Rear Rack Weight Capacity for Fuel?

I'm getting a Nomadic Rack off of KTMtwins and will use a Giant
Loop Coyote bag for storage.
How much weight can / have people run on the tail rack - for
extended rough country duty? I won't have a rack supporting
saddle bags and the rear rack up from the frame.
I'd like to use the back rack for a Kolpin / Rotopax 1.5 gallon
can stacked horizontally with a light sleeping bag on top of it.
Ideas.

Thats a problem area for the 690 & you should research carefully
before you mount a bunch of gear back there. Any weight you put
on a rack behind the seat is 100% supported by the plastic gas
tank. I think they say 15 pounds is max but even thats a lot of
stress on the tank when off roading.. I've heard plenty off
cases where the bolt threads have been ripped out of the tank
where the rack bolts on. Even broken tanks from too much weight
& those are $$$$!!!. A Rotopax hangin off over your brake light
wont last long on a rough trail. Move it as far forward as you
can. When I travel I carry a duffle strapped on my rack but
balance some of the weight on the seat also. Hope this helps,

You should be fine with the 1.5 gal of gas and the light
sleeping bag. A gallon of gas weighs just over 6 lbs, not
including the container. But I do second what Rockeboy says. I
have the Nomadic rack and its quite bomber. The weak link would
be the threaded inserts in the tank. I haven't read where
people have been ripping out the threads or the inserts, but I
have read complaints about other rack designs breaking due to
the rack not being stiff enough and flexing 'till breakage.
That being said, I haven't had much more than 15 lbs on my rack
and traveled off road with it loaded, just paved roads. You
should contact Nomadic Racks to see if they know of any issues
with their rack and the 690 Enduro.

racks may also add support against flexing because they tie into
the foot peg brackets.

The racks have all been solid. If fact, the Touratech rack has
been forced into roll cage duty and has done well.
I'll get some photos of the broken brackets up soon.

Thanks for all the input on the rear rack capacity.
I have ordered Perun's kits for our bikes and I bought safari
tanks - I liked the idea of packing fuel with the safari versus
kilpin bottles.

I bought a kit from Perun. Good quality. Kinda a bastard to
install by yourself. Two sets of hands recommended.... that or
don't drink while you install it, like I did.

I second replacing your upper and lower tank mount bolts. Easy
to do and the aftermarket has much stronger solutions.

I wanted to chime in to be clear that, when paired with
Touratech side racks, most of the weight on the rear rack is
supported by the passenger foot peg brackets, so the tank
threads don't handle much of the the load. That said, I've
never read any complaints that the *plastic* (usually said with
a sneer) actually failed; only the subframe bolts, which can be
replaced with beefier versions mentioned in this thread.
I don't think the tank *ever* fails. I think it's actually made
of adamantium.
I've never heard of the metal threads failing, which mean it
will probably soon just so the universe can show me how little I
know (again).
Also, my apologies to Rotopax, it wasn't their mount that broke.
It was the Wolfman Pawnee Plate's brackets that snapped.
Wolfman said it's sending me beefier brackets soon.

So I've been rocking the perun kit/ nomadic rack for over a year
now. I roll with 30 lbs on it easily. If it's gonna break, so be
it. Then I'll go to a frontside gas tank again. Yeah, having
that damn fuel tank where it is seems to be a huge ergonomic
downside, but it's part of what makes a 690. We just keep adding
all sorts of shit to it and expect it to do it's damn job. Well,
there's a breaking point for everything. Just get the upgraded
bolt kit. :P
