. I shouldn't have been a lieutenant
commander let alone a commander." She finished.

"You have the advantage, or perhaps disadvantage - depending on
how you look at it - of having a somewhat bluntly honest ship's
counselor," said Elihu as he sat down on the table. "Take it
however you see fit." He deliberately crossed his arms over his
chest.
This posture was designed to appear harmless and friendly, while
at the same time give off an intentional air of defensiveness of
his own, mixed with just a tad of self-confidence and
self-righteousness. Basically, he was going to give it to her
straight.
"Two things... ships blow up sometimes. I met a captain who had
three ships, the Molly, the Sally, and the Molly from a parallel
universe. You'd think after two of her commands crashed into a
planet or had a warp core breach, she'd be able to hold on to
the last one, but nope... Starfleet put her on a starbase where
none of those things could possibly happen." He squinted and
looked down thoughtfully. "Although there was that one time a
rogue planet had been thrown out of orbit 'round its sun and
came flying at the starbase." Elihu looked at Wyman again,
smiling. "Some thought it was proof she was cursed."
Elihu sighed. "Now comes the hard part: telling someone that
things happen that you cannot control, well, that's normal and
generally people already know that. But..." The counselor
cleared his throat and stiffened his stance, solidifying his
folded arms. "...you are right about your promotion. This is not
an indictment of you as a person. You're great. But the human
brain's decision-making ability - ya know, the frontal lobe -
does not fully develop until mid-twenties, sometimes not until
28 or 30. So no, I do not believe you should be first officer of
this ship. But like I said, don't feel bad. For someone so
young, you have remarkable potential, but there will be times -
due to your youth - when you simply cannot make a decision, or
you make the wrong one. And on those occasions, rare as they may
be, I will probably step in, and I ask that you back me on those
occasions, Commander."
Standing up, Elihu relaxed his posture and lowered his arms
beside him. He smiled warmly, once again projecting that same
caring and trustworthy feeling.

Briefing Room
Kira took in everything that Eli had to say and looked at him
blankly. "You know, when they asked me to become a lieutenant
commander I argued it. I told them I wasn't ready but oh no,
we've never seen an officer finer in the fleet they would say."
She paused for a moment and then continued. "What a mistake that
was." She couldn't help but smile a little then look up to him.
"If you can help advise me in any way of appreciate it.
Obviously when you're busy, you're busy and I can go and do my
own thing. I still know enough to do the job. Hell, I've been in
for four years. I mean I'm sure you've had longer but it seems
like a long time to me, I think the war made me feel older." She
sighed and then stood up and looked around the room for a final
time. "We'll be arriving in the next few hours so I should
finalise things which need finalising. I have reports to finish
and should probably check over the crew."

Eli nodded in response and patted her arm. "Very well,
Commander. And look, please come to me if you need to get
something off your chest, or if you just want to talk about your
past. That's what I'm here for, and unlikely most medical
professionals, no threat - whether it be that of an admiral to
throw me in the stockades, or an enemy interrogator to take my
life - will ever force me to break my doctor-patient
confidentiality." He tapped the side of his head with a
forefinger. "Plus I can block stuff out."
He headed toward the exit, and then waited for Wyman, gesturing
to the door with an open hand and a smile. "I look forward to
serving."

4 hours later...
Josh was on the bridge, sitting in his chair when the current
helm officer spoke up. "Sir approaching Hawking Colony."
Josh sat up more in his chair. "Slow to one half impulse." The
Atlantis slowed to the speed the captain ordered. "What's our
senors picking up? "

Brooke and her team had been running the sensors for several
hours now and so far nothing of interest or concern had showed
up on them when they had analysed all of the data. It was a
little frustrating that they hadn't found anything no ships etc
given the nature of their mission but that didn't mean that
wouldn't change as they approached the colony. At that
particular moment she had been going through the newest stream
of data and turned to face the Captain to report their latest
information " Sensors are showing that there are no other ships
in the vicinity of the colony, as for the colony itself I'm
picking up a number of lifesigns all clustered together on the
main continent ".

Josh looked over at Commander Edwards. "How many lifesigns are
you detecting?"

Brooke looked back at the data for a moment before answering "
Two hundred Captain, if there are more than that then we aren't
picking them up, I'll have the exact location momentarily" she
replied.

Josh looked over at Commander Wyman. "Prepare your away team
commander. Keep the channel open and we'll monitor your
location so there's no suprises. We'll keep a transporter lock
on you and beam you up when you get overwhelmed."

Elihu turned to Shepard. "I'd like to be a part of this away

Bridge
Josh listened to lieutenant M'Konel. "Agreed. I'm sure they'll
need you to help keep everyone calm. We need some answers as to
who did this and why. This colony doesn't have any strategic
value, it's mostly farm land. That is at least what we last
heard."
