2014 690 Enduro R -- First Impressions

I finally got my clutches on my brand new 2014 690 Enduro R!

I rode my 30-mile commute along I-10 into work tonight.

My first impression is that the bike is very quiet. When I open
the throttle a bit, there's a bit of bark, but I don't wanna
open the throttle too much during break-in. If you like a
thumping dirt sound, you may be interested in and Akropovic or
Wings pipe.
My first riding issue was how difficult it was to shift into
second gear. It shifter was so stiff that it took three tries!
I suppose it was just a matter of lubrication working through
the gears; after running up and down the gears several times it
eased up considerably.
Also, the ABS lights up, and stays lit up, until I put the bike
in gear and move a bit. I consulted the owner's manual and
found this is normal.
Lorna (yes, I named her Lorna) is smoother on the freeway than
I'd expected (especially considering that it is running on
MT-21's). She purrs along at 70 mph at 5,000 rpm--which is nice
because I intend to commute on this bike and 6,000 rpm's is the
rpm limit proscribed during break-in. I blipped the throttle a
few times and found that Lorna had gobs of torque, even while
running at 70 mph. Some might prefer a taller top gear, but I
like the roll-on power of the 690 in traffic.
So far so good. I can't wait to ride home from work! :)

It only gets better after break in Rusty! the vibration smooths
out, the bike begs you to accelerate when dealing w/slow
traffic. ;)
Interesting that your having a hard time shifting, I found my
2013 to have a nice smooth & crisp feel to it, love the
hydraulic clutch too! the only trouble I've had is finding
neutral from time to time. ;D The bike is VERY quiet especially
at idle in stock trim. Are EWE gonna change the pipe Rusty? If
so do it early so they break in together and expedite the true
power of the dark side (insert evil laugh) ::)

I'm super jealous!
I called this Thursday and they had just unloaded it off the
truck! It'll take me a week or two to get it picked up (312
miles away). Doesn't matter though we've got snow and ice
around here.

Congratulations Reaps! I'm liking the bike more and more. Much
smoother than I had been led to believe. I'm going off-road
tomorrow for the first time. I'm still on the break-in, so I
won't get too crazy.

Awesome Rusty; congratulations!
I wondered about the ABS light too, mine is the same. So far I
like the ABS, I had to do an emergency stop in traffic and
didn't slip a tire. I know my old bike would have been
wheel-hopping and/or sliding in the same situation (of course
the light weight helps too). I put my rear passenger sets and
the rear grab handles on today. I had to remove the rear fender
to install the grab handles. When you remove the rear fender
you have to remove the gas cap. I made sure to keep this
covered as I already watched a YouTube video of this poor soul
who dropped a bolt down there. I had to move the bike around
today and the grab handles came in real handy - no regrets with
not getting a bigger bike! Okay, you can now officially move
this to 'rambling'... :-X

Got my 2014 on Friday but only have a couple miles so hardly
enough time to evaluate. But, first impression is excellent.
For those who are concerned about the ride-by-wire throttle,
they need not be; I find it extremely smooth with no "jerky" or
irregular feel at all; pleasantly surprised with this feature!
I love the power & tall gearing for road trips & like the
stability; no "twitchy" feeling at all & the bike turns in
rather well. My buddy says it tends to stand up in the corners
with power delivery but, again, I don't have enough time on the
bike to tell myself.
So, first thought is all those 690 buyers are right; this is an
amazing bike!

Spot on Bob! I forgot to mention how smooth the throttle is.
Smoother than my WR250R by a wide margin. But then you roll on
the throttle and the power's right there. I'm ordering a Wings
exhaust, but only to improve the sound...I'm not even gonna mess
with the air box; the bike has plenty of grunt.

Rusty, where are you getting your Wings from? I need to
continue research but the nuclear reactor pipe has gotta go at
some point. If for no other reason than "safety"; it's so big
I'm afraid somebody's gonna get hurt just being close to it!
I really like how the initial throttle is almost docile but,
twist the throttle, & all hell breaks loose! Sweeet!
