       squealing noise

I have 250 ish miles on my 2014.. first day riding i noticed a
strange squealing noise coming out the exhaust. its more
noticeable when started up and shutting off. I read that the
690's have issues wearing out the rocker arm bearings. anyone
here have similar issues? between this and the cam chain
tensioner issue it seems that they need a high volume/pressure
oil pump. Does anyone know if anyone makes one?

let my dealer know today about it. he said not to worry about
it. I have built many two strokes as well as 4 strokes, i know
what a bearing sounds like when seizing . I will let them look
at it, then i will check the valve shims and take a look
       myself.

What year is your bike? Does the squealing happen before and
after the engine is started/shut-off when you turn on/off the
ignition key? I'm not sure of the non-abs bikes, but the 690's
with abs squeal when you turn on/off the ignition. I thought it
was the fuel pump on my 2014, but I think it has something to do
with the abs equipment. If the squealing is while the engine is
running, you may have a problem. I hope this helps.

mine is a 2014. i hear the noise when started and at idle ,
especia;y when shut off. i will try to post a video tomorrow.
The noise you hear after the fuel pump primes up is the fuel
bypass. it is a whistling noise that stops when you start the
motor. I am curious if anyone else has this. I ordered a manual
cam chain tensioner, should be here next week. Just want to rule
       that out.

well i traced the noise to the rings. hopefuly i dont have a
broke ring. I will run my borescope down the plug hole and take
a look . might be the excuse i need to do a big bore.

Well after reading about excessive oil consumption , from the
rings not seating. i came to the conclusion that if the cam
chain tensioner was not working right, that the engine would
rock back and forth. bad for the rings, power and valvetrain. so
i switched to rotella t3 to help the rings seat and installed a
manual cam chain tensioner . no more squeal and i have regained
the power i lost . When i pulled the chain tensioner out it was
soft and would squease right in. once the tensioner fills with
oil it should stay pumped up. at least all the other motors i
have worked on have. So if you have a new bike make sure your
dealer put mineral based oil in it when you pick it up and it
wouldn't hurt to change it at 500 miles as reccommended, but
refill with mineral for another 250-500. just to make sure the
rings are good. And even if you dont think you have a issue with
the chain tensioner i would change it ,or at least check it
often. KTM's quality control sucks on this one. other
bikes/quads last the life of the bike in most cases. Almost all
ktm's have this issue some more severe than others.

Brian, your the first I've read about having a problem with the
cam chain tensioner on a 2014/15. I was wondering if I should
go with Rally Raids tensioner. They seem to be the only one
making a mechanical one for the 690.
I haven't checked the manual, are you say the bike requires
mineral oil in the tensioner. I thought it was fed oil from the
engine? Or are you talking about a petroleum based engine oil
       instead of a synthetic?

bought my tensioner from ebay not rally raid. Sorry i put
regular (mineral based oil) back in the motor to help the rings
seat. not in the tensioner. with my tensioner not working right
, the slop in the chain was allowing my valves and piston to
kick back when the engine stoped on the up side of the cam ramp.
the back and forth motion is not good for the rings. and since i
read about other people having issues with there bikes using
oil. ktm tells the dealers to put regular oil back in them to
help the rings seat to stop the oil burning. so im running it
for a couple hundred miles or so just to be safe. then i will
       switch back to motorex.

Brian, thanks for the heads up on the e-bay tensioner. The only
one I see is the one from a vender in the Netherlands. Is this
       the one?
