Clutch Master Cylinder
By: truck11 Date: March 16, 2015, 1:34 pm

So in my hast on Sunday, I stripped the threads in the clutch
master cylinder mounting hole. Bonehead move.
Any thoughts on either tapping it to an M7 thread, or just drill
through and using a longer bolt and locking nut?

That sucks. Do what I'd do:

Do you have enough metal to tap a new bigger thread? Or to use a
helicoil?
Failing that you might have some luck using liquid steel ( I
think it's JB Weld in U.S. ) and re cutting the original thread.

There is enough meat to re-tap to an M7. But let me tell you
how much of a pain in the butt finding an M7 hex head bolt was.
Fastenal didn't have anything, hardware stores had nothing - I
came across McMaster & Carr (
HTML http://www.mcmaster.com/)...
$3
bolt plus another $8 or $9 for shipping!!! ugh. (I got 3
bolts!)
M8 was too big and the M7 is not a widely used size apparently,
so not readily available.
Due to the design of the master cylinder (shape and contours),
you can't simply drill all the way through and just use a nut
and bolt. I managed to retap for the M7 bolt from
McMaster-Carr. It's not stainless though :-( so far so good
after running 2 days of hard trails in WV 2 weeks ago.

That's good. Price sucks tho. Maybe some marine grade anti seize
would stop it corroding into place? Just thinking out loud on
this...
Glad you got it sorted out.
