       Rottweiler Intake

So, I've looked at the Rottweiler intake for the 690. It looks
good. But, . . . . I wonder about intake noise?? Has anyone had
an experience with this intake system yet.

       Kingrider,
I had that concern as I recall reading the various posts about
the EVO kit that apparently makes a ton of intake noise.
However, I now have three rides and a handful of quick test
rides around the block for a total of just over 250 miles with
the Rottweiler and I stand by my original observation.
The RW intake is quiet, possibly quieter, than the stock box
until you get near wide open throttle. If you have it pinned and
are ripping through the gears, you'll notice the intake but even
at full tilt, it doesn't overpower the sound of the exhaust.
I was just thinking about the sound of the intake yesterday as I
commuted on the bike and was able to take a 2-lane road through
the local mountains to get there. If you're under 5k rpms, on
basically flat ground, and just giving it enough juice to
maintain your current speed, you can't even hear the intake.
This became apparent as I inadvertently surprised a couple of
bicyclists that didn't hear me coming up behind and I startled
them as I came by. After the second biker had a bit of a head
shake moment when I went by, I decided to do a quick rev before
       I passed anymore peddlers.
I've only had to swap filter skins so far in between rides
versus a full filter cleaning which makes pre/post ride
maintenance with the filter about as easy as possible. Not to
the point you asked but man I disliked having anything to do
with the stock airbox and couldn't be more pleased with the RW
       solution.

River, have you done a fuel mileage check. I wouldn't think
there would be much difference, if any. The only thing I'd be
really worried about is dumping the bike in the water while on a
       trail or adventure ride.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. Life is sometimes - - uh -
       hectic!!
The feedback on the RW intake is good to hear. I agree with the
idea of easier maintenance is maintenance done more often.
Now if I can convince the fiscal department in my house that a
new intake system is a "need" and not just a "want"! ::)

I put the Rottweiler on my wife's bike and mine. I've now got
an 1100 mile trip on dirt after the install. The ticket on
extended "dusty" roads/trails is using 2 filter skins on top of
the original filter. I used 4 sets of filter skin changes over
1100 miles and while the skins were mud coated, the main filter
foam element had almost no particulate wash out with first a
mineral spirits wash and then soap and hot water - the filter
skins caught virtually all of the dirt! There is ZERO dirt that
got through the main foam filter from the looks of the thing.
This is exactly what I wanted to see - change the skins and not
worry about the main foam filter needing cleaning on a trip.
This alone makes it worth the cost of admission. I also think
it hits harder at lower RPM.
Boy I don't find anything objectionable about the intake bark -
at WOT it sounds the way a 700 cc thumper should sound!

Thanks for the update River, I figured I should add to the info
       as well.
I've had the RW on for about 500mi now and couldn't be happier
with the unit. A buddy and I rode the Big Bear Trail Run a
couple of weeks ago and I too loaded up with 2 skins and just
removed one at the gas stop mid day. We did 140mi with 95% being
dirt and the the bike performed flawlessly.
Also noticed that at lower RPM's I think the RW is quieter. We
were slogging up some rutted and rocky jeep trail when I made a
mental note of how quiet the bike was chugging along in the
tractor pulling zone of the rev range. Bottom half of the tach
in 2, 3, or 4th depending on the terrain and the bike just goes
about it's business without much fuss.
However, when the road opens up, the intake sound still doesn't
overpower the exhaust... there's just this big, beautiful noise
letting you know you'd better be pointed in the right direction
'coz your field of view is about to get blurry around the edges.
       :D
