Adjust steering stops?
By: Streeter Date: October 16, 2015, 11:45 am

My 690 seems to have very limited steering lock, especially
compared to other dual sport bikes I've owned. It looks like
the stops are adjustable, is there any reason not to do this?
Why is it so limited from the factory? What is the limit?
Thanks,

I agree. Tighten in all the way. Do not take out the nuts. I've
read where some have taken out the nuts and tighten them
further. But I took mine out and checked. You're just gonna bust
your shocks against the frame, so I put them back on.

Thanks, guys. I'll tighten them the rest of the way.

The reasons for the stops being adjusted out so far is to
prevent your forks from contacting the frame and radiator, and
to align with the steering lock. There is slim chance someone
could bust the steering lock because there is now play in both
directions and make off with your bike. That being said, just
make sure the forks don't come into contact with anything.

With my bolts adjusted all the way in there is minimal space
between the forks and frame. They don't touch but it's really
close. With the lock nut removed they definitely touch.

The only time I nearly dropped my bike was on the first day due
to the stock position of the steering stops.
It was when I leant over to do a slow 1st gear u turn and she
didn't turn, she nearly fell over.
So the 1st mod I made on day one was adjusting the steering
stops in as far as practical before the forks touched the rads.
Crazy how KTM sold the bikes like that!

The triple clamp on R models has two positions: 24mm and 22mm
offset, the default is 24mm.
If you take out the middle stem of the triple clamp and rotate
it by 180 degrees to 22mm offset the fork gets more vertical and
gains a good amount of turning degree and real life agility in
tight stuff.
Maybe that way loose some stability in high speed road use, I
could`t tell any difference, but for off-road use is a must.
